Bus falls 100 feet off road in Himchal' Mandi; eight killed, 21 injured
The accident took place at Tarangla near Maseran when the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus with 29 people including the driver and the conductor on board was on its way to Durgapur from Sarkaghat.
Five people were declared dead at the Civil Hospital Sarkaghat, two at the Government Medical College Nerchowk and one in AIIMS Bilaspur, police said.
As many as 17 injured people are under treatment at the Government Medical College Nerchowk, AIIMS Bilaspur and RKGMC Hamirpur while four are taking treatment in the Civil Hospital Sarkaghat, they added.
The accident was noticed by local residents who immediately informed the police.
Mandi SP Sakshi Verma said local police and ambulance teams promptly reached the site and carried out a rescue operation, navigating the steep terrain to evacuate victims.
The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, Verma, who was at the spot, said.
Some reports said that an injured woman passenger asked a person who helped her to bring her bag with Rs 1.5 lakh cash in it.
The helper searched for the bag and handed it over to the injured woman.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri who also holds the portfolio of transport department met the injured in AIIMS Bilapsur.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has expressed grief over the incident and directed the Mandi district administration to provide ex-gratia grant to the next of kin of the deceased and best of treatment to the injured.

Mohali: Residents of Mullanpur and Zirakpur faced prolonged power outages this week, with many housing societies going without electricity for up to 12–14 hours. The work was also delayed due to rain," he said, adding that the disruption was unrelated to the ongoing power workers' strike. "PSPCL has adequate manpower to address complaints promptly," he asserted. Zirakpur also experienced widespread outages. Many societies, including Jaipuria Greens and Maya Garden on VIP Road, remained without power from Monday into Tuesday for up to 14 hours. In Lohgarh, electricity went off at around 4:30 pm on Wednesday and was restored around 7 pm. Residents complained that such cuts have become routine in the township. "Power interruptions happen regularly here, and there's little long-term solution in sight," one resident remarked. While PSPCL officials maintain that the Mullanpur disruption was purely a technical snag, the recurring outages in both towns have left residents frustrated, especially during peak summer heat.

Kashi women craft 4.76L national flags for I-Day
1 2 Varanasi: As the nation gears up to celebrate Independence Day on Aug 15, Kashi, known for its spiritual heritage, has intensified preparations for celebration of the day on a grand scale. In a significant drive under the Uttar Pradesh govt's Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, more than 2,600 women from self-help groups (SHGs) are making over 4.76 lakh national flags to be delivered to houses ahead of Aug 15. The initiative, blending national service with women's empowerment, has engaged women from both rural and urban areas. Chief Development Officer Himanshu Nagpal said that around 2,000 women from over 400 SHGs associated with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) are making 2.25 lakh flags, earning an average of Rs 3,000-Rs4,000. In addition, 680 women from 68 SHGs linked to the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) are producing 2,51,500 flags. Radha of Ramdih village in Sevapuri block expressed pride in her contribution, saying, "When the tricolour waves on every house on Aug 15, it will carry the essence of our hard work and patriotism."
