Google's new AI model is a fun playground, but it threatens to make game developers obsolete
You're probably aware of generating images with text prompts, and you've likely seen video generation AI models gaining popularity too. Genie 3, however, generates an entire environment where you can move around, as if you were playing a video game. Compared to its predecessors, Genie 3 can create hyperrealistic environments which would take seasoned game developers weeks to complete. The possibilities are endless: from a robot exploring a futuristic city, to playing as a cowboy riding a horse across the Wild West. One of the standout examples included sailing through the city of Venice, though wing suiting across a mountain range is also up there.

Flying a helicopter over some hills Google's Genie 3 is limited, for now. You can also tell from the art style that the environments were made by AI: they've got that 'almost too perfect' look to them. But generating an entire environment with just a few words? This might just be the next replacement for game development engines like Unity and Unreal.

Customer support representatives were some of the first to go, and McDonald's is even experimenting with AI models receiving orders at drive-throughs. Even Duolingo — a language learning app — let go of human employees in lieu of AI.Seeing how cutthroat the AAA game development industry is, I can't help but feel like game developers are now an even more endangered species. We might see more and more indie studios start popping up, with many rushing to support them because they want to play games made by humans.That future is still a ways away, but Google — with Genie 3 — has shown that it will likely become a reality one day. Fortunately, for now at least, this is just a fun thing for people to mess around with that makes you ponder the future potential of this technology: like training robots in virtual environments.

The Android 17 dessert name leaks. Can you guess what it is?
Started as an inside joke at Google, many of you younger Android users might not remember the dessert name given to new Android releases starting with Android 1.5, which was the third build of Android after Android 1.0 and Android 1.1. The dessert names were names of a desert, and since Android 1.5 was the third build of Android, the dessert name started with a "C" since that is the third letter of the alphabet. Every major new Android build was given a dessert name that started with the letter of the alphabet that was next after the previous major Android build. For example, the fourth build of Android, Android 1.6, had the dessert name Donut. The first Android phone owned by many of you older PhoneArena users was the fantastic Motorola DROID. It was the first phone running Android 2.0, which was the fifth major build of Android and had the dessert name of Eclair. The latter started with the letter "E," the next letter in the alphabet after the "D" used for Android 1.6, the previous major Android release. Eclair was the first Android operating system to feature free Google Maps turn-by-turn directions. Google eventually partnered with Nestle, and in 2013, the dessert name for Android 4.4 was KitKat after the well-known chocolate bar. This took Android to promo heaven as 50 million KitKat bars nestled inside a wrapper containing Android branding were released in 19 countries. These wrappers offered prizes such as a free Nexus 7 tablet. Google repeated this with Android 8 and Android 8.1 in 2017. Google ended the practice of giving each major new Android release a dessert name after Android 9 was given the Pie desert name in 2018. Since Android 10, Google has kept the tradition alive, but only internally. The practice of using the next letter in the alphabet as the first letter for the selected dessert ended just this year. The internal dessert name for Android 15 in 2024 was Vanilla Ice Cream. By tradition, this year's internal dessert name should have started with a "W." Instead, because Google switched to a trunk-based model to develop new Android builds, Google moved ahead to "B" and selected Baklava as the dessert name for Android 16. Android expert Mishaal Rahman says that with Google returning to the practice of going down the alphabet each year for the first letter of the dessert name, Android 17 will use a dessert name starting with the letter "C." That will be "Cinnamon Bun," according to Rahman, who explains why he is so confident that this is indeed the correct dessert name for Android 17. "A trusted source within Google shared evidence with us that clearly shows the company using "CinnamonBun" as the internal codename for API level 37.0," he said. The Core API level is the name used by developers to distinguish different Android releases as opposed to the marketing names of the operating system, which uses numbers such as Android 15 and Android 16 . Rahman says that you might see Android 17 referred to as "Android CinnamonBun" in beta versions of Android 17. Once the OS hits platform stability and all changes to how the system interacts with apps have been locked in, you can expect Google to refer to the operating system as Android 17. Visible Wireless tests "Inner Circle" as a near-family plan alternative
Visible, Verizon's budget-focused prepaid brand, is trying out something new that could bring it closer to offering a family plan. The feature, called "Visible Inner Circle," appeared in a Reddit announcement offering early access. The sign-up window has already closed, suggesting only a limited number of people were able to join this test. The company shared limited details, including that Inner Circle would allow multiple (existing) accounts to be linked together. Additionally, these would have a shared discount of $5 a would be a big change for Visible, which has always kept things simple with single-line, no-contract service offering unlimited talk, text, and data. This is what the company shared are the benefits of this plan: Group or family plans are a proven way for carriers to keep customers for longer and encourage people to add more lines. The challenge will be keeping the service simple while adding more features. Visible's popularity has always been tied to its clear pricing, no hidden fees, and unlimited data without complicated plan tiers. Adding multi-line support also means more work on the backend. Managing shared billing, permissions, and multiple accounts requires more infrastructure, which can be tricky for a prepaid service. This test run will likely help Visible figure out if it can scale the idea without adding complexity that customers don't want. For people who want budget pricing and reliable coverage, Inner Circle could be worth watching. It may help Visible compete more directly with other prepaid brands that already reward customers for adding lines. But if the benefits are small or the savings don't match competitors, it could struggle to stand out. For now, only early testers know exactly how it works. If Visible decides to expand the program, it could be one of the brand's biggest plan changes in years.
