Lettuce stays fresh and crisp two weeks longer with 'easy' hack

Daily Mirror08-06-2025
Lettuce is a staple ingredient in the summer when more people will be making salads and burgers, but this leafy green is infamous for spoiling quickly just after being bought
Lettuce, a key component in summer salads and burgers, is notorious for spoiling quickly after purchase due to its high water content which can lead to bacterial or mould growth if not stored correctly.
Nicole Modic, cookbook author and founder of Kale Junkie, admits her purchased lettuce used to wilt within days before she stumbled upon a brilliant storage technique to prolong its freshness. "The best part is, this hack works with all types of lettuce, making it a versatile hack to keep in your back pocket."

How to make lettuce last two weeks longer
Start by chopping off the lettuce head's stem, as this area is prone to harbouring bacteria which can be a major contaminant for your greens, reports the Express.

Next, snugly wrap the leaves in a tea towel or paper towels, tuck them into a sandwich bag, and then store them in the refrigerator. This method tackles lettuce's tendency to produce surplus moisture, which invites unwanted bacteria and mould.
The towel serves not just to soak up additional dampness but also as a shield against bacteria - so your lettuce will preserve its freshness far longer than usual.
To maintain optimal freshness, remember to swap out the towel every few days - you'll be rewarded with crisp, fresh lettuce for up to two weeks more.
Not only does this hassle-free storage technique prolong the freshness of lettuce, but it applies to a variety of leafy greens including spinach, kale, bok choy and rocket, too.
Nicole shared her excitement about the trick: "Lucky for us, now we have this hack, which makes extending the life of your lettuce simple and easy (and, not to mention: also cost-effective and more sustainable!")

Bananas keep fresh for 'almost a month' when stored with one kitchen item

A food expert has shared a simple storage hack for prolonging the life of bananas, and it promises to keep them fresh and yellow for an impressive period of time Bananas are a delicious and nutritious snack that are easy to grab on the go, but they're notoriously known for rapidly ripening. ‌ Various methods can help extend the shelf life of the fruit, including wrapping the stems with cling film and foil. However, one food expert has revealed a distinctive storage trick that promises to keep bananas fresh for up to a remarkable 26 days. ‌ Amy Cross demonstrated the technique on her TikTok account @amycrosslegacy, showing precisely what to do in the clip, which has garnered more than 100 likes. It comes after a doctor's warning to people who drink even a 'single cup of tea'. ‌ Half a million free Cinnamon Social slices up for grabs in Ole & Steen's UK-wide giveaway The social media user sliced a banana into sections while keeping the peel on and placed them in a glass jar in the fridge. In a follow-up video, she then disclosed that astonishingly, the banana pieces remained fresh with vibrant yellow skins after 26 days, reports the Express. ‌ She said: "These are the bananas I purchased on March 13, and I cut this into thirds and put it into a jar, so they're 26 days old." Amy originally intended to see if she could maintain a cut banana fresh for longer hours, but she far surpassed that target by achieving weeks of freshness. "The whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I can get a cut bananas to last 12 hours, and it's been 26 days," she added. ‌ If you're not keen on chopping your bananas, store them in a cool, shaded spot. Bananas should be maintained at roughly 12 degrees, as they'll ripen quicker if they're too warm. Bananas thrive in a room with low light and no direct sunlight, so a toasty kitchen isn't the best place for them. If you're looking to store peeled bananas, the juice trick is your best bet. Once a banana has been sliced and exposed to air, it's prone to browning quickly. To prevent this, it's recommended to drizzle some lemon or pineapple juice over it, making it perfect for a fruit salad.

