Australian debutant Mitchell Owen delivered a stunning all-round display in his first T20 International, guiding his team to a thrilling three-wicket win over the West Indies at Kingston Stadium, Jamaica, on Sunday.
The 23-year-old scored a rapid 50 and claimed a key wicket, helping Australia chase down the target with seven balls to spare.
Owen made an immediate impact with the ball, conceding just 14 runs and dismissing West Indies captain Shai Hope, who had earlier anchored the innings with a 55 off 39 deliveries.

Walking in to bat at No. 6 with Australia in trouble at 78 for 4 in the 9th over, Owen turned the game around with a blistering 80-run partnership off just 40 balls alongside Cameron Green.
Owen brought up his half-century in just 27 balls before falling to Alzarri Joseph, while Green smashed 51 off 26 before being dismissed by Gudakesh Motie.
Owen's debut performance etched his name into the record books:
He became the first player in T20I history to score a fifty and take a wicket on debut against a full-member nation, breaking a 16-year-old record held by South Africa's Rassie van der Dussen.
Poll
Do you think Mitchell Owen will become a key player for Australia in future matches?
Yes, definitely
Maybe, it depends
No, I don't think so
He joins Ireland's Simi Singh as only the second cricketer from a full-member side to achieve this double on debut.

Singh had scored 57 and taken three wickets against the Netherlands in 2018.
Owen is also just the second player to hit a half-century from No. 6 or lower on debut against a full-member nation, after England's Phil Salt, who scored 57 off 24 against the West Indies in 2022.
He now stands alongside Ricky Ponting and David Warner as only the third Australian to notch a fifty on T20I debut.
EXCLUSIVE: Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of England Test series
Owen's rise comes on the back of a stellar Big Bash League 2024-25 season, where he was instrumental in Hobart Hurricanes' title win — scoring 452 runs and taking six wickets across 11 matches, including a match-winning century in the final.
His talent also earned him a mid-season IPL contract with Punjab Kings as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, making one appearance during the 2025 season.
Overall, Owen becomes just the 20th player globally — including associate nations — to achieve the rare feat of scoring a fifty and taking a wicket in their T20I debut.
A dream debut — and perhaps the start of something big for Australian cricket.

IND vs ENG: Oval thriller goes to the wire! India hang by a thread as fifth Test heads into dramatic final day

India's Prasidh Krishna, center, celebrates the dismissal of England's Joe Root, right, on day four of the fifth cricket test match between England and India at The Kia Oval in London, Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) London: The centre square at the Oval wore a deserted look till 30 minutes before start of play on the fourth morning. Unlike the other days of this final Test of the series, there weren't players queuing up to go through their warmup drills. Yet, you could cut the tension all around with a knife. India were conserving their three strike bowlers — Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep, while England's Harry Brook and Joe Root took a few throwdowns and retired to the dressing room. These characters played lead roles in turning the arena into a bullring, throwing gruesome punches at each other before rain and bad light 75 minutes into the last session, took the series into its final dramatic fifth day. India will come back on Monday morning, four wickets away, with 34 runs in the bank, from finishing the series at 2-2. Brook batted like a man on steroids to score 111 off 98 while Root played the monk who had the entire field under his control as he hit 105 off 152 after they got together an hour into the first session with England, in pursuit of 374 on a tricky pitch, looking nervy at 106/3. Siraj, like Ben Stokes did in the third Test at Lord's, dug deep into his energy reserves and kept asking questions of Root's defence. That resulted in Krishna finding Root's outside edge to Dhruv Jurel to light up the match again under the dark grey London skies after Brook's hoick off Akash Deep applied the brakes on England's charge. In a spell of unchanged bowling after tea, Siraj and Krishna ensured India were still breathing following the damaging blows inflicted by Brook and Root. India will hope the duo has enough left in the tank to turn up one final time on Monday morning and prevent a 1-3 scoreline with Jamie Overton and Jamie Smith at the crease. After all, they were taking on two Yorkshiremen who were bullish about affirming that their 'Bazball' brand of cricket works. Root and Brook were advertising for the England team's 'we-will-chase-down-anything' philosophy. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna had Ben Duckett and stand-in captain Ollie Pope under their spell in the first hour of the day. They were all over England with the pitch offering exaggerated movement and some uneven bounce. Duckett edging Krishna to second slip and Pope falling to Siraj LBW seemed a matter of time. Brook wasn't having any of it; he turned up a bully. Poll Who do you think will win the final Test match? India England There are moments that define the course of a big game. Siraj stepping on to the long-leg boundary when Brook, batting on 19, had topedged a short ball from Krishna was clearly one. It was reminiscent of Trent Boult stepping onto the rope after catching Ben Stokes in the 2019 World Cup final. Monday morning will tell if India end up on the wrong side like New Zealand in 2019. It is true that Siraj was in a great rhythm deep into the morning session. He was still bowling at the peak of his powers even as it was his ninth innings of bowling extensive spells in the last two months. He was also fast exhausting his energy levels. He labored along with all his heart and passion. But his day out also highlighted that India were desperately short of another wicket-taking option. Akash Deep lacked the zip and Krishna battled hard to stay consistent with his line and length once Brook went on the rampage. India started and finished strong on Sunday. They will hope that the day's afternoon session doesn't cost them the series on Monday. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Christian Coleman Defends Sha'Carri Richardson After Alleged Assault: 'She Has Things...'

