Woman dies by suicide; husband, in-laws arrested for dowry harassment

The arrested accused include the woman's husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and a relative. They were produced in court on Monday and remanded in police custody till August 16.
According to police inspector Rahul Khilare, in-charge of Ambegaon police station, 'The couple got married on May 2, 2024, but within days, her in-laws began pressuring her to bring ₹20 lakh from her parents to fund a business. When she couldn't fulfil the demand, they allegedly subjected her to harassment.'
The woman's father has filed a police complaint. The complaint states that the woman had earlier filed a dowry harassment complaint in Solapur against her in-laws under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 498. However, the case was withdrawn after both families sought to resolve the matter. The C-summary report in that case was filed just 11 days before her death.
Khilare said, 'We have arrested four persons, including the in-laws, and a relative in connection with the incident which took place at her in-laws' residence where she took the extreme step on August 9.'
The police have booked the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 108 (abetment), 85 (act caused by inducement), 115(2) (abetment of suicide), 352 (assault), 351(2)(3) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (dowry harassment).
Reacting to the incident, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar on X posted, 'While the tragic case of Vaishnavi Hagawane's death over dowry-related demands is still fresh, yet another deeply saddening incident has occurred. Every individual responsible must face the strictest possible punishment.'

SC restrains Assam Police from taking coercive action against Siddharth Varadarajan
The Supreme Court on Tuesday restrained Assam Police from taking any coercive action against senior journalist Siddharth Varadarajan in connection with an FIR lodged against him over an article on Operation Sindoor. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice on the PIL filed by the Foundation for Independent Journalism, which runs the web portal 'The Wire', challenging the constitutional validity of Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 152 of the BNS deals with the "act endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India". "Whoever, purposely or knowingly, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or by electronic communication or by use of financial means, or otherwise, excites or attempts to excite, secession or armed rebellion or subversive activities, or encourages feelings of separatist activities or endangers sovereignty or unity and integrity of India; or indulges in or commits any such act shall be punished with imprisonment for life or with imprisonment which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine," it reads. The top court asked the members of the foundation and Varadarajan to cooperate with the investigation into the matter. The bench tagged the matter with a similar pending plea in which notice was issued on August 8. The FIR against Varadarajan was registered after an article was published in 'The Wire' on Operation Sindoor, under which India targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in May in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

Man held for abducting, raping minor girl in UP's Muzaffarnagar
A man has been arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a 16-year-old girl in UP's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Tuesday. The minor's family, in their police complaint, have alleged that Naeem Ahmad (22) abducted the girl on Monday when she was alone at home. He took her to some other place where he raped her, they said. Muzaffarnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar said Ahmad was arrested the same evening and a case has been registered against him under sections of the BNS and the POCSO Act. The rape survivor has been sent for medical examination and a probe is underway, the police said.

Reacting to the remarks, BJP leader CR Kesavan posted on X: 'Vairamuthu Ramasamy is a disgusting repeat offender when it comes to insulting sacred Hindu deities and grossly abusing Hindu Dharma. Now Vairamuthu who ironically in his name has 'Rama' perversely misinterpreting the Kamba Ramayana has called Lord Rama mentally unstable.'
