A day after a 27-year-old woman died by suicide at her in-laws' residence in Ambegaon Budruk, Katraj, her husband and in-laws were arrested for physical, mental harassment and abetment to suicide on August 10. The couple got married on May 2, 2024, but within days, her in-laws began pressuring her to bring ₹ 20 lakh from her parents to fund a business. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The arrested accused include the woman's husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and a relative. They were produced in court on Monday and remanded in police custody till August 16. According to police inspector Rahul Khilare, in-charge of Ambegaon police station, 'The couple got married on May 2, 2024, but within days, her in-laws began pressuring her to bring ₹20 lakh from her parents to fund a business. When she couldn't fulfil the demand, they allegedly subjected her to harassment.' The woman's father has filed a police complaint. The complaint states that the woman had earlier filed a dowry harassment complaint in Solapur against her in-laws under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 498. However, the case was withdrawn after both families sought to resolve the matter. The C-summary report in that case was filed just 11 days before her death. Khilare said, 'We have arrested four persons, including the in-laws, and a relative in connection with the incident which took place at her in-laws' residence where she took the extreme step on August 9.' The police have booked the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 108 (abetment), 85 (act caused by inducement), 115(2) (abetment of suicide), 352 (assault), 351(2)(3) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (dowry harassment). Reacting to the incident, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar on X posted, 'While the tragic case of Vaishnavi Hagawane's death over dowry-related demands is still fresh, yet another deeply saddening incident has occurred. Every individual responsible must face the strictest possible punishment.' FIR against 16 for organising bullock cart race in village
Pune: The Bharati Vidyapeeth police have registered a case against 16 men for allegedly organising and participating in an illegal bullock cart race on Sunday afternoon at Gujar-Nimbalkarwadi village. According to senior inspector Rahul Khilare, the organisers had used social media to widely publicize the event, appealing people to turn up in large numbers. Acting on this information, a team from the Katraj police chowkey arrived at the scene around 2.25pm just as the race was beginning. Khilare said the personnel identified the organisers and ordered them to stop the race owing to the danger it posed to public safety. "However, they reportedly ignored the directives and continued the event in smaller groups," he said. The organisers had not taken any safety measures like deploying a veterinarian, an ambulance or installing barricades for controlling the crowd. "In addition, the participants subjected the bullocks to severe cruelty," he said, adding a case relating to endangering life or public safety and disobedience to an order promulgated by a public servant, among other charges of the Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, has been registered.

FIR against ex-PMC corporator, 30 others for protesting without police nod over bypass widening project
Pune: The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Friday booked former Pune Municipal Corporation corporator Vasant More and around 30 of his supporters on the charge of staging an agitation without permission at Katraj Chowk. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The protesters demanded that PMC expedite the Katraj-Kondhwa Bypass widening project. The project, which aims to increase the road's width to 84 metres to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce accidents, includes the construction of a flyover and underpass. Land acquisition has been a challenge, but the civic body is working on solutions, including using transferable development rights. Senior police inspector Rahul Khilare on Saturday said PMC officials visited the bypass to take a review of the progress and other issues between Khadi Machine Chowk and Katraj Chowk. "More and his supporters began an agitation between 12.10pm and 12.40pm and created hindrances when the civic officials were reviewing the project work on the bypass measuring 4.1 km. The agitators demanded that their suggestions be considered while executing the project because they were local residents. A police team dispersed them to prevent a law and order problem," Khilare said. The agitators raised slogans against MLC Yogesh Tilekar, who later held a meeting with civic officials at Khadi Machine Chowk to expedite the project work, Khilare said. When contacted, More said protesting on social issues is their constitutional right. "Police have registered a case because of political pressure. What is more shocking is that a couple of names that police have mentioned in the FIR were not even present at the protest site," More, a Shiv Sena (UBT) politician, said. Khilare said an FIR was registered against More and his supporters for launching an agitation without police permission and forming an unlawful assembly by breaching a prohibitory order issued by the Pune police under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act. "Notices will be served on the agitators captured on a video, directing them to cooperate with police in investigations because they were booked under bailable offences," the police officer added.

Woman (20) Dies After Being Hit by Tourist Cab
1 2 Pune: A 20-year-old woman died on the spot after being hit by a tourist cab near her residence at Gokulnagar in the Sukhsagarnagar area around 2.45 pm on Friday. Bharati Vidyapeeth police identified her as Shreya Yeole, who was walking on the footpath and was on her way home after her internship in a nearby clinic. "We have detained the cab driver," Inspector Rahul Khilare of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police told TOI. He said the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the cab soon after starting it. The vehicle jumped before hitting a tree and then hit the victim, who came between the car and another nearby tree. Khilare said that the police took the 48-year-old cab driver into custody. "A case of accidental death is being registered against him," Khilare said. The officer mentioned that Yeole completed her diploma in pharmacy and was doing an internship in a clinic at Sukhsagarnagar. Her timing was from 10 am to 2 pm every day. "On Friday afternoon, she was returning home from the clinic and was walking on the footpath. An out-of-control cab suddenly knocked her. Yeole died after she was stuck between a tree on the footpath and the cab," the officer said. Khilare stated that police investigations revealed that the cab was attached to the fleet of a tour operator. The person driving the car was the owner's friend. "He lost control of the cab immediately after starting it. The cab first hit a tree before knocking the woman. We are questioning the person, whether he knew driving and possessed a driving licence," Khilare said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
