NASCAR Confirms Talks With New Automakers Following RAM Trucks Announcement

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Following the announcement of RAM Trucks' entry into NASCAR in 2026, John Probst, NASCAR's executive vice president and chief racing development officer, has confirmed that the sport is in discussions with three other manufacturers for a NASCAR entry in the future. RAM separated from Dodge in 2010, and before that, the brand had celebrated three manufacturer championships in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2001, 2003, and 2004. The team last raced in 2013. There has been no new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) in NASCAR since Toyota introduced the Tundra in 2004. Probst shared that, for an OEM, to participate in NASCAR was a "good investment" and revealed that Cup Series newcomers would be allowed to follow an 18-month schedule to prepare and develop their team and cars to race. A general view of the Ram announcement that its brand will return to NASCAR competition, scheduling a Craftsman Truck Series campaign beginning in 2026 on the midway prior to the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 08, 2025 in Brooklyn, Michigan. MoreOpening up on the ongoing discussion with other automakers during the announcement of RAM's NASCAR entry, Probst said: "I don't want to jinx ourselves, but I would say that we are very close with one other. Can't speak for them. Obviously, it's their decision to make. We would love for them to decide to come into NASCAR, and even with that, there's one or two others that we're a little bit earlier in the discussions, but also looking pretty positive. "But we all know that an OEM deciding to come into NASCAR, it's a big commitment for them. It's not something that they take lightly. It requires a lot of research and approval at the highest levels. We're confident right now. We like the position we're in, and think that we're a pretty good investment for an OEM." Could Honda be one of the automakers NASCAR has been in talks with? A report by Sports Business Journal, which anticipated the arrival of RAM Trucks, stated that "Honda is also said to be eyeing a potential entry into NASCAR, though the timing of that is less clear." The entry of RAM would likely encourage manufacturers to consider a NASCAR entry, and push forward those that are already in talks. RAM Trucks CEO Tim Kuniskis confirmed that his team will be all set to race next year at Daytona. He said: "We'll be on track in Daytona in eight months, and the way we're going to do it is unlike anyone else." Kuniskis hinted that RAM's ultimate goal was to race in the Cup Series. He added: "We're looking for a date to the prom right now. So how am I going to get to Cup? That's going to depend on how I get to Truck. So however we get to Truck is going to obviously weigh heavily on 'do I have a path to Cup?' Our intention is not to do a one-hit wonder and go to Truck and not to Cup. That's not our plan."

The Legend Returns: 2026 Ram 1500 Offers 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 eTorque Engine with Proven Performance and Capability

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Ram has opened orders for the return of the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 in the 2026 Ram 1500, a direct result of customer input 5.7-liter HEMI is rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft of torque, featuring eTorque hybrid technology Available for order now, Ram 1500 with HEMI V-8 arrives at dealerships this summer Today, Ram announces the return of the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8, beginning with the 2026 Ram 1500. Ordering for HEMI-equipped Ram 1500 trucks is now open. The first trucks with the V-8 powertrain arrive at dealerships this summer. "Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you. Ram screwed up when we dropped the HEMI — we own it and we fixed it," said Tim Kuniskis, CEO, Ram brand. "We're not just bringing back a legendary V-8 engine, we're igniting an assertive product plan and expanding the freedom of choice in powertrain for our customers." The Ram 1500 lineup shifted to six-cylinder engines for the 2025 model year. Consumer sentiment for the legendary engine created momentum to bring the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 back to the Ram 1500. "Ram will continue to offer the more powerful and more efficient Hurricane Straight Six Turbo, but we heard loud and clear from consumers: there is no replacement for the iconic HEMI V-8. At the end of each month, we count sales to customers, not to statisticians or ideologues. Data be damned — we raise our flag and let the HEMI ring free again!," added Kuniskis. Each HEMI-powered 2026 Ram 1500 includes a new fender-mounted Symbol of Protest badge created by the Ram design team. The badge outlines the Ram's head pushing forward, powered by a HEMI V-8 block. The HEMI will be available in 2026 model-year Ram 1500 Tradesman, Big Horn, Express, Warlock, Laramie, Rebel (late availability), Limited and Longhorn as part of the brand's aggressive product cadence covering the next 18 months. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 delivers 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque in a smooth, broad power band, enhanced with fuel-saving technologies that include variable camshaft timing and cylinder deactivation. The eTorque hybrid system is a class-exclusive, available V-8 hybrid. The system replaces the traditional engine-mounted alternator with a belt-driven motor generator unit. The motor generator unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to provide quick and seamless engine start/stop, torque addition to the engine crankshaft in certain driving situations and brake energy regeneration, which improves responsiveness and efficiency. The system enables up to 130 lb.-ft. of torque to be available on initial throttle tip-in. Performance-enhancing features include variable-valve timing, Fuel Saver Technology (cylinder deactivation) and an 850-watt electric cooling fan using Pulse Width Modulation to tailor the fan's energy draw to the cooling demand. Intelligent eTorque IntegrationThe eTorque hybrid system stores energy in a compact, 430-watt-hour lithium-ion battery, housed in a noise-insulated enclosure behind the rear seat. Air-cooled and internally vented, the system uses dual cooling fans to maintain optimal battery temperatures while remaining acoustically transparent to passengers. A 3-kilowatt DC-to-DC converter steps down the 48 volts to charge the truck's conventional 12-volt battery and power accessories. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 retains a traditional starter motor for cold-weather starts. eTorque's benefits extend beyond start/stop. It enhances shifts, improves fuel-saving cylinder deactivation and smooths transitions under acceleration and braking, helping reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The new engine option offers a towing capacity of up to 11,470 pounds and maximum payload capacity of 1,750 pounds. Freedom of Choice PowertrainThe 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 is value-packaged with a performance-tuned exhaust system and 33-gallon fuel tank. The HEMI is a no-charge upgrade for Limited and Longhorn models. Hemi power: Ram plans return to NASCAR in 2026 with Truck Series entry. Cup Series could be next

