Italian fashion brand Prada, under fire for showcasing Kolhapuri-style slippers without acknowledging their Indian roots, sent a team to Kolhapur to learn more about the traditional craft on Wednesday.
The visit comes days after Prada's Spring/Summer 2026 show at Milan Fashion Week, where models wore leather slippers, resembling Kolhapuri chappals. Priced at around Rs 1.2 lakh, the footwear sparked backlash in India as it wasn't credited or linked to its cultural origin.
To address the concerns, six senior members of Prada's footwear division visited Kolhapur. The team included Paolo Tiveron, head of men's footwear production, Daniele Contu, a pattern-making manager, and others.
They met with local artisans in Jawahar Nagar, a hub for Kolhapuri chappal-making, and interacted with craftsmen like Shubham Satpute, Balu Gawli, and Sunil Lokre.
'A team has come from Italy to check all the manufacturing units of Kohapuri chappals and to see the technical parts as Prada enters the retail market in Kolhapur, " said a vendor.
In response, Prada said it was committed to responsible design and open to collaborating with Indian artisans.
The company also expressed interest in a limited-edition 'Made in India" collection inspired by Kolhapuri designs, aiming for a more respectful and collaborative approach going forward.

Pablo Picasso to MF Husain: Gifting the recipe of art

Think art and the vision that instantly conjures up in one's mind would be of a canvas in a gilded frame, pronouncing its snobbery and pride from under the glare of the soft lights of a sanitised gallery. This may be true in most cases, for art does have its own settings. But there have been surprises that have broken this stereotype, time and again. Imagine walking into a bustling eatery in the bylanes of a small Indian town and encountering the artworks of the country's most famous artist. When MF Husain visited Kochi as a brand ambassador for Kerala Tourism, he often chose to eat his meals at Kayees, a popular biryani joint in Mattancherry. On the day of his first visit, he drew the leg of a goat on a piece of paper while sitting on the bench, to indicate to the puzzled waiter that he wanted a leg piece in his curry. He went on to complete the sketch of a goat and handed it over to the restaurant. He also presented a drawing of a camel as a parting gift, and today, the humble hotel proudly displays these invaluable gestures on its crowded walls. Another unusual place that features a painting by the iconic artist is the Lucky Tea Stall in Ahmedabad, renowned for its unusual location. The owner who purchased the land did so without realising that it was a cemetery. The knowledge did not prove to be a deterrent, and he went ahead with his plans, placing tables for customers amid the graves and coffins. The morbid surroundings soon became its unique feature, as well as its chai and maska bun. Husain was enamoured by the ambience and in 1994, gifted his painting to the owner, which still adorns its walls, adding its own charm to the 'dine with the dead' environment.

PC Sorcar's brand returns to Chennai after a decade

The lights dim after three bells, and the beats of a nostalgic theme song fill the auditorium. Children lean forward on the edge of their seats — some in eager anticipation, and others simply trying to see past the heads in front — but all of them concentrate with their wide eyes on the stage. Grandparents and parents, seated beside them, whisper stories from their childhood, when they experienced the same thrill, waiting to watch Sorcar senior step into the spotlight. As applause echoes, a magician emerges from the seemingly empty 'Family Album Box', continuing the tradition of 'Indrajal'. After nearly a decade, the Sorcar magic legacy comes to Chennai, and bringing this is Pourush, the grandson of PC Sorcar Sr. — fondly known as the 'Father of Modern Indian Magic' and 'The Maharaja of Magic' — and the son of PC Sorcar Young. PC Sorcar Sr. built the Sorcar brand nearly a century ago as he picked up the hitherto neglected practice of magic from Indian street magicians. Later, he went on to awe people across the globe, starting from Japan, Australia, and USA. A few of his notable tricks are the disappearance of the Eiffel Tower for five seconds, changing the time in Japan, and cutting a lady in half. Following in his footsteps, his son and grandson are upholding the legacy.
