Director of Childline in KwaZulu-Natal, Adeshni Naicker welcomed the sentencing of a KwaZulu-Natal mother who murdered her three year-old daughter in May 2022.
This week, the Durban High Court sentenced a 35-year-old woman to 20 years' direct imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and murder of her daughter.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the accused stated in court that she met a woman on social media who offered to foster the deceased for her, and she agreed.
Ramkisson-Kara said that the deceased went on to stay with the foster mother for three years. During this time, the accused married the father of her youngest child. This man, who resides in the United Kingdom (UK), then encouraged her to bring the deceased back to live with them so that they could be a family. The deceased was then brought back to her home.
Ramkisson-Kara said that the husband had to return to the UK because his South African VISA had expired. He left her alone with the three children (her older daughter, the deceased, and her youngest child).
'She said that she would often beat the two girls during her bouts of anger and throw things at them. On 31 May 2022, the accused had taken her youngest child, who suffers from glaucoma, to the clinic as he was unwell. Her children were aged nine, three and one year old at the time. When she returned from the clinic, she tried feeding her youngest child, but he refused to eat and started crying. She then prepared food for the deceased, but she too refused the food and started crying. The accused said that she got angry and frustrated and hit the deceased with a rolling pin all over her body as well as on her head,' Ramkisson-Kara said.

Ramkisson-Kara said that the children continued to cry, and the situation was worsened by the deceased soiling herself.
'The accused said that she was very angry and hit the deceased while she washed her. She eventually strangled the deceased,' said Ramkisson-Kara
Ramkisson-Kara said during sentencing, the court deviated from life imprisonment and sentenced her to 20 years' imprisonment.
Naicker said the sentencing is precedent-setting and definitely serves as a deterrent for would-be perpetrators.
'Our hearts go out to the siblings and loved ones, however a sentencing does give one a sense of peace knowing justice has been served,' Naicker said.

Police nab foreign national found with drugs worth R100 000
The Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad has made a breakthrough after arresting a foreign national found with drugs in Mokopane town. The 47-year-old suspect was found with crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately R100 000. The Flying Squad received a tip-off about suspicious drug-dealing activities going on in the area. A 26-year-old male suspect was also arrested at his residence in Danisani Sandsloot Village. He was found with 46 sachets of Crystal Meth and 13 sachets of Nyaope. In Masodi Village, police apprehended a 39-year-old female suspect who was found 5 sachets of Nyaope, 2 sachets of Crystal Meth and an undisclosed amount of cash. All three suspects were detained at Mahwelereng SAPS and are facing charges related to the Contravention of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act and Possession of Prohibited Drugs. They are expected to appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court on 9 June 2025. Prosecutors remain hopeful in Joshlin Smith case despite life sentences for kidnappers
Just over a week ago, Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno Van Rhyn were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Western Cape High Court for their roles in the abduction and trafficking of Joshlin, who was reported missing on February 19, 2024. State prosecutors in the high-profile kidnapping and trafficking case of six-year-old Joshlin Smith say they remain hopeful the child will still be found, despite the conviction and sentencing of the three individuals held responsible for her disappearance. Just over a week ago, Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno Van Rhyn were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Western Cape High Court for their roles in the abduction and trafficking of Joshlin, who was reported missing on February 19, 2024. The little girl has not been seen since that day, and her disappearance continues to haunt both investigators and the wider South African public. Prosecutors Advocate Zelda Swanepoel and Advocate Aradhana Heeramun led the state's case in the matter. Speaking to the media following the sentencing, both prosecutors described the outcome as bittersweet, saying justice had been served in part, but that the fight was far from over. 'We are still hopeful that something will break and we can solve this case by finding Joshlin,' said Heeramun. 'Every single lead is followed up. At no stage did we say this is a cold case. It is still a very active and live investigation.' SPCA intervenes after inhumane transport of SHEEP
SPCA inspectors, together with the City of Cape Town's Animal Control Unit Auxiliary Officers, intervened in two cases of cruelty involving the illegal transport of sheep on Sunday morning. In the first instance, a trailer was dangerously overloaded with seven sheep, their legs tightly bound, piled on top of one another. In the second instance, another trailer carried four sheep, also with legs bound – one with a severe, burst, and infected eye injury. The stench was reported to be overwhelming. Both trailers were in direct violation of the Animals Protection Act, and one driver – who was unlicensed, along with the trailer – was fined by Law Enforcement. The sheep were seized by the inspectors and are now in the safe care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. All of the animals were destined for religious slaughter, but cruelty is never justified, no matter the context. According to the SPCA, transporting animals must comply with the SANS 1488:2014 'Humane Transportation of Livestock by Road', which requires: No overloading of trailers Non-slip flooring to prevent injury Vehicles suitable for the species Proper railings and loading ramps No tethering of animals Separate transport for different species Horned and dehorned animals must be transported separately As per the SPCA, it has a legal and moral duty to act – and we will continue to do so. No animal deserves to suffer.