Ram will return to NASCAR next year in the Truck Series, a comeback the Stellantis-owned brand believes is the first step toward launching a stock car program in the top Cup Series. Ram, which left NASCAR after the 2012 season, will race in the third-tier Truck Series alongside rivals Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota. Ram becomes the first new manufacturer to enter NASCAR at the national level since 2007. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis made the NASCAR announcement Sunday before the Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Kuniskis has bold goals and ideas — he's vowed to make 25 product announcements over 18 months — and he said Ram will enter its trucks aggressively with the intention to be disruptive. 'The way we're going to do it is unlike anyone else,' Kuniskis said. 'The reason that we've been out of NASCAR for 12 years is a very tough (return on investment); it is a very tough business decision to make. But when we say we're back, when we say nothing stops Ram, when we bring the Hemi (engine) back, when we bring some of the other stuff that we haven't shown you, it makes perfect sense to be back in the space and back up.' Kuniskis said Ram will tap into NASCAR's estimated fan base of 20 million 'and turn it into 80 or 100 million.' 'We have a plan. We know how we're going to do it. We think we have a path to get to that. We think people are going to like the way we're doing it because it's going to be fun,' he said. 'Not ready to share all the details with you yet, but I told you that the experiential piece was going to be just a little bit of how we're doing it. It's going to get crazier from there.' Ram raced out of the starting gate by using the Cup race at Michigan, which is just 90 minutes away from automotive capital Detroit, to announce its return. Ram staged a demonstration of its truck on the frontstretch before the start of Sunday's race. Kuniskis anticipates having four to six trucks at Daytona for the opener next February. John Probst, NASCAR senior vice president and chief racing development officer, indicated Ram may not be the first announcement of a new manufacturer, with talks continuing with other brands. NASCAR last welcomed a manufacturer into the Truck Series in 2004 with Toyota. 'We're excited that they (Ram) have interest in the Cup Series,' Probst said of Stellantis. 'I don't want to jinx ourselves, but I would say we are very close with one other (manufacturer). Even with that, there's one or two others that we're a little bit earlier in the discussions. 'We all know that a (manufacturer) deciding to come into NASCAR, it's a big commitment for them. It's not something that they take lightly. It requires a lot of research and approval at the highest levels. We're confident right now. We like the position we're in and think that we're a pretty good investment for a (manufacturer).' Stellantis features 14 automotive brands, including Dodge and Chrysler. Dodge raced in NASCAR through the 2012 season and left the same month it celebrated the Cup title with Brad Keselowski and Penske Racing. 'We have cars in our company,' Kuniskis said. ___ AP auto racing:
