US banks see lower recession risk despite tariff fog
NEW YORK : Large US banks reported results that topped estimates Tuesday as executives pointed to American economic resilience and said businesses were adapting to tariff uncertainty.
Executives from JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup described US consumers as still fundamentally in good shape despite continued risks to the outlook. Both banks now see a lower risk of recession compared with April, when they last reported results.
Top officials with the banks also characterised clients as less frazzled by President Donald Trump constantly changing trade policy compared with April, when financial markets were in turmoil.
In the last week alone, Trump has threatened deep tariffs on some two dozen countries and spoken of new levies on copper and pharmaceuticals — announcements that many market watchers remain skeptical will be enacted in light of previous tariff pivots by the US president.
'The corporate community … has sort of accepted that they just need to navigate through this and are kind of getting on with it,' JPMorgan Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Barnum told reporters on a conference call.
Later on a call with Wall Street analysts, Barnum described US consumer spending as still fairly robust.
'We continue to struggle to see signs of weakness,' Barnum said. 'The consumer basically seems to be fine.'
Citigroup CFO Mark Mason said businesses had acquired more 'comfort with the uncertainty' compared to earlier in the year.
'The general sentiment has improved a bit if you look at things like the prospect of a recession, that has fallen significantly from what it was earlier in the second quarter,' Mason told reporters on a conference call.
Soft landing eyed
At JPMorgan, second-quarter profits came in at US$15 billion, down 17% from the year-ago period when results were boosted by a one-time equity item.
But that translated into US$4.96 per share, compared with US$4.49 projected by analysts behind higher profits in operating divisions.
Revenues were US$44.9 billion, down 11% from the year-ago period.
In the most recent quarter, JPMorgan benefited from higher asset management fees, as well as increased trading revenues amid financial market volatility during stretches of the quarter. These aspects helped offset higher technology expenses.
JPMorgan chief executive Jamie Dimon said investment banking activity had started slowly in the quarter, 'but gained momentum as market sentiment improved,' resulting in a seven percent gain.
Dimon described the tax cut extensions Trump recently signed into law as 'positive' for the economic outlook, along with 'potential deregulation,' according to a statement.
'However, significant risks persist –- including from tariffs and trade uncertainty, worsening geopolitical conditions, high fiscal deficits and elevated asset prices,' Dimon said. 'As always, we hope for the best but prepare the firm for a wide range of scenarios.'
During a conference call with reporters, Dimon said the cautious comments related to possible outcomes and were not a prediction.
'The world is kind of pricing in a soft landing,' he said. 'We've been in that soft landing and it may very well continue.'
At Citi, profits came in at US$4.0 billion, up 25% from the year-ago level, while revenues rose 8% to US$21.7 billion. Profits were boosted by higher markets revenue and investment banking fees, among other areas.
Mason described the macroeconomic outlook as improved from April, which points to the 'underlying strength' of the US private sector and capital markets.
'We do anticipate further consumer cooling the second half (of 2025) as tariff effects play through,' Mason said, while adding that 'the global economic performance has been quite resilient.'
Shares of JPMorgan were decline 0.8%, while Citigroup rose 3.6%.

Trump says US will charge 19% tariff on goods from Philippines
President Donald Trump greets Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr during an official visit to the White House. (AP pic) WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a new 19% tariff rate for goods from the Philippines after what he called a 'beautiful visit' by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to the White House, saying US goods would pay zero tariffs. Trump posted the news on his Truth Social media platform after meeting with Marcos in the Oval Office, where he had signalled a deal could be reached during the visit. 'It was a beautiful visit, and we concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States, and ZERO Tariffs. The Philippines will pay a 19% Tariff,' Trump said, calling Marcos a 'very good and tough negotiator.' Trump said the two Pacific allies would also work together militarily but gave no details. Marcos, the first Southeast Asian leader to meet Trump in his second term, told reporters at the start of the meeting that the US was his country's 'strongest, closest, most reliable ally.' The 19% tariff rate was just below the 20% threatened by Trump earlier this month, but above the 17% rate set in April when Trump announced what he called reciprocal tariff rates for dozens of countries. It matches the 19% rate announced for Indonesia and bests Vietnam's slightly higher rate of 20%. The US had a deficit of nearly US$5 billion with the Philippines last year on bilateral goods trade of US$23.5 billion. Trump said the two countries did 'a lot of business' with each other, adding the 'very big numbers' in the trade agreement would only grow larger. During the Oval Office event, Trump said he may visit China for a landmark trip 'in the not-too-distant future' and noted the Philippines had distanced itself from Beijing after his election last November. 'The country was maybe tilting toward China, but we un-tilted it very, very quickly,' Trump said. The US president has sought to lower tensions with Beijing in recent weeks after pausing a tit-for-tat tariff war that has upended global trade and supply chains. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday he would meet with Chinese officials in Sweden next week. Critics warn Trump's tariffs on nearly all foreign goods could boost prices for US consumers, complicating his push for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. No comment was immediately available from Marcos, who did not speak to reporters before leaving the White House grounds. Philippine assistant foreign secretary Raquel Solano said last week trade officials have been working with US counterparts seeking to seal a 'mutually acceptable and mutually beneficial' deal. Protesters gathered near the White House as Marcos arrived, demanding the Philippine leader address pleas of Filipino Americans and migrant workers who have made multiple requests for support amid US immigration raids. Trump underscored the importance of the US-Philippine military relationship. 'They're a very important nation militarily, and we've had some great drills lately,' he said. Marcos, who arrived in Washington on Sunday, met with defence secretary Pete Hegseth and secretary of state Marco Rubio on Monday. During his trip, he will also meet US business leaders investing in the Philippines. Philippine officials say Marcos planned to stress that Manila must become economically stronger if it is to serve as a truly robust US partner in the Indo-Pacific. He told reporters his country was modernising its military in response to tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea.

