'Puts the competition's credibility at risk': Two teams blocked from making NRL finals
A plan to give teams finishing 9th and 10th a crack at making the top-eight by taking on teams 8th and 7th respectively in a Wildcard Weekend was put to club bosses a number of years ago. Under the re-jigged format, teams in the top six would be warehoused for a week after the end of the regular season as the Wildcard Weekend played out.
The winner of the two wildcard games would then join the top six teams for week one of the finals. If the current NRL standings were to stay the same at the end of the 2025 regular season, a Wildcard Weekend would have the seventh-placed Sharks taking on the Sea Eagles (10th) and the eighth-placed Dolphins going up against the Roosters (ninth).

Graham Annesley had floated idea for 'Wildcard Weekend'
The idea behind giving two teams outside the eight the chance to make the finals was to reduce the number of "dead" games over the closing stages of the season. Stats showed, on average, there were 23 "dead" matches – where one or both teams could not make the finals – each season.
This impacted attendances, TV ratings and merchandise sales, costing clubs vital revenue. The NRL's head of elite football operation, Graham Annesley, told clubs at the time a Wildcard Weekend could help recoup some of those losses.
"You often hear clubs (outside the eight) say mathematically we can still make it, but mathematically means you have to win every game," he said previously. "If you've missed the eight for multiple years, trying to get members to re-sign for the following year can be difficult. So if this is a way of keeping that engagement and that involvement from everyone associated with the game it is at least worth considering."
Peter V'landys rejects idea for 'Wildcard Weekend'
The clubs did consider Annesley's proposal but ultimately rejected it. And it appears there is still little support for the concept after it was raised again over the weekend.
ARL chairman V'Landys told Yahoo Sport Australia: "It's not on the current agenda and I don't think it will be (in the near future)." One club CEO added: "There was a general feeling the season was long enough without adding another week to it.
"And it puts the competition's credibility at risk if you have a team that finished 9th or 10th going on to win the title, as unlikely as that might sound. An eight-team finals system in a competition with 17 sides is about right."
Proponents of the Wildcard Weekend could look to revive the idea when new franchises in Perth and PNG are added to the NRL over the next few years. The Perth Bears will enter the competition in 2027, while PNG will come in the year after.
How an NRL 'Wildcard Weekend' would work
Teams finishing in top six get the weekend off
7th v 10th - (Cronulla v Manly on current standings)
8th v 9th - (Dolphins v Roosters)
Losing teams eliminated, winning teams secure 7th and 8th spots in traditional finals format

ESPN, Fox team up for bundled streaming service in October
Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Disney's ESPN and Fox Corp. on Monday announced the two rivals are joining forces to offer a streaming service to consumers as a bundle for $39 per month. The two media giants announced the service but last week ESPN and Fox each announced separate all-in-one streaming apps. The services can be downloaded on devices, including cellphones and tablets, and can be accessed on smart TVs and gaming consoles. With viewership declining on TV, including cable, media companies have turned to streaming services as a way to boost viewership and revenue. CNBC reported that sports is a way to accomplish this. Last week, both companies announced their services -- ESPN's Direct to Consumer Unlimited Offering and Fox One -- will launch on Aug. 21 before the college football and NFL seasons. But the bundle won't be available until October. ESPN's separate service will cost $29.99 month and Fox's will be $19.99. Also, ESPN will offer a bundle with Disney's other streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu, for $35.99 per month. Besides events, both companies present sports news. The ESPN service will include live sports and programming from its TV networks, including ESPN2, the SEC Network, the ACC Network, as well as Disney-owned ABC. ESPN also reached an agreement last week with the NFL to acquire the NFL Network, including the Red Zone. And ESPN last week signed a deal with the WWW for U.S. rights in 2026 to its biggest wrestling events, including WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble and SummerSlam. In all, ESPN/ABC cover 47,000 live events each year, as well as studio shows and original programming. ESPN and ABC sports include Monday Night Football, college football and basketball, NHL, NBA, Major League Soccer, golf, tennis and motorsports. In addition, an enhanced app will integrate game statistics, betting information, fantasy sports, multi-view options and a "personalize SportsCenter For You," the company said. Fox's parent company offers Tubi and Fox Nation. Fox's sports networks include FS1, FS2 and the Big Ten Network. The company said Fox One won't have original content. Last week, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch and Disney CEO Bob Iger said during earnings calls that they were considering offering bundle services. Fox Sports' coverage includes NFL, college football and basketball, Major League Baseball, FIFA World Cup, Major League Soccer, motorsports, WNBA, LIV Golf and boxing. Three other media companies offer sports: Comcast's NBC, Warner Bros. Discovery's TNT and Paramount Skydance's CBS. NBC, which has the rights to the Olympics, has Peacock streaming, and CBS offers Paramount+, services that include sports. TNT doesn't have a specific app but its services can be bundles with other apps. On Monday, Paramount announced plans to televise UFC events starting next year.

Water polo players briefly leave the pool after shots fired near Under-20 World Cup game in Brazil
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian police said Monday there were no injuries after shots were fired near an Under-20 World Cup women's water polo game between China and Canada in the city of Salvador. China won 12-8 on Sunday — the opening day of the tournament — but footage showed the game being briefly interrupted as players got out of the pool, laid down and took cover by a small barrier after hearing gunshots outside the water polo venue in the Pituba neighborhood. China led Canada 3-2 at the time. 'The match stopped for about a minute. Our team saw that the police was taking care of it,' Marco Antônio Lemos, head of the Bahia state water sports federation, said in a statement. Police said the cause of the shots was a confrontation with an alleged local thief who was outside the venue and tried to escape. No more details were given. Spectators were told about the incident after the game had resumed. Brazil is hosting the 16-team tournament for the first time. ___ AP sports:
