Sam Ponder breaks silence on ESPN firing, claims transgender views and social media activity led to silent blacklisting

More than a year after her unexpected exit from ESPN, former NFL Countdown host Sam Ponder is finally sharing the behind-the-scenes truth—and it's nothing like the 'budget cuts' explanation viewers were fed in 2023.
In a candid appearance on The Sage Steele Show, Ponder claimed that her support for female athletes and her cautious views on transgender participation in women's sports led to internal pushback, quiet censorship, and ultimately, her departure.
A retweet that triggered a warning and set the tone for her ESPN exit
The tipping point came in July 2023, when Ponder retweeted a video of Paula Scanlan—a former teammate of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas—sharing her experience at UPenn.
Ponder's comment was mild: she simply encouraged followers to 'listen.' But that act alone sparked a warning from a higher-up at ESPN. She recalled receiving a private email urging her not to 'misgender people,' which she interpreted as a veiled threat.
'I knew I was on the clock,' Ponder admitted.
The network reportedly flagged more of her online activity, including a 'liked' tweet from Megyn Kelly joking that 'men don't need gynecologists.'

Ponder didn't think it was controversial. 'It was just a favorite,' she said. 'I didn't think that was a big deal.'
ESPN listed it as budget cuts, but Sam Ponder says her schedule wasn't the problem
While ESPN cited cost-cutting as the official reason behind her departure—lumping her in with figures like Robert Griffin III—Ponder believes her limited role on Sunday NFL Countdown wasn't actually draining company resources. Instead, she feels her open support for female athletes like Riley Gaines made her an internal liability.
She even mentioned avoiding coverage of Gaines during Women's History Month out of fear of backlash. 'I knew I was supposed to talk about Riley,' Ponder confessed. 'But I didn't.'

Despite the fallout, Ponder doesn't feel bitter. She called her firing 'one of the best things that's ever happened' to her, saying, 'I was on the hamster wheel. I wasn't going to jump off on my own.' Her final message was clear: 'I wasn't trying to be controversial. I just wanted people to hear stories I wasn't seeing on SportsCenter.'

IND vs ENG 4th Test: 'Could have been 3-0 up' - Ravi Shastri's warning for India in crucial Manchester Test

Captain Shubman Gill and teammates line up for the anthems ahead of Day 1 of the 4th Test Match in Manchester, England (Photo by) As India face off against England in the crucial 4th Test at Manchester, the stakes are higher than ever. A win for the hosts would mean that a series victory would be out of reach for India, but a win for India would mean that the series will be decided in the final Test at The Oval. Ahead of the day's play, former India head coach and legend Ravi Shastri made sharp observations about how the visitors can avoid a repeat of the heartbreak they faced at Lord's and level the series. Backing the Shubman Gill-led side to level the series and bounce back from defeat, the 63-year-old said, "India could have been 3-0 up for all you know, but they'll have to work hard in this session." He also warned the Indian side, who were sent out to bat by England skipper Ben Stokes , who won the toss and opted to bowl, to keep focus on the first 30 overs and not lose too many wickets. "This is the first time you're getting close to English conditions. It's overcast, there's a bit of grass on the surface. There's pace around in the form of Jofra Archer. So their main aim would be those first 30 overs. Don't lose more than three wickets, then take it from there," warned Shastri. Big questions for India before 4th Test: No.3 dilemma, Kamboj debut, pitch worries The veteran also warned that the hosts are probably the more threatening side in this match, "England are a more dangerous side when they can play both ways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! IND vs ENG: Ben Stokes wins four in a row, but challenges a unique record at Old Trafford

Ben Stokes and Shubman Gill (BCCI | X) England captain Ben Stokes won the toss Wednesday and elected to field on an overcast morning at Old Trafford in Manchester. History is against Stokes, however, as no team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won an Old Trafford Test(3 lost, 8 draws). Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Meanwhile, India have yet to win a Test at Old Trafford following four defeats and five draws in nine previous matches at the Manchester ground. England had already named their side, making just one change as they recalled Liam Dawson for the left-arm spinner's first Test in eight years after Shoaib Bashir suffered a series-ending finger injury at Lord's. India made three changes, with batsman Sai Sudharsan replacing Karun Nair, and Shardul Thakur and debutant Anshul Kamboj coming in for injured pacemen Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep. England had already announced its team with spinner Liam Dawson back in test cricket after eight years. He replaces injured spinner Shoaib Bashir in England's only change from the heated third test at Lord's. India captain Shubman Gill said Tuesday that England had acted against the 'spirit of the game' by delaying play at Lord's. Gill was not happy about England batsmen Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett being late to the crease on the third day of the test, which the host won by 22 runs to take a 2-1 series lead. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo England can secure a series victory with a win.
