Jal Doot: Free clean water at bus shelters to combat heat
New Delhi: Delhi govt has started its
Jal Doot scheme
under which reverse osmosis (RO) water dispensers have been put up and volunteers stationed at bus stands to ensure access to clean water to combat the punishing summer heat.
The initiative was inaugurated by minister Pankaj Kumar Singh at the Nehru Place DTC Terminal. Currently, 12 shelters are working, and there are plans for expansion.
"These shelters will be equipped with ropes and other infrastructure to handle crowds and ensure smooth water distribution," Singh said. "More than 100 volunteers will be stationed to assist people. If the situation demands, we will expand this effort.
Delhi govt, along with the health department, is committed to protecting people from heat stroke and ensuring no one goes thirsty this summer," he said.
In the first phase, Jal Doot volunteers are being deployed at over 500 bus queue shelters, where they will provide cool and purified drinking water to commuters free of cost, the govt said in a statement.
Singh said: "Giving water to a thirsty person is the greatest religion.

It is said that water is life, and the heat in Delhi is not hidden from anyone. In such weather, the people most affected are those who work in the open all day or use public transport. At such a time, the availability of clean, chilled water by DTC is a very important and noble gesture."
The Jal Doot volunteers will provide water to people, inform them about measures to prevent a heatstroke, and offer first aid assistance if needed, Singh added.
As part of the
Delhi Heat Action Plan 2025
, DTC has displayed posters and distributed pamphlets on how to prevent heat-related ailments.
The Delhi Heat Action Plan 2025, announced last month, targets creating heatwave wards in hospitals, placing 3,000 water coolers across the city, an early warning system to alert people about heatwaves, and eco-friendly bus stop shelters with green roofs. Footpaths will also have shades to give pedestrians respite from the sun.

New York hit by Canada wildfire smoke, advisory issued over outdoor activities
Smoke from Canadian wildfires started making air quality worse in the eastern U.S. on Wednesday as several Midwestern states battled conditions deemed unhealthy by the federal government. The fires have forced thousands of Canadians to flee their homes and sent smoke as far as Europe. Parts of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York had areas of moderate air quality concern, and officials advised sensitive people to consider reducing outdoor activity. In the U.S., smoke lingered on the skylines of cities from Kansas City to Minneapolis, and a swath of the region had unhealthy air quality on Wednesday, according to an Environmental Protection Agency map. Iowa issued a statewide air quality alert through early Thursday, urging residents to limit certain outdoor activities and warning of possible health effects due to the thick smoke. Wisconsin officials made similar suggestions as the smoke drifted southeast across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, authorities advised people shut windows at night, avoid strenuous activity outside and watch for breathing issues. 7-month-old among 60 fresh Covid-positive patients in state
1 2 Kolkata: A seven-month-old baby was among the 60 fresh Covid-positive cases reported in Bengal on Wednesday. The infant, possibly the youngest to get the infection in the state during this current spike, is admitted to Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the child is doing well and does not need intensive care. Since the mother also had mild symptoms, her swab samples were tested and she tested positive as well. With the 60 fresh cases, the total active Covid load in the state has crossed 400. According to sources, the infant was symptomatic with a high-grade fever, sneezing, runny nose, and cough. As she was refusing any kind of feed, including breast milk, and had become increasingly irritable, the parents brought her to the hospital on Monday. "The infant showed noticeable symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. As she refused feed for over eight hours before being brought to the hospital, dehydration set in, and there was decreased urine output," said paediatrician Sanjukta De, who is treating the infant. The upper respiratory samples were sent for confirmation of the type of viral infection via the virus panel test, which can detect 15 odd viruses, including adeno, parainfluenza, RSV, and influenza. The hospital said that the parents of the child, who are residents of south Kolkata, do not have a travel history. However, during the history-taking process, it was noted that the domestic help had a high-grade fever a few days ago, after which the baby's mother developed a mild cough and fever. The child is now recovering with a nebuliser, IV fluid, and other supportive care. "In the past few days, I have come across a good number of children below one year of age with upper respiratory symptoms. But most parents did not want tests to be done. It is alright if the symptoms are mild and simple paracetamol works. But parents should avoid over-the-counter drugs in case the symptoms linger. Instead, they should consult doctors," added De. Doctors said even if Covid-19 largely spared younger children during the pandemic only with mild symptoms, they are seeing some children needing hospitalisation during this current uptick. In fact, there have been reports of at least three other cases of children requiring hospital care in the past two weeks, including a 15-year-old boy in Peerless, a nine-month-old child at Medical College Hospital (MCH), and a two-year-old child at Malda Medical College. While all three have been discharged from the hospital, sources in the health department said a child currently admitted at MCH has also tested positive for Covid-19. Sources in the health department said the child, however, has various health issues, and Covid was an incidental finding. The child is recovering well.