New York mayoral frontrunner Mamdani leaves business leaders divided on opposition strategy
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani speaks at an event to celebrate his endorsement from District Council 37, New York's City's largest labor union, in New York City, U.S., July 15, 2025. REUTERS/Adam Gray/File Photo NEW YORK (Reuters) -The business community in New York City is scrambling to figure out who to support in November's mayoral race, with many leaders saying either Andrew Cuomo or Mayor Eric Adams needs to drop out for the other to have a chance against surprise Democratic primary winner Zohran Mamdani. Following Cuomo's announcement that he would stay in the race as an independent after losing to Mamdani, New York-based CEOs have yet to coalesce behind either the former governor or incumbent Adams in their bid to defeat Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who won the primary in June. Several business leaders who would only speak under the condition of anonymity said they would support Cuomo, while others were backing Adams, a former police captain who was elected mayor as a Democrat in 2021 but this year decided to run as an independent, as less sure of the former governor's leaders are taking a wait-and-see approach -- though others believe that could be a bad move, keeping another candidate from gaining momentum. Mamdani won the June 24 primary with 56% of the vote, bolstered by young voters drawn to his social media presence and messaging focused on solving the city's affordability crisis. Polling suggests he would prevail over a fractured field of Cuomo, Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, but some polls suggest Cuomo would win a head-to-head matchup against Mamdani in heavily Democratic New York. Business owners are concerned that Mamdani's proposals, which include rent freezes, free city buses and city-owned grocery stores, would add to residents' tax burden and cause an exodus of capital. Mamdani says his plans, which also include free childcare, would be paid for by raising corporate taxes and imposing an additional 2% income tax on New Yorkers earning more than $1 million a year. 'I can only vote for one candidate in November, and that decision won't be made until closer to Election Day,' said Jared Epstein, president of real-estate owner and developer Aurora Capital Associates, in an email. 'Until then, like nearly every one of the 20,000 contacts in my phone, my position is simple: ABZ – 'Anyone But Zohran.'" Mamdani has raised about $820,000 since the primary through July 21, according to the city's campaign finance board. Few prominent business leaders have publicly come out in support of Mamdani, who has received endorsements from unions that previously backed recent days, Mamdani met with executives in a meeting organized by the nonprofit Partnership for New York City. "He did a pretty good job of making the case that he was open to conversations, discussion and learning, and that he wanted to build a coalition that would represent all New Yorkers," said Kathy Wylde, president and chief executive officer of the group. Cuomo has said he would drop out by September if he isn't the clear favorite and has urged others to do the same, though by state law his name would remain on the ballot. He has raised just $64,000 since June 10. Adams has raised roughly $1.5 million since June 10. Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who own luxury real estate company Renaissance Properties, hosted a fundraiser for Adams in Long Island's Hamptons over the 4th of July weekend. Adams has also received support on social media from hedge-fund managers Bill Ackman and Daniel Loeb. He has been endorsed by 13 police unions. Hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson, who ran in this year's Democratic mayoral primary, receiving just 0.8% of the vote, said in an email that once the election is one month away, "it will hopefully be clear who's better positioned to beat Mamdani and ONLY THEN should the other guy drop." Neither Cuomo nor Mamdani's campaigns responded to a request for comment. Todd Shapiro, spokesperson for Adams, said Adams made New York stronger after the pandemic and will continue to deliver results for the business community in New York. Sliwa, who is polling behind both Mamdani and Cuomo, said he is not planning on dropping out; Sliwa, as the Republican candidate in the 2021 mayoral general election won 27.8% of the vote.
