Rainbow flags and politics on display at Montreal pride parade

MONTREAL — Downtown Montreal was awash with rainbow flags as thousands of LGBTQ+ community members and their supporters took to the streets for the annual Pride parade. Cheering crowds lined the streets as activists, politicians and brightly costumed performers danced and cheered as the march stretched over more than two kilometres. Gregg Blachford, a member of LGBTQ seniors group Gay and Grey, says the event for him is all about good energy and fun for people of different ages. The mood was upbeat despite controversies in recent days that threatened to overshadow the event. The marchers included members of Jewish LGBTQ+ group Ga'ava, which was briefly banned from attending over comments its president made about pro-Palestinian groups. Organizer Fierté Montréal reversed the ban last week and reaffirmed that 'all communities' were welcome to participate in the events for the 11-day festival. ‘Weapons' Runs to Big $70M Global Opening in Debut Weekend

'Are you watching?' asks a creepy voice in the trailer for Weapons. And the answer to that question is a resounding 'yes.' Per Variety, Zach Cregger's sophomore outing earned $70 million worldwide. Domestically, its $42.5 million take was $10 million ahead of projections, and its overall take marks another win for New Line and parent company Warner Bros. Since Minecraft's release in April, the studio has been on a money making hot streak thanks to Final Destination Bloodlines, F1: The Movie, Sinners, and Superman. Like several of those movies, Weapons has had a lot of momentum behind it thanks to its intriguing trailers and glowing pre-release buzz. Audiences sure seem to agree, since it's got an 'A-' consensus on CinemaScore, which is rare for a horror movie. For the family-focused crowd—well, the other part of that crowd, since Weapons is about missing kids—Freakier Friday also did pretty well. Disney's legacy sequel starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis made $44.5 million worldwide, led largely by its domestic take of $29 million. This one has also been marketed pretty heavily in recent months, and has the added bonus of bringing back much of the 2003 film's cast and introducing new blood in Manny Jacinto, Sophia Hammons, and Julia Butters, the latter of whom get their bodies swapped with Lohan and Curtis. Meanwhile, older releases like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps continue to make some money. Analyst Luiz Fernando reports the Marvel Studios pic added $17.5 million to its international take in its third weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $434.2 million. Despite a 55.8% drop, it's now earned more than Thunderbolts ($382.4 million) and Captain America: Brave New World ($415.3 million), and will likely to reach $490-510 million when all is said and done. And Superman continues to hold strong with $578.8 million worldwide. After becoming the highest-grossing domestic Superman movie last week, it's poised to make (or exceed) $600 million worldwide before it hits streaming on August 26. Want more io9 news? Sharon Stone on the Moment Robert De Niro ‘Crossed a Line' Filming ‘Casino'

For Sharon Stone, the ultimate dream come true was working with Robert De Niro in 'Casino.' She told Business Insider that she auditioned for De Niro movies 'many times' before she was cast in the 1994 Martin Scorsese classic. Stone had even told an acting teacher years prior that her career goal was to 'work with De Niro and hold my own.' But when Stone finally realized what she called 'the apex,' De Niro ended up setting Stone off while shooting one of the movie's most electric verbal sparring sessions. The 'Basic Instinct' actress recalled, 'There's a scene in the movie where we're sitting across a table arguing, and he says to me, 'You're a good actress, you know that?' And I remember in that scene when he said it, how furious it made me because it was my dream to do it, and then he challenged me at the table. I remember thinking, 'Oh, you crossed a line today, mister.'' 'He knew every button to go for with me because he is the greatest observational actor. He can crawl under your skin and get in there,' Stone said. It all paid off for Stone, who landed a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her work in 'Casino.' Stone will next appear in Universal's 'Nobody 2,' the Bob Odenkirk-starring action sequel that adds not just Stone, but also Colin Hanks and John Ortiz to its roster. In discussing her role, described as the film's antagonist, she said she came close to turning it down. 'I just don't want to play a cookie-cutter villain, which is something that I really have a thing about,' she said. The hesitation comes after what she felt was typecasting after her turn as a sultry femme fatale in 'Basic Instinct.' 'But that was not cookie-cutter; it was a villain that touched upon the zeitgeist of the moment,' Stone said. 'That was why it was so specifically successful, and why it remains interesting to watch.' 'Basic Instinct,' too, has a follow-up (or a reboot? or a remake?) in development over at Amazon MGM Studios. In a statement to IndieWire, screenwriter Joe Eszterhas said, 'To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: The rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist. I call my writing partner the TWISTED LITTLE MAN and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is 'sky high up' to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.' Rumors suggest Stone might join for this new 'anti-woke' 'Basic Instinct,' as she did for its misbegotten 2006 sequel. Meanwhile, 'Nobody' will hit theaters August 15. Watch the trailer below.