Store potatoes properly to stop them from sprouting by using one fruit

A lifestyle guru called @lifetips669 took to TikTok to share a series of fruit and veg hacks, with one in particular getting people talking for all the right reasons A lifestyle expert has revealed several crucial fruit and vegetable hacks - particularly one that stops your spuds from going sprooty. ‌ TikTok user @lifetips669 shared a video showcasing various clever tricks to maximise your grocery haul. They began, saying: "Vegetable vendors will never tell you these food storage tips". Explaining their potato preservation method, they said: "Potatoes bought in bulk go bad. Potatoes and apples are good friends. Storing them together prevents sprouting". ‌ The technique appears to have scientific backing, as pairing the two items reduces their ripening speed. It comes after Brits are told to never put one banned item in garden bins as you could face punishment. ‌ According to Tasting Table, apples release ethylene, a naturally occurring gas which "can slow down or halt potatoes' sprouting process". The site also suggests avoiding keeping potatoes in warm conditions, instead placing them somewhere "cool, dry and dark". Although, you shouldn't pop them in the fridge as chilly temperatures can "trigger the potato's starches to transform into sugars, which can become carcinogenic when cooked." However, be cautious as ethylene from apples can produce the reverse impact on other produce, particularly onions, melons, broccoli, and peaches. Their heightened ethylene sensitivity can accelerate ripening, making them go off more quickly, reports the Express. In another clever hack, @lifetips669 suggested popping prawns into an empty mineral water bottle, then filling it with tap water. "Tighten the cap and freeze it," they advised. "This way it stays fresh for a year". The TikTok user then proposed storing broccoli in water to "extend its freshness", and claimed that keeping onions in tights ensures they will "last a long time". More tips followed, with @lifetips669 suggesting applying tape to the top of tomatoes to extend their edible lifespan to two weeks, and placing two garlic cloves on a cut watermelon before sealing it with cling film to ward off bacteria. And just like spuds, @lifetips669 revealed that bananas bought in bulk "mould quicker". To tackle this, they suggested wrapping a bag around the stem so they'll "still be perfect" when you fancy eating them later on. One grateful TikTok user responded: "Wow I'm so encouraged and happy, thanks a lot for this info." Another echoed the sentiment, adding: "Wow additional knowledge. Thanks for sharing the tips".

Stop cleaning your home with key item as it's a fire risk and makes it dirtier

The hack has been shared by several social media cleaning influencers, but experts are warning people to avoid the advice as it could pose a fire risk to your home TikTok trends have crept into every aspect of daily life, with home cleaning methods being no exception, as ' Cleantok ' continues to amass millions of views. ‌ Whether it's the satisfying before-and-after transformations or the everyday household item swapping tricks, the video-sharing platform can become a bottomless rabbit hole many tumble into. ‌ However, there's one cleaning craze promising spotless skirting boards that has recently gained traction, encouraging people to do something that could actually leave their homes grubbier than before. ‌ "There's a popular cleaning hack going around TikTok where individuals use fabric conditioner on their skirting boards and surfaces around the home to clean and prevent dust from accumulating,' explains cleaning expert, Emily Barron, of Property Rescue. "But, this method isn't a foolproof approach. Not only will it fail to remove all dust, but it can also introduce a whole host of other and more serious issues into the home.", reports the Express. This supposed trick has been extensively shared and posted by numerous cleaning influencers on the platform, who claim it keeps your house smelling fresh whilst maintaining cleanliness and banishing dust. ‌ Yet, alongside Emily, Lynsey Crombie, the Queen of Clean, boasting more than 380,000 Instagram followers and regularly featuring on This Morning, has also raised red flags about avoiding this guidance. "NOT a wise Cleaning Tip," Lynsey warns in one of her videos, slamming the trend. She adds: "Fabric conditioner might seem like a quick fix for dusting, but here's why it's not your best bet - fabric conditioner may leave your home smelling amazing, but it can leave behind a thin layer of residue on surfaces, which attracts more dust over time. "Instead, opt for a damp microfiber cloth for a cleaner, longer-lasting shine!". ‌ This sentiment is echoed by product development scientist Olivia Young, from Astonish cleaning, who says: "We definitely wouldn't advise people to use fabric conditioner on their skirting boards as this will leave a thin coating that could cause dust to stick to them more." By following this trend, you're also potentially putting your home at risk of fire, as most fabric conditioners are highly flammable. Other natural solutions include spraying a mix of water with white vinegar or lemon juice, before wiping with a dry microfiber cloth. While the idea of a cleaning 'hack' or trick can be tempting, it's often best to follow the instructions on cleaning products as the manufacturer intended to avoid unnecessary risks.
