How a dowry death case in Pune has led to code for simple weddings in Maratha community
In the wake of Vaishnavi Hagawane's suicide, allegedly driven by demands of dowry by her marital family, members of the Maratha community converged at Ahilyanagar on Sunday to introspect and draw up a code of conduct to curb extravagant weddings, in the hope that such a societal pressure might help curb harassment of women.
The meeting was chaired by Haribhakt Parayan Badrinath Maharaj Tanpure, a kirtankar of the Warkari tradition who belongs to a family of preachers known to advocate social equality. Over time he has earned recognition and lakhs of followers, and is known as a socially conscious kirtankar of the Warkari tradition, thanks to his progressive ideology.
On May 19, after 23-year-old Vaishnavi was found dead at her marital home in Bavdhan, Pune, her father, Anil Kaspate, in an FIR filed at Bavdhan police station alleged that at her in-laws were pressuring them for a Toyota Fortuner, after the family had given them gifts in gold and silver. Vaishnavi's suicide created such a storm that her father-in-law, Rajendra Hagawane, an NCP leader, was expelled from the party, following which police arrested multiple members of the family, including Hagawane and Vaishnavi's husband, Shashank.
Both the Hagawanes and Kaspates are Marathas.
At the meeting in Ahilyanagar, participants condemned the dowry system and proposed an 11-point wedding code of conduct. Among the resolutions were: avoiding lavish weddings with no pre-wedding shoots, limiting the guest list to 100-200 people and using traditional musicians instead of DJs. Crucially, the community resolved to boycott weddings where pre-wedding photo or video shoots are displayed during ceremonies.
'Dowry must be avoided and the money should instead be kept as a fixed deposit in the girl's name,' the participants suggested. B Dhumal, an author and entrepreneur, who participated in the meeting, said: 'This incident has awakened the entire community. We deliberated over the issue and came up with suggestions. After compiling them, we have drawn up a code of conduct for weddings in the community.'
Others who participated in the meeting include NCP MLA Chetan Tupe, former mayors of Pune Ankush Kakde and Rajlaxmi Bhosale, former corporator Shrikant Shirole, and Maratha activist Rajendra Kondhare.
Shirole said, 'Middle class families often emulate the rich and get trapped in loans and thereby incur stress.' Bhosale added, 'Daughters-in-law must know that they will be supported by their families if they are harassed.'
Members of the committee have now decided to visit different localities to spread awareness, 'as the community needs to adopt change on its own,' said Tanpure.
But will the community follow a code that lacks legal backing? 'A large part of the community is not economically well off – for them this code will be convenient. As for the rich, if the poor decide not to support them, they will have to fall in line eventually,' said Dhumal.
Sakal Maratha Samaj convenor Chandrakant Gade Patil, also a participant of the meeting, added, 'It is possible to hold weddings on a small scale once social pressure builds. During COVID-19, many did it successfully.'
Marathas comprise over 30 per cent of the state's population. The community is also politically active with most public representatives including MLAs and MPs emerging from here. Over the past few years, the economically influential and politically connected community members have seen organising big fat weddings, attended by thousands.
Earlier, on May 26, prominent Maratha families and political leaders convened in Pune to express concern over the culture of extravagant weddings, especially when coupled with demands for dowry. Reflecting on the way forward, Pune Congress chief Arvind Shinde said, 'The community has resolved to socially boycott families who harass their daughters-in-law. No one will marry into such families.' It now remains to be seen if this momentum for reform will sustain.

