Oilers-Penguins Trade Idea Swaps Defensemen With $166 Million in Combined Salaries
As Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson's name remains in offseason trade speculation, NHL analysts are starting to come up with trade destinations that could benefit all parties involved.
One of those could be the Edmonton Oilers, who are coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses and looking to bolster their defense.
TSN's Travis Yost floated the runners-up as a potential trade destination, laying out a framework that would involve Darnell Nurse heading to the Penguins.
'Why Edmonton?' Yost wrote. 'Adding more offensive firepower to this Western Conference juggernaut would seem silly at first blush, but there are two compelling reasons to consider it.
'One, the Oilers might be able to solve a contract issue of their own as part of a bigger trade. Two, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl still benefit from another playmaker on the ice, especially from the blueline.'
In Yost's eyes, Edmonton could address both its cap issues and its postseason struggles on the blue line in one swing if they complete a Darnell Nurse-Karlsson swap.
Karlsson, 35, still carries elite offensive upside, having averaged 70 points per 82 games across the last three seasons. He carries a cap hit of $11.5 million annually, but Pittsburgh could retain some salary in a potential trade.
Nurse, meanwhile, is younger (30) but is coming off a low-production season with just 33 points in 76 regular-season games. Making things worse, he carries an annual $9.25 million cap hit through June 2030.
Karlsson, who has two years left on his deal, holds a full no-move clause but could be willing to waive it under the right conditions.
'He's arrived in Pittsburgh as they're headed in the wrong direction,' NHL insider Chris Johnston said about Karlsson's mindset. 'I have to think he's going to get antsy at a certain point here.'

Cardinals listening to trade offers on All-Star closer
The St. Louis Cardinals could be gearing up towards a major sell-off at the trade deadline, including one of their key bullpen arms. With the Cardinals starting to slip further and further down the standings, the team could look to acquire assets in exchange for their top-tier closer. Helsley was an All-Star in 2022 and 2024. Up to this point, he has spent his entire seven-year career with the Cardinals. Now, it appears more likely than ever that the team will part with one of its mainstays in the back end of their bullpen for so long.

Steelers announce Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter, Maurkice Pouncey to join Hall of Honor
The Pittsburgh Steelers are honoring three core members of the organization this December. The team will induct quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Joey Porter into the Steelers Hall of Honor as part of the Class of 2025. Roethlisberger, who was under center for the Steelers from 2004 to 2021, spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise. The six-time Pro Bowler led Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls, in 2006 and 2009. Roethlisberger will be inducted alongside Pouncey, his longtime center from 2010 to 2020. Porter, who played for the Steelers from 1999-2006, played with Roethlisberger for the team's Super Bowl XL win. The inductees will be celebrated with an on-field ceremony on Dec. 15, as Pittsburgh hosts the Miami Dolphins for Monday Night Football. Longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who coached both Roethlisberger and Pouncey, congratulated the trio in a video posted to social media, calling them "a small and really special group." "I can't wait to have you guys back," Tomlin said. "Well deserved." Porter's son, Joey Porter Jr., also took to social media to congratulate his father. Porter Jr., a cornerback, was selected by the Steelers in the 2023 draft, and has spent the past three years with the team. "Shout out to my dad for being a part of this year's class. It was an honor and a privilege to watch you play throughout your career, and see you put on for Steeler Nation," Porter Jr. said. "Thank you for showing me what it means to be a Steeler." The Steelers Hall of Honor, which was established in 2017, has honored players, coaches and contributors every year. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter will join the 58 people who have already been inducted into the hall over the past eight years. In order to be recognized, former players must have been retired for at least three seasons and have to have played for the team for at least three seasons. (As a result, this is the first year that Roethlisberger could be honored.) Former coaches and contributors had to have made "significant contributions to the team and community." Three members of the Rooney family, who own the team, are in the Hall of Honor, including team founder Art Rooney Sr.
