Arsenal's private feeling on Viktor Gyokeres transfer amid major stumbling block

Daily Mirror11-07-2025
Viktor Gyokeres has decided he will not play for Sporting Lisbon ever again as he bids to try and secure a move away from the club by going on strike amid Arsenal's interest
Arsenal are still optimistic they will sign Viktor Gyokeres, who is threatening to go on strike to force a move. Gyokeres, 27, has told Sporting Lisbon he will not report up for pre-season training as they prepare to return this week.
Reports in Portugal say Gyokeres wants to take drastic action to push through a £70m move to the Emirates. There has been an increasingly ugly stand-off between Gyokeres and Sporting president Frederico Varandas who is refusing to let him go without a fight.

Gyokeres has effectively agreed personal terms on a five year contract but the clubs have stalled on agreeing a fee. Earlier this week Sporting imposed a 'cooling off' period after talks with Arsenal failed to produce agreement.

Arsenal remain optimistic and keen but the move is in danger of stalling even though Gyokores is desperate to move to the Emirates. Sporting want around £70m with at least £60m up front and the rest in add-ons while Gyokores has insisted he has a 'gentleman's agreement' allowing him to go.
Varandas has denied any such agreement is in place and Sporting are determined to stand firm on the price.

That is the big obstacle but there is still huge optimism that the deal will get done for Gyokeres to become Arsenal's new No9. Gyokeres is making it clear he does not want to return to Sporting in a further stand-off but talks are being seen as drawn out rather than stalled.

The ex-Coventry and Brighton striker Gyokeres left English football to become a huge hit in Portugal where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances. Arsenal believe he can score the goals to be a hit in English football and they are pushing hard to get business done before they jet off on their preseason tour.
They are closing in on a deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke despite huge fan backlash against his signature.

They have announced Brentford's Christian Norgaard in a £12m deal, they have completed a deal on keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Arsenal also need to tie down Ethan Nwaneri, 18, who is entering the final year of his contract but wants playing time and the uncertainty around his future - with him fitting perfectly into Chelsea's model - is a huge concern.

Ex-Celtic striker 'will' join La Liga club in cut-price deal

The 27-year-old forward is expected to join Girona from English Premier League club Crystal Palace in a €6 million transfer. Edouard, who is entering the final year of his contract with Palace, has made 103 appearances for the club since his transfer from Celtic four years ago. Read more: Last season, he was loaned to Leicester City, but only made six appearances. This summer, Footmercato reports that he will make a permanent move to Girona. His transfer coincides with the move of Arnau Martinez, Girona's young Spanish defender, in the opposite direction, although these are separate transactions. Earlier in the summer, Edouard was loosely linked with a return to Celtic, but this was quickly dismissed by Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers said: "I'm not worried so much about a big name. "It's about the collective of the team. "Big names don't always give you want you need. "This team needs hunger, goals and work rate and intensity. "Big names don't always give you that. "It's about big players. "I just want players who are hungry to learn but also ready now. "There are lots of players linked with us. "Odsonne hasn't been on my radar, to be fair. "I obviously know him, but it's about a player who will fit into the structure of the team."

