GAME CHANGER Premier League set for more penalties in 2025-26 as referees promise to crack down on controversial issue
PREMIER LEAGUE refs will crack down on holding in the penalty box this season - with the expectation it will mean more penalties awarded.
PGMOL and League bosses consulted with 'stakeholders' including clubs, managers, players and fans, before agreeing the new hardline approach.

Players will now only get just one verbal warning and that is it
Refs will be 'encouraged' to 'identify and penalise' holding and not just when it impacts a player's ability to play the ball.
It will see just one warning given on the pitch, with further holding being penalised.
The move is a bid to drive the examples of grappling that have become too common out of the game.

All dressing rooms and managers have been given notice of the new approach, which will come into effect from this weekend.

Refs will also enforce a new approach when players go down holding their heads, with medical staff automatically ordered on for treatment and the injured player having to leave the field for the first 30 seconds when play restarts, barring goalkeepers.
And officials have been urged to ensure they punish simulation more severely as well, with a 'robust' stance being ordered by PGMOL boss Howard Webb.
The introduction of the 'captain's only' rule, aimed at preventing officials being surrounded, will also see yellow cards brandished.

But refs have been asked to only hand out a second yellow card to a player if the foul or offence deserves it, rather than any foul after a caution leading to a dismissal.

Prem bosses have been supported in their 'high threshold' approach to decisions changed after VAR intervention after consulting with the wider game.

A survey found 83 per cent of those questioned backed that approach by officials.
According to the Prem's Key Match Incident panel of former players, managers and officials, errors after VAR have been cut by HALF over the past three seasons.
While there were 35 mistaken final decisions adjudged in the 2022-23 season, that fell to just 18 last term.
The panel ruled that five on-field decisions were wrongly changed, while a further 13 incidents where Stockley Park should have intervened were missed.

Premier League: Spurs and Sunderland open with big wins

Tottenham began the Thomas Frank era in the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 home victory over promoted side Burnley thanks to a majestic double from striker Richarlison, which included an acrobatic volley. The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he turned in a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus and the pair combined again on the hour mark when Richarlison volleyed a well-timed effort into the net to extend the lead. Six minutes later, Brennan Johnson made it 3-0 on the counter-attack after Richarlison won the ball back in midfield as Burnley struggled to deal with Spurs' press and intensity. It was no meek surrender from the visitors, however, as they managed to get forward and take nearly as many shots as Tottenham, but Scott Parker's side lacked quality in finishing. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze is understood to be closing in on a move to Tottenham. It is understood the England international has reached an agreement with current club Crystal Palace that he will not play for them at Chelsea on Sunday. Eze was a critical player as Palace won the FA Cup last season and also featured as the Eagles saw off Liverpool to lift the Community Shield last weekend. The 27-year-old – who has long been linked with a move across London – joined Palace in 2020 from QPR and has gone on to win 11 England caps. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style with a 3-0 win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the top flight, the Black Cats withstood some promising attacks spearheaded by Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen in the first half and after the break it was their Championship play-off heroes who proved to be the difference. They went ahead through Eliezer Mayenda's header and Dan Ballard soon extended the advantage, nodding home into the same spot as his last-gasp winner against Coventry in the play-off semi-finals. Substitute Wilson Isidor struck in added time to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Substitute Rodrigo Muniz struck a dramatic added-time equaliser as Fulham snatched a 1-1 Premier League draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brazilian forward Muniz pounced six minutes beyond the 90 when the Seagulls failed to deal with a Harry Wilson corner. Albion were on course to begin the season with three points after Matt O'Riley converted a 55th-minute penalty following Sander Berge's foul on Georginio Rutter. Fulham had plenty of the ball after falling behind but rode their luck and rarely tested Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen before the late twist.

