Conan Gray Masters the Art of Yearning in 'This Song' Lyrics
The Conan Gray-shaped hole in your heart is about to be filled, because the singer-songwriter is officially back with the latest single off his upcoming album, 'This Song.'
Along with heartfelt lyrics that openly yearn for romance, the track is married with whimsical string-heavy production reminiscent of the Goo Goo Dolls' 'Iris'... we can hear those TikTok mashups already. The song brings Conan back to his vulnerable bedroom pop songwriting roots, which is fitting since he wrote most of his fourth studio album, Wishbone, from that very place.
Wishbone is set to be released on August 29, and Conan revealed that he had 'secretly' stumbled upon the writing process almost two years ago.
'Over the past two years, I've been secretly writing songs. After shows in the basements of the venues, in the sheets of my hotel beds, in narrow gaps between tours— I'd come back home and write all the things I felt nobody wanted to hear. Maybe even the things I didn't want people to hear,' Conan wrote on Instagram. 'It felt like the music was reminding me who I am, at an experimental time in my twenties where 'who I am' had no definition at all.'
He continued, 'I played the songs to the very first person I'd ever made music with, Dan Nigro, and I quietly began to record. I didn't know why I was recording, I just was. I didn't know what story I was telling, I was just living in it. Slowly I started to see myself in full picture. The slivers of myself I'd always been, but never faced. The songs I'd always been writing, but never singing. Before I knew it I was surrounded by an album.'
That being said! Now seems like a good time to learn the lyrics of 'This Song' as Conan is hitting a few music festivals later this year.
Lyrics by Conan Gray
[Verse 1]
Yeah, I know that I love you
And I have a feeling that you love me back
I'm sat in my bedroom
And I hear your heart like a train on the tracks
Your eyes are like heaven
Your voice is like rain
Eleven elevens, they all hear your name
Too shy to tell you the words on my mind
I hope you can see if you read through these lines
Get in, it's time to yearn (aka... a likely thing to do during a Conan song). In the first verse, he confesses his love for his subject with pure poetry. When he feels those emotions could potentially be reciprocated, he seemingly calls back to Train's 'Drops of Jupiter': 'She acts like summer / and walks like rain.'
Conan shares that he wishes for this person every time the clock turns 11:11 — it's also a nod to another Wishbone track of the same name.
[Chorus]
That I wrote this song about you
A song that I wish you knew
A song that I tried to sing
But now I'll say it straight
I wrote this song about you
In case the subject needed clarity on whether this song was about them... now they know.
[Verse 2]
I drive through the suburbs
And you're playing all of your favorite songs
You joke about your mother
She can't help but cry when she hears Elton John
You're singing obnoxious
I'm laughing like spring
Your brown racer jacket
My hands through the sleeves
The smell of your perfume
Is all over me
I can't wash it off so it's easy to see
The second verse is truly what love is all about... it's the little things. Singing along to Elton John songs, wearing each other's clothes, and embracing the lingering scent of each other's fragrances.
Also, there could be a cute lil Easter egg that potentially ties back to Conan's bestie, Olivia Rodrigo, here with 'You're singing obnoxious' and her 'Deja Vu' lyrics: 'Watching re-runs of Glee / Being annoying.'
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
You know that I love you
Is it dumb believing you might love me too?
Yeah
[Outro]
(I wrote this song about you)
(I wrote this song about you)
You know that I love you

Fan-favourite Toronto hockey star Emma Maltais on her love of fashion and life in the PWHL spotlight
When hockey player Emma Maltais — Toronto Sceptres team member, Olympic gold medal winner, three-time world champion — pauses to reflect on this moment in her life, 'a little overwhelmed' is the phrase she uses. 'It's day-to-day survival,' says Maltais. When we speak with her, she's at home in Toronto, freshly returned from a Sceptres away game in Minnesota and already packing to join Team Canada in the Czech Republic at the Women's World Championship. (They'd claim silver in a nail-biting 4-3 final against the U.S.) Her packed schedule is a direct result of the enthusiasm that has greeted the PWHL [Professional Women's Hockey League] since it launched in 2023, its packed arenas and cheering crowds reflecting the global groundswell for women's professional sports . 'It's a lot, and it's something that all of us aren't used to,' says Maltais. 'When you add the attention that the PWHL has gotten and the attention I've been lucky enough to have, sometimes there can be pressure with that, and responsibility.' Here's how she's navigating it. Maltais is a forward known for her scrappy style and cheeky comebacks, and she's emerged as one of the league's fan favourites. 'I would die for this woman,' wrote one Reddit commenter underneath a video of Maltais' off-the-cuff comments while mic'd up during a game. 'I love Emma's energy,' says another. On TikTok, Maltais documents her life as a professional athlete — locker room pranks, bus rides to games, days off in the cities the teams travel to. One of her viral videos, which has 1.2 million views, features her Sceptres teammates pulling disgusted faces in reaction to a comment about how women playing professional hockey can't be taken seriously. Maltais happens to be five foot two, a beacon to short people who've felt their height was an obstacle to athletic success. 