
Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 cross 200 million rides
'This upward trend reflects growing acceptance of the Metro as a preferred mode of transport in Mumbai's western suburbs,' MMRDA said in a release.
Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East-DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East-Gundavali) were introduced to provide reliable connectivity between the northern suburbs and key locations along the Western Express Highway and Link Road. Officials said the system is witnessing consistent monthly growth in ridership between 4 to 5 percent.
A senior MMRDA official said the network is helping improve public transport access across key suburban areas. 'The rising ridership shows that citizens are choosing the Metro for its speed and predictability. The network's expansion will further strengthen this trend.'
MMMOCL's operational teams are now focusing on improving service frequency, integrating digital ticketing, and enhancing last-mile connectivity. The goal is to make the system more accessible and responsive to commuter needs, the release said.

Fewer gates lead to longer queues at new terminal stn
Kolkata: The Blue Line's new terminal station, Shahid Khudiram, is facing trouble in dispersing passengers due to a shortage of automatic fare collection (AFC) gates. The staffers at the metro station are grappling with long queues caused by the limited number of out gates, resulting in significant congestion during peak hours. In total, Kavi Subhash had 18 AFC gates, including eight for platform access. In contrast, Shahid Khudiram features six gates — three for entry and the rest for exit. Since last Tuesday, Shahid Khudiram staffers have been converting Gate 1, previously designated for entry, into an additional exit gate to facilitate the dispersal of commuters. The Kavi Subhash station was indefinite shut on July 28 following the discovery of cracks on the supporting columns of its Dakshineswar-bound platform. Since then, services have been terminating at Shahid Khudiram. Designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 daily passengers, the smaller Shahid Khudiram station allows access from both sides of Garia Station Road. However, both entrances lead to a single access area within the station box, which has only six AFC gates for entry and exit. In comparison, Kavi Subhash's two main entrances were equipped with nine AFC gates each, supporting a daily footfall of 20,000 to 25,000 passengers. "Even with an additional exit gate (Gate 1), which was previously reserved for entry and is now being used for exit during rush hours, the serpentine queues don't seem to have reduced," said Bishambar Majhi, a daily commuter, questioning why the manual gates cannot be opened during crises. Allowing unregulated exits in the long term could enable travellers to cover longer distances on tickets of lesser value, potentially leading to significant revenue loss for Metro. 5 stations on Kochi Metro Phase II line to be ready by June next year
Kochi: First five stations on the upcoming Phase II line of Kochi Metro will be ready by June 30 next year. Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) managing director Loknath Behera said works on Phase II Pink Line connecting JLN Stadium with Kakkanad would be completed in two phases. Works on first five stations would be completed in the first phase and other five stations would be ready by Dec 2026. Behera said works on Phase II line are lagging by at least 100 days, mainly due to heavy rain and delay in shifting pipelines on the route. "We are confident that the contractor will complete the works as per target," he said, while addressing the media on Monday. Foundation stone for Phase II construction was laid in Sept 2022, and there are complaints that works are delayed mainly due to delay in approval by state govt for availing loan for Metro project. Earlier, KMRL announced that Phase II works would be completed by June 2026. Phase II line with 10 new stations is 11.2km. Stations are being built at Palarivattom Junction, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra and Infopark. Transport commissioner Nagaraju C inaugurated the new system at a function held at JLN Stadium Metro station on Monday. With the integration of UPI at TVMs, Metro travellers can now purchase tickets instantly by scanning a QR code and making a payment using any UPI-enabled mobile application. The new system is expected to gradually eliminate physical cash or card transactions, reduce waiting time at counters and ensure a smooth, contactless and secure payment process. It is especially beneficial during peak hours, as it helps decongest ticket counters. "Only a few Metro services in the country have integrated UPI with vending machines. Kochi Metro is proud to be one among them," said Behera.

CM Devendra Fadnavis pushes for housing development near Metro corridor terminals
Nagpur: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis , during review of 30 major infrastructure projects across the state on Monday, pushed for housing developments near terminals of Metro corridors to ensure optimal land use and enhance last-mile connectivity in urban planning. "Housing colonies must be developed alongside Metro endpoints to unlock the real value of transport infrastructure," Fadnavis said during a meeting held at the state secretariat. "We have the technology and resources. Projects should not take more than three years from start to finish," he said. The meeting, part of the ongoing series in the Chief Minister's War Room, was attended by top bureaucrats and district-level officers via videoconference. This was the third such session, after earlier reviews of 33 projects and over 135 actionable points. Progress on implementation of those decisions was also presented. The CM underlined the urgency of fund allocation and swift decision-making for time-bound execution. "Metro projects across Maharashtra must meet timelines.
