MEF Supports WFH For ASEAN Summit, Urges Careful Rollout

PUTRAJAYA, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) agrees with the government's move to allow employees in the public sector to work from home (WFH) during the ASEAN Summit but suggested that the implementation be thoroughly considered.
MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the measure is important to ensure that WFH does not negatively affect business productivity, especially for companies operating in areas involved in the high-profile event.
'MEF believes WFH can help ease traffic congestion during the event, but its implementation must be carefully planned. Cooperation between the government, employers, employees or unions is essential to ensure a balanced and effective approach.
'Before WFH is implemented, it is crucial to hold engagement sessions with stakeholders, particularly private businesses and local authorities, to ensure the initiative does not adversely affect productivity for those impacted during the ASEAN Summit,' he told Bernama.
Syed Hussain said, however, the WFH implementation in the private sector could face challenges as not all employers have efficient, flexible work management systems.
'If businesses cannot operate physically, small and medium enterprises such as restaurants, transportation and nearby services may suffer losses. Therefore, WFH implementation must align with each company's capacity and needs, including in terms of technology, data security and employee performance monitoring,' he said.
He also said that the government's move to allow WFH during the summit reflects a prudent approach, showing that the government continues to function normally while temporarily adjusting to support the success of the international event.
'If implemented well, this WFH initiative could serve as a stepping stone for a broader hybrid work policy in the public sector. It aligns with global trends that recognise work-life balance and the use of technology to improve public service efficiency,' he said.

US, China to hold trade talks in London on Monday (June 9)

WASHINGTON: (Bernama-QNA) United States (US) and Chinese officials will meet in London on Monday (June 9) to discuss trade matters, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday (June 5). In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer would represent the US in the meeting, Qatar news agency (QNA) reported. "I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, concerning the Trade Deal,' Trump wrote. The announcement came a day after Trump held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid ongoing trade tensions and disagreements over rare earth exports. Washington and Beijing signed a 90-day agreement on May 12 to begin removing some of the high tariffs imposed on each other since Trump took office in January. - Bernama-QNA

South Korea's Lee, Trump agree to pursue deal on tariffs in first phone call

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung speaks with US President Donald Trump by phone on June 6, 2025, local time. - Photo: South Korea's Office of the President SEOUL: (Bernama-Yonhap) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and United States (US) President Donald Trump have agreed to work towards a "mutually satisfactory' agreement on US tariffs, during their first phone conversation since Lee assumed office earlier this week. According to Yonhap news agency, the 20-minute call took place on Thursday (June 5) and was described by the presidential office as friendly and constructive. Trump congratulated Lee on his recent election victory. In response, Lee reaffirmed that the South Korea-US alliance remains the foundation of Seoul's foreign policy, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu Jung said in a written briefing. "The two leaders agreed to work toward swiftly reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement,' the office said, referring to ongoing negotiations on tariffs. To that end, they agreed to encourage tangible outcomes in working-level talks.' The call came just two days after Lee's inauguration, marking a return to high-level diplomacy following the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in April over his failed martial law attempt. Lee and Trump discussed a range of bilateral issues, including the July 8 deadline to resolve tariff negotiations. In April, the Trump administration imposed 25 per cent tariffs on South Korean goods but granted a three-month suspension to allow time for talks. The presidential office confirmed that Trump invited Lee to visit the US. Lee welcomed the idea and expressed hope for frequent consultations between the allies. Both sides agreed to arrange a face-to-face meeting at the earliest opportunity -- either on the sidelines of a multilateral forum or through an official bilateral visit -- for more in-depth discussions on strengthening the alliance. Potential venues being considered include the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada from June 15 to 17 and the NATO summit in the Netherlands from June 24 to 25. Lee's office described the call as "friendly and casual,' noting that it helped build rapport and trust between the two leaders while setting the stage for further dialogue on bilateral issues. - Bernama-Yonhap

MICSEA hails stamp duty exemption for pre-2025 employment contracts

Lai says the decision reflects the government's commitment to supporting businesses while ensuring regulatory compliance through proper enforcement. – Bernama photo KUCHING (June 7): The Malaysian Industrial, Commercial and Service Employers Association (MICSEA) has lauded the government's move to grant stamp duty exemptions for employment contracts signed before Jan 1, 2025. Its president YK Lai said the decision reflects the government's commitment to supporting businesses while ensuring regulatory compliance through proper enforcement. 'Recognising the high volume of employment contracts between employers and employees that were not stamped as required under the First Schedule of the Stamp Act 1949, the Ministry of Finance, under the leadership of the Madani Government, has decided to grant full stamp duty exemption and penalty waivers for employment contracts signed before Jan 1, under Subsection 80(1A) and Subsection 47A (2),' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that contracts signed between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2025, will still be subject to stamp duty, but late penalty charges will be waived provided the documents are stamped by Dec 31 this year. Meanwhile, Lai noted that for contracts signed from Jan 1, 2026, onwards under the new Self-Assessment System for Stamp Duty (STSDS), full stamp duty and applicable penalties will be enforced. He said the exemption and penalty waiver for pre-2025 contracts demonstrates the government's sincere commitment to fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring fair enforcement. As such, he urged all employers and human resource professionals to use this opportunity to review and update all employment contracts to ensure full compliance ahead of the 2026 STSDS implementation. lead MICSEA stamp duty exemptions