'I don't want to say that it's adversity, but it's something that a lot of women deal with,' she says with a laugh. 'It's important to see that it's still possible if you're short — and it's possible to be one of the stronger, tougher players.' A post shared by Emma Maltais (@emmamaltais17) The growing opportunities for athlete fashion collabs — like a recent Barbie x PWHL fashion collection — are pure joy for Maltais, who loves a 'really high heel,' the butter yellow trend and a hair bow; her most recent purchase is a pink Coach Tabby bag. 'When I was growing up and playing hockey with the boys, I was put into a shirt and tie and I would have to wear the same boys' peacoat,' she says. 'I remember a couple years later, running into one of the boys' parents and they were like, 'Oh Emma, you look girlie,' and I was like, 'Yeah, because I am a girl.'' To her, the PWHL letting players express 'their own unique style' feels like progress. 'I love the feeling when someone looks at me and says, 'Oh I like your outfit, it's different,'' she says. 'I also love feeling powerful in a great outfit.' Emma Maltais in a recent Bravado bra campaign. 'A bra is just another piece of clothing,' says Maltais, who recently starred in a campaign for Bravado Designs, now the PWHL official bra partner. 'It's a miss that we don't talk about it.' The sooner we can dissolve the stigma around bra-wearing, and other women's issues, the better, she adds. So what is a pro athlete looking for in a sports bra? 'Support, so I don't feel like I'm all over the place,' she says. 'I also look for comfort, softness, and a bra that's not digging in. Also, is it pretty? That's important.' Her own bra wardrobe has benefited from this partnership. 'I've had sports bras in my closet that are as old as when I started wearing bras,' she says. '[Working with Bravado] was the first time in 15 years that I actually got my breasts sized and felt good in a bra that wasn't a janky old sports bra where the seams were coming out.' Maltais recognizes that she's part of this trail-blazing vanguard because her own career is blooming at the exact right time. 'There are so many women before me who wish they had gotten the opportunity to play in the PWHL,' says Maltais. Many of her high school friends who played sports have told her they wish they'd known women's pro sports would grow this much, because they wouldn't have dropped out. 'When I zoom out and think about the position I'm in, I'm eternally grateful,' she says. But being around powerhouses like her teammate Sarah Nurse has taught her to keep expanding her ambition. 'As women, we tend to be very grateful for our opportunities, but it doesn't mean we should put limits on things.' She measures success on two levels: The scoreboard on game day, and her impact on the community, like when a young girl asks her for a photo and tells her that she's playing hockey now. 'Those are times where you really realize the impact you can have.'

Fundraiser for teen who rushed to Burger King shift after graduation skyrockets to $130K — and keeps climbing
A fundraiser that went viral when a stranger shared a TikTok about a Georgia teen who rushed to work a Burger King shift hours after his high school graduation has raised more than double its goal this week — and the sum is still swelling. The 'From Burger King to a College Dream' fund skyrocketed to nearly $130,000 as of Saturday afternoon, a mouth-watering sum Mykale Baker plans to use to fulfill his dream of higher education. 'I feel happy,' Baker, 18, said in an interview with 11 Alive this week. Advertisement 3 Mykale Baker rushed to a night shift at Burger King just hours after graduating high school. GoFundMe 'I just want to say thank you to my parents and all the people that see the good in me and believe in me, and donated all that money to me.' The online fundraiser reached the staggering goal within just 10 days of being established. Advertisement Thousands of dollars trickled in across the first few days, but soared to six figures when the heartwarming story was shared across social media and news outlets — quickly decimating the $60,000 goal. Donors included thousands of well-wishers, most of whom were strangers. 3 The fundraiser took off thanks to a viral video of the teen taken by Maria Mendoza. gofundme 'Remember this money is for you. Not for mama, the church, or others in need. It's an investment in your future. Invest it in yourself wisely and you'll have much more to share with others down the road!' one anonymous donor wrote. Advertisement The incredible saga sprouted from what fundraising organizer Maria Mendoza thought was a simple TikTok video that she shared 'without thinking' of Baker working at the fast food chain with his graduation stole and medal still around his neck. The 18-year-old picked up the shift at the Dacula, Georgia, restaurant where he worked after seeing the late-night rush on May 21, despite crossing the graduation stage at Mills Creek High School just hours earlier. 3 The fundraiser nearly reached $130,000 as of Saturday. GoFundMe 'He was so kind, so polite,' Mendoza told the outlet. 'Radiating joy, even after such a big day. His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that.' Advertisement She returned to the chain a few days later to reveal the hefty donations, and the teen was brought to tears over the generosity. Baker revealed the uncertainty he faced post-graduation because of financial restrictions, but was hoping to go to a trade school. 'I'm just grateful I got to do something for him,' Mendoza said. 'He inspired me.'
