New Delhi:
'Put the interest of the nation first and shed your egos if you truly wish for India to become a global sporting powerhouse,' said Sports Minister
Mansukh Mandaviya
, delivering a forceful message to the country's national sports federations (NSFs).
His statement comes after recurrent instances where NSFs have engaged in factionalism, misgovernance, and financial impropriety, which in turn have led to ongoing court cases and the formation of ad-hoc committees.

At the 'Khelo Bharat Conclave' organised here on Thursday, Mandaviya met representatives of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), NSFs, corporates, and top sports administrators for a day-long brainstorming session.
The minister outlined India's medal strategy for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games — aiming for a finish among the top 10 nations in the world — and discussed the efforts needed to make the country a sporting force by 2047.
'Sport is a public movement. We can set goals and achieve them only if we all work together. We have to shed our egos, focus on comprehensive planning, and convert plans into substantial output,' Mandaviya said in his keynote address.

Mandaviya put the onus on the NSFs to take the lead and begin the process of good governance on a war footing. Among other topics, critical discussions were held on the upcoming 'National Sports Governance Bill', which will be tabled in the monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21. While athletes remain at the heart of the Khelo Bharat Niti (national sports policy), the government highlighted how federations, state governments, and corporate houses must play a major role in ensuring India finishes among the top 10 nations in the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics.
'We need to assess at once where we are and where we want to go. To begin with, I urge the NSFs to provide me with a five-year policy by August, and then we can develop a 10-year plan. With the Asian Games in 2026, we need a holistic approach because we not only want to win medals at the Olympics but also make sports a commercial property — where we can invite the world to come and play in India and boost sports tourism,' he said.
The discussions also revolved around producing quality coaches, grooming sports administrators, developing the sports goods business, and controlling the menace of doping.
'We are happy to provide all support to NSFs, but going forward, we will also start looking at performance-based grants. This will ensure that we are focused and serious with our planning and how we run the game,' he added. The ministry urged NSFs to prepare a proper calendar of events so that athletes do not suffer logistical issues.
Mandaviya informed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC), FIFA — football's global governing body — and international federations (IFs) were deeply consulted during the drafting stage of the governance bill to incorporate their suggestions and work on the objections raised.
The minister said he even held discussions with former sports minister and Congress leader Ajay Maken, who was instrumental in the passage of the National Sports Development Code of India in 2011.
'IOC was consulted as well, along with IFs. FIFA had a query, and I sent an officer to their headquarters to discuss it with them. The bill is now ready. I did a series of consultations with NSFs, athletes, coaches and also received 600 inputs from the public when the draft was put online for suggestions. I also had a three-hour meeting with sports lawyers to understand their perspective,' he said.

Rajya Sabha: Union Civil Aviation Minister speaks on media reports about Ahmedabad flight crash investigation during Question Hour

Responding to a question during Question Hour of the Rajya Sabha regarding the Ahmedabad Air India AI171 flight crash, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said. 'To have a definitive answer and definitive future correction measures, we have to look at the final report. I can say this House and to the people of this country, the AAIB has a very definitive, thorough, rules-based process. We have followed thoroughly, without any negligence, we have thoroughly followed all the corrective and suggestive measures from the ICAO international protocol,' he said. Also Read: Parliament Monsoon Session Day 1 LIVE updates on July 21, 2025 'They are very transparently looking into the process right now, and they are totally unbiased. The AAIB is totally unbiased and looking into the facts,' the Union Minister said. 'There can be many questions; I have seen multiple articles by not only Indian media but also western media trying to promote their own narrative, their own viewpoint, their own considerations, but I have to tell you that the way we are seeing the investigation is through the facts. We want to stand by the truth. Not what is happening with the pilots, or not what is happening with Boeing or not what is happening with Air India or any other stakeholder,' he added. 'We want to find out what exactly happened, and that is only going to come out once the final report has been placed. We have to respect the process of investigation, and once that process of investigation has happened, then we can talk about what happened and how it happened and then the corrective measures,' Mr. Naidu said. Union Minister Naidu further said that the government is not differentiating between the victims of the Ahmedabad flight crash. 'The compensation for passengers and others who were killed on the ground, or the students who were killed at the medical college near the accident site has been the same,' he added.

Madras HC restrains DMK from using OTP verification messages for their party's enrollment drive 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu'

MADURAI: Madras high court on Monday ordered an interim injunction to the limited extent of restraining DMK from using OTP verification messages for their party's enrollment drive 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', since the matter involves aspects of data protection and privacy which are to be examined by the court. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice A D Maria Clete observed that 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' is a door-to-door membership drive done by a recognised political party (DMK) in the state. Since personal data is being collected from the people, this public interest litigation raises serious concerns about the right to privacy and the infrastructure available for data protection. The judges observed that digital membership drive by political parties in a new area of study. The aspect of how the data is stored and processed is to be looked into to safeguard the right to privacy and right to political affiliation of the citizens. Several aspects as to whether consensus is obtained from the people for the enrollment drive, whether such a process of data collection from the public would put other smaller parties in a disadvantageous position should also be examined. Hence, the judges passed an interim order to a limited extent restraining DMK from using OTP verification messages for 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' enrollment drive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo The judges ordered notice and sought response from the Centre, state and DMK. The hearing in the case was adjourned by two weeks. The court passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by S Rajkumar, a resident of T Athikarai village in Sivaganga district. The petitioner said that the DMK party cadres and functionaries under the guise political campaign 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' are collecting the personal and Aadhaar details from the public in his locality. They also demanded personal details and identification documents including Aadhaar, voter identity cards from his family members, claiming it was required for the sanction of govt benefits. They threatened to stop the monthly monetary assistance received by the women in the family when they refused to give them the documents. The petitioner also claimed that DMK cadres are also collecting the mobile numbers of people and are sending them messages regarding 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign which. Many people are unaware of the implications of the messages and the OTP, he said, adding that the DMK party cadres were also threatening the people that govt schemes would be stopped if they fail to join the party. He said the unauthorised collection and processing of Aadhaar information by DMK constituted a violation of the fundamental right of citizens. The collection of Aadhaar details by private entities, including political parties, for purposes other than those explicitly permitted by law, constitutes a severe invasion of privacy, he said. The data collected by the DMK cadres from the public can be used to create detailed profiles of citizens, potentially influencing electoral outcomes through targeted messaging, micro-targeting, and manipulative propaganda. Hence, the petitioner sought a direction to restrain the DMK and its cadres from collecting Aadhaar details from the public for any purpose. The petitioner also sought a direction to the chief executive officer of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and secretary to the Union ministry of electronics and information technology to initiate a thorough investigation into the unauthorized collection of Aadhaar details by DMK.
