Interview: French winds and familiar faces who sustain SSF's chamber music spirit

20-year-old Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music through eyes of four French wind players
For a chamber music festival to continue for 20 years, many things must come together. Chief among them are a devoted artistic director, innovative programming, a stable operation and a growing interest in chamber music — a genre defined by its intimate scale, where a small group of musicians perform without a conductor.
Equally vital are the musicians themselves — both the loyal artists who return year after year and new participants who bring fresh energy — who collectively sustain the festival's spirit and artistic quality.
For this year's Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music, which began April 22 and goes to May 4, 69 artists have gathered for 14 performances.
Among them are four French wind players: oboist Olivier Doise, clarinetist Romain Guyot, flutist Matthieu Gauci-Ancelin and horn player Herve Joulain.
Doise, Guyot and Joulain are SSF regulars who clear their schedules every year for the two-week event.
'It was not easy to bring audiences to a chamber music festival. Korean audiences tend to prefer big orchestras and grand productions. Director Kang Dong-suk still fights to attract the audience, discovering new pieces not only for the piano but for wind instrument as well," Guyot said during an interview last week.
'We know we will play new pieces together — it has become a priority in our schedule,' he added.
The clarinetist, who is the principal clarinetist of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva and an acclaimed soloist and educator, has returned to the festival 12 times since the inauguration in 2006, making him the SFF's most frequently returning overseas musician.
Doise, principal oboist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and a professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, also spoke about the unique energy he feels from Korean audiences. He has participated in the festival since 2015, missing only 2021 and 2022, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted international travel.
'Chamber music festivals usually aren't this long,' Doise said. 'Here, for two weeks, we can work, practice and rehearse — it feels like our home. Everything is so well organized that we only have to think about the music we play.'
For the past 15 years, the musicians have returned to the same hotel in central Seoul, where they stay, practice and rehearse — a small but telling detail that reflects the festival's stable and well-established operation.
For Joulain, returning to Korea each spring has become an annual tradition since 2014. One of France's leading horn players, having held principal positions with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Orchestre National de France, Joulain said "Korea feels like home now."
Flutist Gauci-Ancelin joined the festival for the first time this year, stepping in as a last-minute substitution just two weeks ago. Over six days, he faces a demanding schedule, performing eight different pieces.
A professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in Austria and a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, Gauci-Ancelin said, "Although it's my first time here, I know many of the musicians," adding, "I really appreciate the familylike atmosphere."
France, one of the world's woodwind powerhouses, has a long tradition of nurturing wind musicians. In many parts of Europe, including northern France, coal miners once formed amateur brass and wind bands as a core part of their community life, Guyot explained, noting that these musical traditions helped embed a deep appreciation for wind instruments in the culture.
'So originally, wind instruments were popular instruments — they were played for dancing, for parties, for funerals and even for military ceremonies," he said, explaining that today, woodwind instruments remain a popular choice in France, compared to the stronger preference for piano and string instruments often seen in Korea.
Throughout the festival, the four musicians are performing in different ensembles alongside other instrumentalists, culminating in a joint appearance for the quintet of Bizet's 'Carmen' in the closing performance Sunday.
Launched in 2006 by violinist Kang Dong-suk with support from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the SSF emerged in a musical landscape that lacked long-term, stable platforms for chamber music.

Korean artist Im Young-joo wins 2025 Frieze Seoul Artist Award Coinciding with the fourth edition of Frieze Seoul in September, the international art fair will launch Frieze House Seoul, inviting leading galleries to hold exhibitions and events there during the four-day event. The exhibition space will be located in Yaksu-dong, a neighborhood in Jung-gu, central Seoul, at a building renovated by Seoul-based architectural studio Samuso Hyoja. Frieze House Seoul follows the success of No. 9 Cork Street in London, according to Frieze on Wednesday. 'Frieze House Seoul marks a natural and exciting evolution of our presence in Korea. Seoul has become a focal point for the global art world, and this new space will allow us to foster deeper engagement with the city's vibrant art communities throughout the year,' said Kristell Chade, executive director of fairs at Frieze. The space will consist of two main exhibition spaces across four floors, offering over 210 square meters of display space, and a landscaped garden. Galleries can apply for the inaugural season of Frieze House Seoul on the Frieze website. Frieze Seoul 2025 will be held from Sept. 3 to 6, bringing together some 120 galleries from 30 countries at COEX in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul. Meanwhile, Frieze announced Korean artist Im Young-joo as the recipient of the Frieze Seoul Artist Award of the year. This year, works for the Frieze Artist Award in both Seoul and London respond to the theme of "Future Commons," with new multimedia works that explore ideas of community and shared experience. 'Her work, 'Calming Signal,' offers a profound exploration of collective behavior and societal rhythms, resonating deeply with our 2025 theme, 'Future Commons.' Im's innovative approach and compelling narrative exemplify the dynamic talent emerging from Korea's contemporary art scene,' said Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul. Im's winning commission, "Calming Signal," is a research-based, three-channel video installation set within a grid-like structure, which juxtaposes Earth's tilted axis with rotational cultural dances, linking gestures of imbalance to visual manifestations of an uncertain future.

