The blobfish: 'World's ugliest animal' named fish of the year in New Zealand
The creature, which grows to about 12 inches (30cm) long, is known affectionately as Mr Blobby and is the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.
It has a bulbous head, and loose, flabby skin, and lives in the deep sea, mainly off the southeastern coast of mainland Australia, the Australian island of Tasmania, and New Zealand.
The blobfish topped the annual poll by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, an environmental non-profit group, winning almost 1,300 out of more than 5,500 votes.
The animal, which has a gelatinous, tadpole-like body, benefitted from a late surge in support to overtake the endangered orange roughy, another deep sea dweller, by nearly 300 votes.
In their natural habitat, on the seabed at depths of about 2,000ft to 4,000ft (600m-1,200m), blobfish resemble any other fish.
But when brought to the surface, where the water pressure isn't high enough to maintain their shape, blobfish morph into mushy creatures with an unfortunate appearance.
The trust's co-director, Kim Jones, described the competition as "a battle of two quirky deep sea critters, with the blobfish's unconventional beauty helping get voters over the line".
The winner's late run benefitted from the backing of two New Zealand radio hosts, Sarah Gandy and Paul Flynn, who encouraged their listeners to vote blobfish.
"We and the people of New Zealand had had enough of other fish getting all the headlines," the broadcasters said.
They said the animal "has been bullied his whole life and we thought, 'stuff this, it's time for the blobfish to have his moment in the sun,' and what a glorious moment it is!"
A spokesperson for the Environmental Law Initiative, which sponsored the orange roughy in the race, said it had "no bloblem" with the result, stressing that it's "still a win" for deep-sea ecosystems and can help raise awareness about the environmental impact of destructive bottom trawling.
The longfin eel, the whale shark and the great white shark were among the other fish in the top 10.

"The use of our younger versions within scenes, of flashbacks and memory; the celebration and complication of friendship; the exploration of trauma… I found that intoxicating." Peter Andre was forced to come to the rescue when his eight-year-old son Theo got trapped in a public toilet cubicle during a family holiday in Cyprus Peter Andre turned into a real-life superhero when he saved his son Theo from being trapped in a toilet cubicle. The Mysterious Girl singer, 52, who shares eight-year-old Theo with wife Emily, along with daughters Amelia and Arabella, was forced to spring into action during their family holiday in Cyprus. Peter also has a son, Junior, and a daughter, Princess, from his previous marriage to Katie Price, with whom he is currently at odds. The drama unfolded while the family were enjoying a visit to Camel Park in Mazotos. Young Theo found himself locked inside a public loo, prompting his dad to take swift action. It comes after Princess Andre says she's 'independent' from parents as she breaks silence after Katie Price row. In true heroic fashion, Peter clambered up the side of the toilet block and managed to squeeze through an open window at the back. He shared the entire incident on Instagram, narrating the situation whilst sporting a pair of flip-flops. In the video, he explained: "Right guys, we have a bit of a situation here because these are the toilets. This is the door, it's completely locked from the inside and the outside, and someone can't get out." He then showed Theo, whose face was blurred for privacy, stuck inside the toilet wearing a T-shirt and shorts. The youngster exclaimed: "It's boiling in here!". Thankfully, Peter was able to get inside the toilet facility and rescue Theo by passing him through the gap. He clearly found the humour in the situation, writing alongside the clip: "Saved the day and I'm still embarrassing." It comes after Peter took to social media to address comments made by his former wife, Katie. In a statement shared on his Instagram, he said: "For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood." Peter went on to add: "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months." Following Peter's post, a spokesperson for Katie told the Mirror: "Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation, this was in the past and she doesn't feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she's dealing with this the right way and it's now in her lawyers hands.