Tynecastle already feels like home for the 29-year-old, who has settled in seamlessly ahead of the new season. Maybe it was just always meant to be that he would end up at Hearts. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After all, he's been a transfer target for the Jambos on more than one occasion. Robbie Neilson tried to bring him to Gorgie four years ago and he's persistently been linked with a transfer. Finally he had the maroon and white scarf above his head last month when a season-long loan with Oxford United was brokered. It was his former manager at Kilmarnock in Derek McInnes who got the move over the line. The duo teamed up well at Rugby Park and Findlay was keen to follow him east to Hearts. Football has been enjoyable for the centre-half under the gaffer. That hasn't always been the case after he ended his first spell at Killie to join Philadelphia Union over in the States four years ago. (Photo by Craig Williamson / SNS Group) | SNS Group 'I'll be the first to admit, when I had the option to leave Oxford on a loan to go back to Kilmarnock, I didn't have many options, I've been totally honest with you,' said Findlay. 'When Derek McInnes came in for me at Kilmarnock, he was a manager that obviously I respected greatly, it was a club that meant a lot to me. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It worked at the time, and I think for him to get me from where I was two years previous to where I was at the end of his tenure at Kilmarnock, I think it would be an absolute madness for me not to want to continue that working relationship. 'I think he's a manager that knows what my skill set is, he knows how to get out of me, and as I said, when I got the chance to learn off him again, it was something I just generally couldn't knock down. 'Not only that, to then come to a club with the stature of Hearts. I had maybe the chance a few years before I moved to America, but now that I'm here and I see what the club's all about, I'm delighted to get another bite of the cherry. And to be able to do it with an extra four or five years experience behind me, I think not only me, but the club's going to benefit from that.' (Photo by Ross MacDonald / SNS Group) | SNS Group Findlay is asked to expand on what could have been in 2021. 'Yeah, I don't think it was any secret, I think it was Robbie Neilson who was the manager, I was very, very close to going there,' he continued. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'But I think the opportunity that I got in America was something at the time I couldn't knock back. It was a massive, massive opportunity which maybe just didn't work out football-wise the way that I did, but it's not something I regret. It's something that I might have never got the chance to do again, definitely wouldn't have got the chance to do again, it's something I had to explore at the time. 'But as I said, there's always that little gnawing feeling in the back of your head of what could have happened if I'd went elsewhere. So to be able to come here, I think a better player to what I was back then, with a manager who fully knows what I'm about, it can only be a positive for me.' Such has been Findlay's form in Scotland, there are a few left puzzled why Oxford have not granted him more chances. His contract expires next summer and there is next to no chance of a return. Findlay is incredibly candid on it all. 'It's a bit of a strange situation that I've got with Oxford,' he explained. 'I would first admit the year that I was down there I didn't set the heather alight. I was really disappointed, I maybe wasn't in the right place mentally and physically that I wanted to be when I was at Oxford, but these things happen, football players take dips at certain times. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I thought they'd maybe made their mind up that that just wasn't the idea for them, I can't blame them because I didn't produce the way I did. But at the same time when you've got a manager who wants you as much as the gaffer here did, I think both clubs were happy to get something done in the meantime. 'I can't worry about what other clubs are wanting, I just only worry about the club where I am, and that's Hearts, and I just really want to have a good year for Hearts now.' Hearts defender Stuart Findlay at full time after the Premier Sports Cup group stage win over Hamilton Academical. (Photo by Rob Casey / SNS Group) | SNS Group The Jambos - and McInnes - are happy to have him. He's been part of a team that won all four Premier Sports Cup group games comfortably ahead of the Premiership opener on Monday night at home to Aberdeen. Excitement is building in Gorgie after last season's underwhelming campaign. 'I don't think you realise how big a club Hearts is until you're involved in it,' said Findlay. 'Obviously you come to Tynecastle once or twice a season, you know they're a big side. But until you come here and you see how passionate the fans are. And not only that, just the demand for success at a club like Hearts is something that I'm really happy to be a part of. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'When the manager spoke to me, we were both wanting to come here because we both knew what success looked like at Hearts. It's something that we both aligned ourselves with. So we're going to have to back it up and make sure we put in the performances to reach the ambitions.

Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta may see five stars sold amid Eberechi Eze chase

Arsenal's busy summer transfer window could continue with a deal for Eberechi Eze but focus is now turning to sales with five players potentially heading for the Emirates exit Arsenal are back in London following their pre-season tour of Asia, with Mikel Arteta's much-changed squad now fine tuning ahead of a friendly against Villarreal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening. ‌ And with a fortnight to go before their Premier League campaign begins with a trip to Manchester United, the Gunners continue to be linked with a deal for Crystal Palace and England star Eberechi Eze. ‌ That, however, may require a number of players to exit the club and reports suggest five different members of the first-team squad could potentially move on. ‌ Here are the transfer tales from in and around the Emirates to keep an eye on. Five sales Mikel Arteta could bid farewell to five of his squad before the close of the transfer window, according to the Daily Mail. Reiss Nelson is the most likely to head off amid admiring glances from Fulham and his departure would see the Gunners' wage bill trimmed by £100,000 per week. Oleksandr Zinchenko, who earns £150,000, is also for sale, while Fabio Vieira is far down the pecking order but has garnered some interest from West Ham and Albert Sambi Lokonga is another allowed to leave. Then there is Leandro Trossard, whom Arsenal want to sign a new contract but is on a shortlist of targets at Borussia Dortmund. ‌ Eze latest Eberechi Eze remains a potential addition before the transfer window closes but there remains a significant hurdle - the asking price. BBC Sport now report that Arsenal have "shown no inclination of triggering the forward's release fee", with the Gunners looking to sell before they make any more new signings. The report adds that Arsenal value Eze at less than £68m and "want to negotiate a deal beneath the agreement." Palace have so far been unwilling to negotiate a lower fee, but it is claimed that may change later in the window. ‌ Gyokeres' respect Viktor Gyokeres has refused to follow his agent in criticising former club Sporting CP for how they dealt with his summer move. The 27-year-old's Premier League switch was dragged out until last week, with clashes over a gentleman's agreement and a hefty fine issued. Gyokeres, having established himself as one of Europe's finest goalscorers with 97 goals in 104 appearances for Sporting, always looked destined to make a big switch this window. He joined the Gunners last weekend for a fee rising to £63.7million, having also been courted by Manchester United, who he chose to snub. "I don't need to throw mud at anyone," began the Swede, who made his first appearance for the Gunners against bitter rivals Tottenham on Thursday in Hong Kong. "I don't need to say what others have done or decided. "I don't do that, even though there are people who seem to need to tell others how to behave. I'm not like that. As a footballer, you always strive to reach the top. I felt ready to take the next step, and I believe many people at the club expected that before the season ended.
