Cambridge Audio's acclaimed streaming amp gets an impressive audio upgrade

When Cambridge Audio launched the Evo 150 streaming amplifier in 2021 it attracted a host of five-star reviews. Now there's a new version that promises to be even better.
The Evo 150 SE – the SE is short for Special Edition – is the result of 100s of hours of choosing, tweaking and improving components, claims the firm. And according to chief technical officer Matt Dore, it has "pushed the boundaries of what to expect from Class D amplification".
The Evo 150 SE has 2 x 150W (at 8 ohms) of Hypex NCOREx Class D amplification, which has then been tuned by Cambridge Audio itself.
It's built around the fourth generation of the firm's StreamMagic system, which enables you to stream directly from Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music, Deezer, Qobuz, Roon Ready, UPnP and Internet Radio over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Wireless connectivity includes Bluetooth aptX HD, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast, and it's fully compatible with Google Home, AirPlay and Roon multi-room systems.
There's HDMI ARC for your TV, as well as a moving magnet phono stage, RCA and balanced XLR inputs, two optical digital inputs, a coaxial digital input, and USB audio / USB media. That then feeds into the system's ESS SABRE ES9018k2m.
There are two sets of speaker outs, a subwoofer out and pre-outs that enable you to use the amp as a pre-amp or solely as an audio source. And you can add the firm's Evo CD transport for your disc collection.
As a nice touch, the design is 12-inches by 12-inches to match a vinyl record sleeve, and there's a 6.8-inch colour screen that you can switch between modern information deliver and old-school virtual VU meters. There's a choice of two magnetically attached side panel designs too, in real wood or "modern industrial chic".
The Cambridge Audio Evo 150 SE will be available from July 2025 at cambridgeaudio.com and approved retailers. It'll come with a recommended price tag of £1,999 / €2,399 / $3,299 (about AU$4,142). That's the same as the original Evo 150.

European Parliament Wants To Reduce Cost Of Sustainability Reporting Requirements
People walk by a European Union flag (Photo by) The European Parliament is debating legislation to reduce sustainability reporting requirements in the European Union. The original proposal of the European Commission included a drastic reduction of the scope of a pair of sustainability reporting directives. The member leading the drafting of the Parliament's has released his draft proposal, calling for even more cuts, alarming sustainability activists and emboldening business interests. That proposal was debated in the June 24 meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs, known as JURI. As part of the European Green Deal, a trilogy of directives were passed by the EU to force businesses to address climate change and report greenhouse gas missions. However, the cost of these proposals on businesses and the broader impact on the EU economy became a theme during the 2024 elections. The shift to the right in EU politics embolden opponents. As a result, the Commission proposed a package of new directives to 'reduce the burden' on businesses. The Omnibus Simplification Package was officially adopted by the Commission in February. The proposal is being debated in the Council and the Parliament. In the Parliament, the debate is public and working through multiple committees, giving interest parties and MEPs the opportunity to voice their opinions. JURI, is the primary committee that will produce the legislation that will be sent to the full Parliament for a vote. MEP Jörgen Warborn, of the European People's Party, has been designated as the rapporteur to lead the drafting of the final legislation. Warborn's draft report was made public on June 6. The draft includes 82 proposed amendments. During the June 24 JURI meeting, the Committee addressed the proposed amendments. Warburn was given the opportunity to share his initial proposal and the shadow rapporteurs gave initial comments. Jörgen Warborn Warburn stated the EPP's goal in the proposal. 'We would like to go further in cutting costs, because we need to strengthen European competitiveness in order to create long-term prosperity for European citizens.' To justify the need for cuts, he stated "sustainability rests on three pillars: the environmental pillar, the social pillar, and the economic pillar… if one breaks, the stretcher collapses." He then outlined his 10 key priorities in the proposal: MEP Lara Wolters, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Lara Wolters, of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), stated her group felt the 'Commission proposal was extremely rushed and deeply flawed.' She says that the proposal is not focused on removing the administrative burden, rather on removing accountability. She did not get into the specifics of the S&D proposal, but gave a vigorous counterargument to reductions. Countering the EPP's push to lower costs on businesses, she stated that she 'is not inspired