Gurugram Traffic Police has reportedly issued a total of 1,216 challans from July 1 to 20 under a special drive against 'Drink & Drive' offenders. The campaign led by IPS, Vikas Arora and DCP Traffic, Rajesh Mohan, is an effort to make the roads safer by maintaining law and order on the public roads. Drinking and driving leads to fatal road accidents and is punishable by law under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
According to further details published by the Traffic Police department, about seven of these challans were issued to female drivers and one vehicle was impounded. A user also commented on the social media post made by the authority, raising concerns about people being allowed to drive after the challans. He wrote: 'The whole intent of this drive is no one should drink and drive. Even after challan, the person continues to drive his vehicle. Have you impounded all 1216 vehicles? If not, then challans are only helping the treasury."

Furthermore, the authorities also reported suspended driving licenses for drivers who have not paid challans for over 3 months. This move was first proposed in April, wherein the vehicle owners are required to settle traffic e-challans within three months or face suspension of their driving license. Also, the drivers who have accumulated three challans for jumping a red signal or dangerous driving in one financial year could see their driving licences suspended for at least three months. Besides this, the rule also calls for the linking of vehicle insurance premiums with traffic e-challans. Due to this, if a driver has two or more pending challans from the previous financial year, they might have to pay higher amounts of vehicle insurance premiums.

Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede: Karnataka govt revokes suspension of former Bengaluru top cop, 3 other officers

The Karnataka government Monday revoked suspensions of former Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and three other officers who were suspended following the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede that claimed 11 lives on June 4. However, IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash remains suspended. Among the suspended officers, Vikash had approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) seeking relief from his suspension. The CAT granted Vikash's petition and revoked his suspension. The state government subsequently challenged the CAT order, which is currently being heard by the Karnataka High Court. Besides Dayananda, the government reinstated former deputy commissioner of police (Central) Shekhar H Tekkannavar, C Balakrishna (former assistant commissioner of police, Cubbon Park sub-division), and A K Girish (former police inspector, Cubbon Park police station). The suspensions were imposed immediately after the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where celebrations were held on June 4, following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory a day earlier. The government's suspension order cited 'substantial dereliction of duty' that caused 'misery, loss of precious life and embarrassment for the government.' The government had blamed the police for failing to implement adequate safety measures during the celebrations and for providing insufficient public information regarding necessary precautionary steps. In Monday's order, the government noted that following the stampede, it had ordered a magisterial inquiry and set up a one-man judicial commission under retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha. 'Since both the Judicial Commission and Magisterial Committee have completed their enquiry into the stampede incident and submitted their reports to the Government on 10.07.2025 and 11.07.2025, respectively. Further, the officers have also submitted representations read at ref (5) requesting to revoke their suspension. In view of the above, the order of suspension of the above-said officers has been reconsidered by the Government,' the government order reads.

Compensation can be enhanced even in insurer appeals if claimants seek: Karnataka high court

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ruled that the compensation in motor accident cases can be increased even when the appeal is filed by the insurer, provided the claimants orally seek such enhancement during arguments. The ruling came while hearing a case relating to the death of a 20-year-old pillion-rider in a 2013 road accident. "Such an interpretation is required to be made also keeping in mind the fact that the Motor Vehicles Act-1988 is a beneficial legislation," Justice CM Poonacha observed. The case pertained to a fatal crash on July 19, 2013, near Bengaluru city, in which Guruvanth, a telecaller, died while riding pillion on a motorcycle. The rider, Francis, sustained injuries. Both the victims' families filed separate compensation claimsโ€”Guruvanth's in Bengaluru and Francis' in Mandya. Tata AIG General Insurance Company Ltd was directed to pay both sums. The insurer challenged the awards, primarily on grounds that the truck driver involved in the accident held an invalid licence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Japanese AI invention allows you to speak 68 languages instantly. The idea? Genius. Enence 2.0 Undo During the hearings, however, the claimants sought higher compensation, which the insurer opposed, arguing that such enhancements were not permissible unless a formal cross-appeal was filed. Justice Poonacha rejected that position and noted that the driver's licence had expired on Aug 31, 2011 โ€” well before the date of the accident โ€” and was thus not valid. While holding the insurer liable to pay compensation, the court allowed the company to recover the amount from the vehicle's owner. Invoking the principle of "just compensation" under the Act, the court accepted the oral enhancement plea. It revised the notional income of the deceased from Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000 per month, using the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority's income chart as reference. The reworked compensation stood at Rs 13,50,900 for Guruvanth's family and Rs 4,26,600 for Francis, both with 7% annual interest from the date of the original petitions until payment.