SBS sets sights on Asia's version of Eurovision

Titled 'Veiled Musician,' the pan-Asian vocal contest to highlight regional talent and cross-cultural artistry Asia is getting its own take on the Eurovision Song Contest. Apparently, 'Veiled Musician,' an upcoming global audition show from leading South Korean broadcaster Seoul Broadcasting System, was made with the world's longest-running television music competition in mind. Featuring participants from 13 countries — Korea, Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Laos — the show, slated to premiere later this year, will kick off with local competitions in each participating nation. The top three finalists from each territory will then advance to the grand finale, which will be staged in Korea. The show will be broadcast across major local networks in the participating countries and on SBS. Adding a layer of meritocracy, 'Veiled Musician' will strip away personal identifiers, such as contestants' faces and nationalities, focusing solely on vocal talent. The show stands out not only for its scale but also for its production setup. Unlike previous cross-border projects where broadcasting formats were simply licensed, 'Veiled Musician' is a co-produced venture spearheaded by the participating nations, alongside South Korea. 'In fact, there aren't really any broadcasters in other countries that actually do co-productions," claimed Kim Yong-jae, chief revenue officer at SBS' Prism Studios, the entertainment production division of the broadcaster, during an interview with The Korea Herald. "They've only ever bought the format. ... Co-producing like this is probably something that has never happened before,' Kim said. Kim, a veteran of the Korean entertainment industry, whose career includes stints as a producer and deputy head of SBS' entertainment division and who is widely credited with exporting the popular Korean variety show "Running Man" to China, where it became a megahit, is helming the production of "Veiled Musician." According to Kim, 'Veiled Musician' will serve as a powerful platform for cultural diplomacy and create music industry connections across Asia. 'If we do well together with this kind of content, it's an amazing opportunity to really elevate our national image. Also, the show's judges and contestants may even collaborate on producing an album. Our music market could expand as a result as well. For example, a song like 'The Way Back' (translated) could be produced in 12 different versions and exported, creating a powerful ripple effect,' said Kim. Kim emphasized that for him, a win-win structure was key from the outset. For Season 1, he said SBS is waiving format fees and offering financial aid to select nations. 'For the first season, we're essentially offering support. In fact, we're planning to provide 100 million won ($73,000) each to countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, since they (the broadcasting companies) are struggling financially.' Going forward, as SBS' head of globalizing K-content, Kim said he has identified Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand as key growth markets. 'Among them, Indonesia is the best — it all comes down to population size. For example, the Korean film 'Miracle in Cell No. 7' made 20 billion won in Indonesia." Kim is also strategically focusing on Myanmar, where Korean content previously held strong cultural sway. 'Before the coup, Hallyu was really strong in Myanmar. Why? Because they aired Korean dramas from Monday to Thursday right before the 9 o'clock news. As a result, a lot of young people there can speak Korean. And the country is quite large geographically, too." He added: 'Anyway, we need to move quickly and localize ourselves in these Asian countries — be on the ground with them. We need to support them, not just for 'Veiled Musician,' but also by helping develop their music industries while promoting ours. That's how they come to think positively of Korean content and Korea as a whole."

Hundreds of fans gather in a town nearly 80 kilometers from Seoul to mark the occasion YEONCHEON, Gyeonggi Province — Just a day after RM and V were discharged from the military, fellow BTS members Jimin and Jungkook stood before a crowd of some 500 fans Wednesday morning at Yeoncheon Public Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, marking the end of their 18-month mandatory military service. Wearing their uniforms, the two arrived in a black vehicle and stepped out to a roaring welcome from local and international fans. They saluted and shouted 'Unity!' before offering brief words of thanks, both appearing bashful as they reconnected with their supporters after a long absence. 'It's been quite a long time, from COVID-19 to military service,' Jimin said. 'Thank you so much for waiting. I think we can pick up where we left off and keep painting the picture we've been working on. We'll prepare even better things to show you.' Reflecting on his service, he added, 'It was my first time in the military, and honestly, it wasn't that easy. If you ever see soldiers passing by, I'd be very grateful if you could offer them kind words.' Jungkook, smiling shyly, said, 'It's been a while since I've stood in front of cameras. I didn't even put on makeup today, so I feel a bit awkward and don't really know what to say.' He added, 'To my fellow soldiers and seniors who finished their service earlier — thank you for enduring everything together with us.' Due to the large turnout, the two completed their remarks in just under 20 minutes before boarding their vehicle and leaving the site. Enlisting together, discharging side by side Jimin and Jungkook enlisted together in December 2023 as active-duty soldiers in the Army's 5th Infantry Division. Jimin served as an artilleryman and Jungkook as a cook. Both completed their service in the same unit, with their discharge ceremony held at 8:00 a.m., an hour earlier than RM and V's 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Despite the early hour, fans from around the world filled the area near the event site, waving banners and fan sticks in support of the two stars. Some even climbed to the low rooftop of the stadium next to the open ground where the two K-pop stars appeared, trying to get a better view of the pair. Although the discharge location and time were officially released only to media outlets, news had already spread after RM and V's ceremony the day before, leading fans to travel nearly 80 kilometers from Seoul to Yeoncheon in hopes of catching a glimpse of Jimin and Jungkook. From the moment fans entered Yeoncheon from Seoul, celebratory banners stretched along the road, spaced every 50 meters. Each carried personal and passionate messages such as, 'Jimin, we love you. Congratulations on your discharge,' 'We've waited for this day when Jimin comes to catch us,' and 'Golden treasure Jungkook, time to soar again.' A Brazilian fan, who requested anonymity, shared, 'This is my first time in Korea and I had never even heard of this town before, but I just had to come to see Jimin.' Another fan from Indonesia said, 'I'm so happy Jimin has returned safe and healthy. Now that he's back with us, I feel so happy again.' Full-group appearance expected soon Ahead of their much-anticipated musical return as a group, fans are likely to see all the BTS members except for Suga together soon. The group will hold their annual debut anniversary event, '2025 BTS Festa,' at Kintex in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on June 13 and 14. On those same days, J-Hope's solo encore concert is scheduled at nearby Goyang Sports Complex, raising expectations that the other members may appear as guests. Meanwhile, Suga, who is currently serving as a social service worker, is set to be discharged on June 21.