by this… It is our job to weigh public versus private interests. But if costs are all the EPP cares about at the moment, then at least let us be honest that the costs are merely being displaced. Costs reduced for companies here are costs that the world will need to shoulder anyway. Climate denial comes at a cost. So does environmental degradation, exploitation, and inequality. So does feeding populism.' MEP Pascal Canfin, The Renew Group Pascal Canfin, of the Renew Europe Group, stated that he agrees with the EPP on the auditing of the CSRD report. He believes there is room to negotiation on that topic and reduce cost beyond the Commission proposal. He stated that he agrees in cost reduction, but that the EPP proposal does not deliver that. Focusing on capital market union, he said investors need data. The reduction in of the CSRD may save costs on paper, but will increase costs in the long term as investors spend more to gather the data. He will be offering amendments to address those concerns. Renew will also present amendments to address the single market approach and what he views as conflict with the restriction on civil liability causing market fragmentation. He also took issue with the application of the 3000 employee threshold to non-EU companies, claiming that would exempt nearly all non-EU companies from the scope. Interestingly, he stated the calculation of the employee count for non-EU companies is not based on total employees in the EU, rather total employees in a member state. MEP Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, Group of the Greens/ European Free Alliance (EFA) Kira Peter-Hansen, of the Group of the Greens/ European Free Alliance (EFA), stated that they agree with simplification and "reporting must be both meaningful and manageable.' However, she agrees with the S&D that the Omnibus and the EPP proposals go beyond simplification into deregulation. She pointed out that the raised thresholds not only eliminate 80% of the companies, but also some member states as they do not have any companies large enough to comply. She encouraged the use of the EFRAG data to simplify the data points in the European Sustainability Reporting Standards to simplify reporting requirements without 'weakening impact.' She accused the EPP of 'choosing populistic, symbolic changes over actual needed changes that would benefit from a revision." Further, she stated that 'removing climate transition plans completely is not just wrong, it is irresponsible.' She encouraged the adoption of a risk-based approach over the Commission proposal of mapping the value chain, claiming it would increase costs for companies. Finally, she objected to the removal of civil liability in the CSDDD. MEP Arash Saeidi, The Left Group Arash Saeidi, of The Left, opened by stated that 'there are men, women, and children whose rights are being breached and they're just being seen as cogs in the wheel of a production - modern slavery, textiles workers, forced labor to produce our electronics.. workers killed on sites. The CSDDD is designed to put an end to impunity and finally holding companies legally accountable from environmental damage and infringement of human rights.' He stated that The Left will present a proposal to reject all the proposed changes and stay with the existing text in the CSRD and CSDDD. Political parties and MEP had until June 27 to submit amendments. On July 15, the shadow rapporteurs will meet to discus the amendments and begin negotiations. To pass, the proposal needs majority support. Committee opinions are being drafted by Economic and Monetary Affairs, known as ECON, Environment, Climate and Food Safety, known as ENVI, Foreign Affairs, known as AFET, International Trade, known as INTA, and Employment and Social Affairs, known as EMPL. Those will be sent to JURI for consideration. I suspect Warborn's proposal is a negotiation tactic. By promoting a position that is more extreme than the original Commission proposal, the EPP has room to negotiate. However, the recent proposal by the Council was also to the right of the Commission. The final Parliament proposal may end up being the middle ground. JURI is expected to adopt the final language to reduce the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive on October 13. Following the vote of the Parliament, designated representatives from the Parliament, Council, and Commission will enter into "trilogue" negotiations. The proposals from each of the three bodies will vary. The trilogue will negotiate the differences to produce a final directive. That directive will be sent to the Council and Parliament for a final vote in December or January.

With Wirtz added to the team, the Reds will take some catching next season. Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold departed Liverpool to join Real Madrid and so there might still be bigger fish than the Reds in the European soccer pond. In English soccer, though, Liverpool is setting the standard. Wirtz is one of the best players of his generation and he has chosen Anfield as the perfect stage for the next, and best, phase of his career.