Sunderland mark Premier League return in style against sorry Hammers

Premier League: Sunderland 3 (Mayenda 61, Ballard 73, Isidor 90+2) West Ham 0 Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style with a comprehensive win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland have made 11 signings so far this window and seven of those new arrivals were handed their first starts, with Trai Hume, Ballard and Mayenda the sole survivors from the starting XI who beat Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final. There were two new signings making their West Ham debuts as El Hadji Malick Diouf and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen both started and new signing Callum Wilson made the bench. Bowen threatened in the early stages, weaving through the home defence and forced a low stop from Robin Roefs at his near post before Hermansen denied Habib Diarra at the other end. The visitors began to grow in confidence, with Bowen causing particular problems and the Hammers skipper was at the heart of a brilliant chance, beginning a move which saw Diouf blast a first-time effort on goal, but Ballard made a superb block. As half-time approached, Sunderland won a series of corners, where Hermansen made a comfortable collection from Ballard's header. The hosts had an early opportunity in the second half when Mayenda managed to keep the ball in and cut a pass back into Simon Adingra, but he sliced his effort wide. Regis Le Bris made an enforced change as Jenson Seelt was taken off with an injury while challenging for the ball and Omar Alderete – who joined the club on Tuesday – came on for his debut. Diarra continued to impress for the hosts, winning a corner following a good break down the right before blasting an effort over the bar. Mayenda then found the breakthrough for Sunderland in the 61st minute when Alderete fired a looping cross into the box and the striker jumped high to nod into the bottom corner. West Ham made a double substitution as Tomas Soucek and former Newcastle striker Wilson were introduced, but the hosts extended their lead in the 73rd minute. Adingra picked out Ballard on the left side of the box and the centre-half fired a header into the bottom corner. The Hammers looked to strike in the final stages, but Bowen's flicked header from a corner was blocked and Soucek's tame effort was held by Roefs. The Sunderland goalkeeper made a great stop to tip Wilson's deflected header from a free-kick over the bar in the 88th minute. Isidor then capped off an impressive afternoon for Sunderland two minutes into added time after cutting in from the left and rolling a cool finish into the corner.

Rodrigo Muniz's stoppage-time equaliser earns Fulham last-gasp draw at Brighton

Premier League: Brighton 1 (O'Riley 55' (P)) Fulham 1 (Muniz 90+6') Substitute Rodrigo Muniz struck a dramatic added-time equaliser as Fulham snatched a 1-1 Premier League draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brighton handed a debut to Belgium left-back Maxim De Cuyper, while the visitors gave only a second top-flight start to England Under-19 midfielder Josh King amid a quiet summer transfer window which has so far brought only back-up keeper Benjamin Lecomte. Seagulls winger Yankuba Minteh, who had an early finish disallowed due to the ball going behind before Carlos Baleba crossed, sparked outrage from Fulham boss Marco Silva by flattening King with a robust challenge. There were then penalty appeals from Fulham's bench when lively 18-year-old King went down in Albion's box under pressure from defender Jan Paul van Hecke and keeper Verbruggen. Brighton had plenty of possession and the better of the limited first-half chances. Rutter's low shot was comfortably saved by Bernd Leno before Kaoru Mitoma headed O'Riley's cross on to the roof of the net. The Seagulls led within 10 minutes of the restart. Rutter went to ground after tangling with Berge as he burst into the 18-yard area and O'Riley, who scored from the spot in a 4-1 win at Tottenham on the final day of last season, confidently dispatched the ball into the bottom left corner. Fulham left-back Calvin Bassey wanted a penalty at the other end after being barged over by Baleba before a stronger shout – when King appeared to be caught by Yasin Ayari – was also waved away by referee Sam Barrott. Brighton began to drop deeper while seeking to secure breathing space on the break. Minteh blazed over following good play from Mitoma before substitute Diego Gomez almost deceived Fulham keeper Leno with a long-range effort. Seagulls winger Brajan Gruda should then have put the result beyond doubt late on. That miss looked academic but, after Verbruggen touched wide a low shot from Emile Smith Rowe, Wilson's right-wing corner flicked off the head of Lewis Dunk before being controlled and finished by Muniz at the far post in front of the delirious travelling fans. Brighton: Verbruggen, Wieffer, van Hecke, Dunk, De Cuyper, Baleba, Ayari, Minteh, O'Riley, Mitoma, Rutter. Subs: Steele, Gruda, Welbeck, Milner, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Gomez, Veltman, Coppola. Fulham: Leno, Tete, Andersen, Bassey, Cuenca, Berge, Lukic, Wilson, King, Iwobi, Jimenez. Subs: Reed, Rodrigo Muniz, Cairney, Traore, Andreas Pereira, Castagne, Diop, Smith Rowe, Lecomte. Referee: Sam Barrott (West Yorkshire)
