Ahead of the Club World Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea on Sunday in the United States, the police are mobilizing 11,500 officers in the Greater Paris area to prevent possible riots.
According to police chief Laurent Nuñez, the officers are being deployed in view of the match and the Bastille Day holiday on Monday, when riots have regularly occurred in the past.

He told broadcasters BFMTV that around 2,000 fireworks have already been confiscated during 300 police operations in the run-up to the match, and around a dozen people have been arrested.
In Paris, police have banned the setting up of a fan zone and large live broadcasts of the final.
Gatherings of people on the Champs-Élysées avenue have also been banned, and Place de l'Étoile and Place de la Concorde will be completely closed to cars and pedestrians on the evening of the match.
This is also due to the preparations already made for the military parade on Monday morning for Bastille Day.
The robust police presence and the extensive, strict restrictions are mainly due to the riots and excesses following PSG's Champions League triumph in June.
There were 563 arrests nationwide, 491 of them in Paris, where properties were damaged and shops were looted.

Official: Real Madrid star promoted to first-team

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has this week seen his efforts from last season officially recognised by the club. The player in question? Raúl Asencio. Stopper Asencio is for his part of course fresh off a breakout campaign in Spain's capital. Amid a personnel crisis at the heart of Real Madrid's backline, the 22-year-old was afforded a sudden opportunity at senior level. And this is a chance which Asencio went on to take full advantage of, courtesy of a number of fine performances. Nevertheless, as recently as this past weekend, the Spaniard remained registered with Real's Castilla outfit. But as alluded to above, on Monday, Asencio's emergence has been aptly recognised by those behind the scenes at the Santiago Bernabéu. As showcased below, the defender has been officially promoted to Xabi Alonso's squad, registered as a first-team player on Real Madrid's website. Conor Laird – GSFN

Wiebes wins chaotic sprint in Tour de France Femmes

Lorena Wiebes has prevailed in a chaotic sprint to claim victory in the third stage of the Tour de France Femmes, edging fellow Dutch rider Marianne Vos who took the overall lead after a 163.5km ride from La Gacilly to Angers. Sprint specialist Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), who narrowly lost stage two to Mavi Garcia, made an explosive push for the finish as a crash 3.7 km from the finish temporarily took out several riders including 2023 champion Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez). Opening stage winner Vos (Visma–Lease a Bike) lost a photo-finish to Wiebes but thanks to the six-second pace bonus reclaimed the yellow jersey from Kim Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal), who led the general classification after Sunday's second stage but dropped to second with that six-second deficit. New Zealand's Ally Wollaston (FDJ-Suez) finished third. Wollaston's teammate Vollering, who recovered from the crash but had to be helped to the finish by teammates, is now sixth in the general classification, sitting 19 seconds behind Vos, still in contention assuming she has recovered from any injuries sustained in her fall. "It was very hectic... I think when we went right on to the river there was a big crash behind me. I hope everyone is well," Vos said. Sara Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) was the first Australian over the line on Monday, placed 77th with the bulk of the peloton given the same time as the winner, the crash having been inside the final 5km. Gigante is 19th overall, 45 seconds behind Vos. The stage, mostly on a flat terrain, began without Giro d'Italia winner Elisa Longo Borghini, who withdrew from the race due to a stomach infection. Four riders made an early attack to form the leading pack, with Alison Jackson (EF Education-Oatly) winning a mountain sprint to the top of Cote de La Richardiere. But others slowly caught up, with Lotte Kopecky expertly leading her teammate Wiebes to the front, setting up the final sprint just before the crash derailed a number of riders behind them leaving a group of just over 20 to contest the final sprint.. The Tour continues on Tuesday with stage four, a 130.7km ride from Saumur to Poitiers through another mostly-flat terrain.

Tottenham Hotspur Are Genuine Contenders For This Bayern Munich Midfielder: Good Choice For Frank?

In a recent post on X, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Tottenham Hotspur are genuine contenders for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha. It has been claimed that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring the Portuguese talent to North London this summer. Palhinha's Impressive Form In German Football The 30-year-old caught the eye at times for the Munich outfit in the previous campaign. However, he was sidelined for a lot of games for them due to injury. The Portuguese sensation took part in 25 matches for Bayern Munich last season in various competitions. Palhinha anchored the midfield with conviction as he made 20 tackles, 13 blocks and 4 interceptions in the Bundesliga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 92.4% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via Palhinha's current deal at Bayern Munich will expire in the summer of 2028. Thus, it would be difficult for Tottenham to land him on a cut-price deal this off-season. MUNICH, GERMANY – NOVEMBER 05: Joao Palhinha of FC Bayern München talks to the media during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 press conference at FC Bayern München Training Ground Säbener Strasse on November 05, 2024 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by) Is Palhinha A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank? Palhinha is a good tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn't mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball as well. Palhinha can even use his powerful 1.90m frame to dominate the oppostion in the air. However, the Portuguese sensation needs to add some goals and assists to his game. He is quite familiar with the Premier League from his time at Fulham and won't take much time to adjust to life at Tottenham. We can expect Palhinha to add more bite and steel to Thomas Frank's midfield department. He is good enough to compete for regular first-team football at the North London club next season. At 30, Palhinha has still got a few good seasons left in him to play at his best. Therefore, he would be a good choice for Spurs to consider in the short term. He has got the experience and skill set to be a real asset for Tottenham in the coming years. Hence, Frank should consider going all out to get Palhinha on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