This Humanoid Robot Can Lift 220 Pounds But Has Super-Sensitive Skin
Neura Robotics' CEO David Reger with the third-generation 4NE-1 humanoid robot Neura Robotics Neura Robotics officially unveiled the third generation of its 4NE-1 humanoid robot this week, along with a household robot named MiPa, an open robotics ecosystem called the Neuraverse, and a vision for an app store for robots. The 4NE-1 humanoid robot is powerful but also sensitive: able to lift more than any other humanoid robot I've seen, but also able to sense human touch. Additionally, Neura said it plans to ship 5,000,000 robots of varying kinds by 2030–significantly more than the 100,000 Figure plans to ship –and that the first shipping 4NE-1 humanoid robots would be delivered this year. 'We are excited to launch a series of robots,' CEO David Reger told me last week on the TechFirst podcast. 'There is also a household device MiPa coming, and also new other industrial robot types, but in the end I think the core is actually the Neuraverse platform, which is combining all of this on one platform and makes it actually scalable and reachable to reach the five million humanoid robots on this planet.' The big news on the hardware side is a full launch of 4NE-1, which Reger says is now production ready. This is a beast of a humanoid robot, with 100kg or 220-pound lift capacity with its legs, and 10kg or 22 pounds with its hands. After teasing this launch in March , Neura delivered. As specced by the company, 4NE-1 is a technological marvel, with seven cameras, LIDAR, and much more. It will be capable of doing a backflip, Reger says, which not only summons up visions of Boston Dynamics' humanoid robots, but also speaks to speed coupled with power. 4NE-1 is one of the first humanoid robots that will have skin. While Neura isn't revealing too many details about the skin on 4NE-1, based on what he did say, it sounds like a capacitive touch sensor capability like that on your smartphone's screen. It can sense near touch, actual touch, and the strength or power of that touch. Interestingly, it will be applied via a spray-on process, and the result won't be visually distinguishable from the rest of the robot. And while it won't cover the whole robot, it likely will be on the hands, arms, and torso. Why put skin on a robot? It's critical for how Neura wants humanoid robots to interact with and work with humans safely in close quarters. 'The skin is actually … of our biggest gifts,' Reger says. "Having the ability to have the feeling of touch gives you a complete different way of how humans interact with each other.' 4NE-1's skin will sense proximity before actual touch, he added, making interactions safer, more precise, and emotionally intelligent. While the hardware news is always the headline-grabber, probably the more important news is the backend technology. That includes Neura's Omnisensor technology, which fuses location and spatial awareness from seven cameras, a LIDAR system, and even a microphone to help each 4NE-1 unit know where it is, proximity to objects and humans, and how to get what it needs while avoiding what it should not hit. Neura Robotics' third-generation 4NE-1 humanoid robot Neura Robotics Integrating all that data will be some fairly serious onboard technology. Reger didn't say what kind of CPUs or GPUs 4NE-1 will include, but it is worth noting that Nvidia is a technology partner of Neura Robotics. Neura is also partnering with Nvidia on 'robot gyms' where robots learn tasks and develop abilities. Another major piece of new technology supporting Neura's robotic roll-out is the 'Neuraverse.' Neuraverse is an operating system, a development platform for robotics, and an app store for skills, abilities, and even microservices that anyone can come to, build capabilities, and release them for sale. What one robot learns, all others can know instantly. Developers and companies employing humanoid robots can buy, sell, or offer for free abilities like welding specific parts or building a specific product. 'We are fundamentally changing how people interact with machines,' says Reger. "Our Neuraverse is the product that connects everything: the operating system of the robotics era." MiPa is a wheeled personal assistant robot John Koetsier Finally, Neura also unveiled MiPa, a wheeled robot that will be more affordable for the home market. While anyone can use it, one specific designed use case is assisting the elderly with being able to remain in their own homes and age in place, Reger says. Neura calls MiPa 'the world's first cognitive household and service robot suitable for real everyday use.' MiPa will be able to vacuum, unload dishwashers, clean up rooms, and monitor health signs. In fact, Neura says, MiPa supports IoT and health device standards and can connect with wearables to collect data, analyze sleep, and more. As all of Neura's other robots, MiPa will be connected to the Neuraverse, meaning it can learn new skills instantly from other robots and apply them locally. Neura is entering an increasingly crowded humanoid robot market that has yet to fully deliver on its promise of an always-on, cheap, capable, and reliable workforce, but 4NE-1 is a compelling entrant. I'm not certain that 4NE-1 delivers on the company's vision of having the most capable humanoid on the planet, but it's a contender. If humanoid robots is our version of the space race, as Apptronik CEO Jeff Cardenas told me recently, Neura Robotics is Europe's leading challenger. What we haven't seen yet is video on how 4NE-1 walks and moves, which will be critical for starting to understand how capable this robot is in a factory or warehouse.
