Koppal: A formal complaint was lodged against SDPI secretary Arshad at the city police station on Tuesday, accusing him of making inflammatory remarks aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.This incident took place during a protest rally organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board's district committee in opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill on May 5.The rally began at the clock tower and moved towards Kurugodu studio where Arshad reportedly made incendiary comments regarding Modi, Amit Shah, the RSS, and pro-Hindutva groups. The complaint was filed by a BJP member who alleges that these remarks were designed to incite hostility and division among the communities.The complaint suggests that the protesters intentionally made provocative statements at the rally that were harmful to the central govt and public welfare, potentially inciting animosity among local Hindus and Sangh Parivar youth, threatening peace and order.

Dakshina Kannada crackdown: Keep politics out
Two back-to-back murders in Dakshina Kannada, each laced with communal undertones, have finally jolted the government to action. Police officers are now cracking down on lumpen elements across communities – a much-needed move to restore order. The government has rightly overhauled the police top brass in Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Udupi, signalling a firm resolve to address the escalating communal tensions. But even as law enforcement begins to act decisively, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje has chosen a troubling path. She has written to Justice N K Sudhindra Rao, chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, alleging police harassment of 'innocent' Hindu activists. A copy of the letter has also been marked to the National Human Rights fact finding committee on DK murders to submit interim report next complaint is both misplaced and misleading. As a constitutional authority, she should stand by the law, not those who flout it. The police have been doing their duty in a district teetering on the edge. Her letter, devoid of specifics, amounts to a blatant interference in the enforcement of law and order. Karandlaje's portrayal of police action as one-sided is factually incorrect. The list of anti-social elements who the police propose to extern from the district includes those from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Such interference from a union minister not only undermines the police action to restore peace but also sends dangerous signals that political patronage can shield anti-social elements from the due process of law. Telangana HC asks Centre to notify defence land zones by Dec
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court has directed the Union defence ministry to officially notify defence land zones in Hyderabad and Secunderabad by Dec 31, 2025, under the Works of Defence Act (WODA) of 1903. Justice T Vinod Kumar, who delivered the verdict, emphasised that public interest must prevail over private interests, especially in light of recent security incidents such as the Pahalgam attack. The judgment came while disposing of a batch of writ petitions filed by the Union of India, challenging the Telangana govt's 2016 amendment that removed the requirement for a no objection certificate (NOC) from defence authorities for construction near military zones. The court held that defence authorities do have powers to regulate construction near sensitive zones, but these powers must be exercised in line with WODA—by issuing formal notifications and adhering to due process. Until such notifications are issued, the court ordered that status quo be maintained on all construction near defence areas, including those with valid municipal permits. However, Justice Kumar adopted a stricter stance on unauthorised buildings—those constructed without any municipal approval—and directed GHMC and HMDA officials to initiate action under their respective laws. The court recognised that many builders had obtained permissions in good faith under the 2016 ministry of defence guidelines, which replaced the 2011 norms and reduced security zones from 100/500 metres to 10/100 metres, depending on the type of defence establishment. These guidelines classify establishments into part A (10-metre limit) and part B (100-metre limit). The judge affirmed that the 2016 norms, though issued as internal circulars, are the currently applicable standard, but emphasised that they do not have statutory force until notified under WODA. It also argued that it is not obligated to enforce central defence rules unless officially notified. The court agreed, stating that the onus lies on the Centre to notify restricted areas before seeking compliance from state authorities or the public. Deputy solicitor general Gadi Praveen Kumar informed the court that a request for notification under section 3 of WODA had already been sent to the defence ministry, which is expected to act soon. The court also restrained builders from undertaking new construction in disputed areas until the ministry issues formal notifications, but protected post-2016 constructions with valid approvals from coercive action in the interim.