Christian Coleman has defended Sha'Carri Richardson after her arrest for allegedly assaulting him at Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Christian Coleman defended his partner Sha'Carri Richardson on Sunday, a week after the reigning women's 100m world champion was arrested for allegedly assaulting him at a US airport. Speaking after finishing sixth in the 200m at the US track championships in Eugene, Oregon, Coleman expressed his belief that Richardson should not have been detained following the incident at Seattle-Tacoma Airport last Sunday. Richardson spent a night in jail after being detained, with a police report later stating that she was caught on video repeatedly shoving Coleman forcefully. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round," Coleman said when asked about the incident by AFP. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean, people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, mercy, and love." Coleman, the 2019 world 100m champion, said the controversy had not affected his championships, where he failed to secure a top-three finish in both the 100m and 200m. He will still head to Tokyo as part of the US relay pool. Meanwhile, Richardson failed to qualify for the 200m earlier on Sunday. She declined to speak to reporters afterward, other than to wish the media a 'blessed day." Coleman is confident the 25-year-old Texan will bounce back for the rest of the season. 'It didn't affect me," Coleman said of last Sunday's incident. 'She's a human being and a great person, and I feel like we've been able to be really good teammates all year. We're just two dominant personalities. To me, she's the best female athlete in the world. She's just had a lot of things going on, a lot of emotions and forces going on inside of her that not only I can't understand, but nobody can. Because she's one-of-one. I know it's been a tough journey for her this year. 'But she's going to bounce back because she's the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day. She's going to be just fine. She's going to be good, and I'm going to be good too." With AFP Inputs view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Norris edges Piastri to win F1 Hungarian GP

Beijing, Aug. 4 (UNI)Lando Norris used a bold one-stop strategy to hold off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by just 0.7 seconds to win Sunday's Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris began the race at the Hungaroring from third on the grid, but dropped to fifth at the start after being squeezed by George Russell and Fernando Alonso, with surprise polesitter Charles Leclerc leading the field ahead of Piastri in second. Faced with losing more ground to Piastri in the Drivers' Championship standings, Norris pivoted from a planned two-stop strategy to just one stop on lap 31. That move proved decisive, as it saw him emerge at the head of the field once the other frontrunners on more conventional strategies had made their second stops. Piastri then swept around the outside of a fading Leclerc on Lap 51, and set about closing the nine-second gap to Norris, whose tyres were 14 laps older than the Australian's. Piastri got within DRS range of Norris with five laps to go, and attempted an inside move on Norris at Turn 1 on the penultimate lap, locking up his tyres and narrowly avoiding contact. Despite heavy pressure from his teammate, Norris kept his head to keep Piastri at bay on a circuit where overtaking is difficult, and ultimately saw out his fifth win of the season, and his third in the last four races. "I'm dead," Norris said afterwards. "It was tough. We weren't really planning on the one-stop at the beginning, but after the first lap it was kind of our only option to get back into [contention for victory]. "The final stint with Oscar catching I was pushing flat out. Rewarding for that and the perfect result today." Behind the dominant McLarens, Russell rounded out the podium for Mercedes some 20 seconds down the road, ahead of an unhappy Leclerc in fourth. The Ferrari driver had led the opening stages from pole position, and appeared to have the pace to keep Piastri at bay, but his race unraveled in the second half as balance issues slowed him significantly. Alonso took Aston Martin's best result of the season so far with fifth, while Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto scored his best ever finish with an impressive drive to sixth. Alonso's teammate Lance Stroll took seventh on a good day for Aston Martin, while Liam Lawson took his second consecutive eighth-place finish for Racing Bulls. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who looked off the pace all weekend, finished ninth after an investigation into an incident where he appeared to force Lewis Hamilton off the track yielded no penalty, while Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top ten for Mercedes.
