O'Mahony to lead Barbarians in Cape Town

eNCA26-06-2025
CAPE TOWN - Ireland rugby legend Peter O'Mahony will captain the Barbarians against world champions South Africa in a non-cap exhibition match at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
The 35-year-old retired as a Test flanker after the 2025 Six Nations Championship having made 114 appearances and played his final match for Munster in the United Rugby Championship last month.
O'Mahony forms a vastly experienced back row with two former All Blacks, fellow flanker Sam Cane and number 8 Shannon Frizell, who both play in Japan.
In the matchday 23, there are 17 who have played at Test level, including another recent retiree, loosehead prop Cian Healy, who holds the Irish record with 137 international appearances.
It is the first time the Barbarians have played in South Africa. They won four, drew one and lost three of eight previous meetings. They last met in 2016, drawing 31-31 at Wembley Stadium.
The Cape Town game marks the start of the season for the Springboks, who will also play 13 Tests, starting with a match against Italy in Pretoria on July 5.

Springboks to take on Japan at Wembley in November

The Springboks will play against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London at the beginning of November to mark the start of the end of year programme. The Test will be the first rugby event to be held at the famous north London venue since 2016 when the Springboks and the Barbarians played out a thrilling 31-31 draw. The Boks are no strangers to rugby in London, where their matches are normally played at Twickenham. 'We are delighted to be starting our tour of the northern hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium,' said Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus. 'Especially ahead of a challenging Castle Lager Outgoing Tour which kicks off a week later with the first official Test of the November window against France in Paris. London, are you ready? The #Springboks are playing Japan at @wembleystadium in November - more here: 🇬🇧 #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 20, 2025 'The last time the Boks played at Wembley was in 2016 against the Barbarians, in a tense affair which went down to the wire in a 31-31 drawn match. The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby, which has been prevalent in our encounters before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019. 'We have had fantastic support from our fans in the UK for our fixtures in London over the past few years and I am sure the match will be no different, especially at one of the most famous sporting venues in the world.' Japan coach Eddie Jones, who won the RWC in 2007 as a technical adviser to the Springboks, is relishing the prospect of another clash with the world champions. 'The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport,' said Jones. 'Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player.' Wembley Stadium has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Before taking on the Japanese, the Boks will face Argentina in the final round of the Rugby Championship at Allianz Stadium (Twickenham) on October 4 where they are expecting strong support.

Bulls journeyman Boeta Chamberlain heads for England

The Bulls have confirmed that flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain will be departing Loftus Versfeld at the conclusion of the 2025 Currie Cup season to join English Premiership side Newcastle for their upcoming campaign. Chamberlain, 26, joined the Bulls last year following a successful stint with the Sharks, where he made 59 appearances and scored over 150 points. A versatile backline player capable of operating at fullback, Chamberlain quickly integrated into the Bulls setup, contributing with his tactical kicking game, composure under pressure, and attacking flair. A product of Paarl Boys' High and a former South Africa U20 representative, Chamberlain has proven himself across both hemispheres, having featured in the United Rugby Championship and EPCR competitions. His experience in northern conditions will serve him well as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in the Gallagher Premiership. Bulls head coach Phiwe Nomlomo paid tribute to Chamberlain's contribution. 'Boeta has been a valued member of our squad and brought great professionalism and energy to our environment. He's a player with a sharp rugby brain and a strong work ethic, and we wish him every success as he takes on this new opportunity abroad.' Chamberlain expressed his gratitude to the Bulls and excitement for what lies ahead. 'Playing for the Bulls has been a privilege. The culture, the fans, and the standard of rugby here have helped me grow immensely. I'm grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the next challenge with Newcastle. It's a new adventure, and I'm excited to test myself in a different environment.' The Bulls thanked Chamberlain for his service and wished him well as he continues his rugby journey in England.

Cape Town weather forecast to throw another curveball at Springboks

The Springboks will have spent Saturday night and Sunday undergoing plenty of introspection after suffering a shock defeat to the Wallabies at Ellis Park. It would be no surprise if Rassie Erasmus has also delivered a bit of an 'uitkak' session, but there is no time for the Springboks to feel sorry for themselves after being well and truly humbled. Now it's all about the manner in which they respond in Cape Town this Saturday, and what can't be overlooked is the weather forecast for the Mother City. The last time the Springboks played in Cape Town, they were also met with a wet weather affair against the Barbarians at the end of June, which did add to a rather scrappy performance at times. It looks like it could be a similar affair this Saturday, with persistent rain predicted for most of the day. According to the ever reliable WindGuru forecaster, the heaviest rainfall should be around mid morning (0.6mm/1hr), and by kick off there at least shouldn't be much more than a light drizzle. However, it does mean that the Springboks – and Wallabies – will need to be prepared for a slippery ball and conditions that are less conducive to the high-scoring, high ball-in-play affair we saw at Ellis Park. Rassie Erasmus and attack coach Tony Brown are fully aware that the Springboks have to find a better balance with their ball-in-hand evolution. 'Tony was 100% in agreement that we didn't employ the kick-to-ruck strategy enough. Tony was saying the whole time, 'boys, we're overplaying, we're overplaying,' Erasmus commented. 'It's not Tony's fault that we overplayed. It was more a case of the guys seeing opportunities.. but Australia's defensive system is such that you constantly feel something's on (to attack).'