5 held over assaulting toll plaza female staff in Greater Noida
Greater Noida: A 28-year-old man from Bulandshahr was arrested, and four others were detained after a CCTV footage surfaced online showing a woman employee at the Luharli toll plaza in Dadri, Greater Noida being manhandled, police said on Wednesday. Police identified the main suspect as Amit Mukhiya, a resident of Hirdeypur in Sikandrabad, Bulandshahr. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when nearly 150 people, claiming to be farmers, gathered at the Luharli toll plaza to protest the toll charges imposed on their commercial vehicles, such as trucks and dumpers, demanding exemption from it. 'They were demanding free passage for their vehicles, citing frequent use of the toll plaza in a single day,' said an official requesting anonymity. Police said during the protest the employee tried to manage the situation and requested them to let her work. During that moment, the suspect (Mukhiya) allegedly manhandled her. 'In the video, Mukhiya can be seen aggressively approaching the 21-year-old woman, grabbing her neck from behind and pushing her. He then forces toll plaza employees to stop collecting toll charges and allows several private vehicles to pass without payment,' the officer added. Following an emergency call to helpline number 112, a team from Dadri police station reached the spot and registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for voluntarily causing hurt, assault or use of criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation, and criminal intimidation against Mukhiya and his unidentified accomplices on the complaint of toll plaza manager Arjit Das Gupta. 'We arrested the prime suspect, Mukhiya, on Tuesday night and detained four others for creating a ruckus and obstructing toll plaza employees from performing their duties,' said additional deputy commissioner of police (Greater Noida) Sudhir Kumar, adding that the BNS section for assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty was added late night and further investigation is underway. On Wednesday, several people converged on Luharli toll plaza to press for their demands. However, a heavy police force was deployed to prevent any untoward incident. Two held for performing stunts near Sector 126 In a separate incident, Noida police arrested two men after a video showing them performing stunts in a Toyota Fortuner near Sector 126 in Noida went viral on social media, officers said. The video shows a white Fortuner being driven rashly on a Noida road. The occupants suddenly stop the vehicle in the middle of the road and start celebrating by spraying some liquid from bottles. Taking cognizance of the video, Noida police traced the vehicle with registration number of the SUV seen in the video. 'We have arrested Diwakar Sharma, 19, and Sanjay Kumar Singh, 20, both residents of Sector 46, for performing stunts on the road,' said Noida's additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Sumit Shukla. 'The SUV used in the stunt has also been seized, and a case has been registered against them for obstructing traffic and creating public nuisance at 126 police station,' he ADCP added.

Car loan fraud: STF Meerut busts huge racket, mastermind nabbed
The Meerut unit of UP Police Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday arrested the mastermind of an inter-district gang that had been fraudulently financing luxury cars using fake documents and Aadhaar-linked address manipulation. The gang would then sell these vehicles at a profit without repaying the loans, defrauding banks of crores of rupees. The arrested accused, identified as Anangpal Nagar, was apprehended near Krishna Public School on Kila Parikshitgarh Road on Wednesday. The STF recovered a Toyota Fortuner worth ₹40 lakh from his possession, which had been financed fraudulently. According to STF SP Brajesh Kumar Singh, the team had been receiving inputs about a syndicate active across various banks, taking car loans using fake residential addresses—often rented houses. The gang would manipulate Aadhaar card addresses to match loan paperwork, obtain vehicle loans, and then default on repayments while secretly selling the vehicles to unsuspecting buyers. During interrogation, Nagar confessed that he used to visit multiple banks along with his associates to finance high-end vehicles. After securing the loans, they would vacate the loan-registered addresses to avoid recovery agents or legal notices. A few months later, the financed vehicles would be sold off for profit. The investigation revealed that Anangpal had even gone to the extent of creating a fake Udyam (enterprise) registration in the name of a woman friend. The bogus firm, Preeti Dairy, was registered online, using the address Flat No 601, Ansal Town, Modipuram, Meerut. To maintain a good credit score and avoid suspicion, Anangpal and his associates used fraudulent documents to open multiple bank accounts, manipulating ITRs (Income Tax Returns) and routing money transfers between accounts to create the illusion of legitimate transactions. All these accounts were opened using fake addresses. Singh stated that further inquiries are being conducted to identify and apprehend other gang members involved in the scam. The operation has exposed a well-organised network of financial fraudsters targeting the vehicle finance sector through loopholes in documentation and verification systems. Authorities have advised banks to strengthen verification protocols, especially in cases involving high-value auto loans and newly registered businesses.

Fraud in agri dept: ACB records Anjali Damania's statement
MUMBAI: Social activist Anjali Damania on Wednesday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and submitted evidence regarding alleged fraud in the state agricultural department when it was headed by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde. The activist alleged a ₹161-crore fraud in the department between July 2023 and November 2024, when Munde was a minister in the previous Mahayuti government. 'We recorded her statement for around four hours,' said an ACB official. Damania alleged that despite a central government directive in 2016 to transfer money directly to farmers' bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), the agricultural department purchased equipment and fertilisers at inflated rates for distribution among farmers. BJP MLA Suresh Dhas had also alleged that Munde was involved in a ₹200-crore scam during his term as minister. The NCP leader has termed the allegations baseless and ridiculous. The ACB said that it is in the process of recording statements and evidence, after which it will start investigation.
