Telehealth has gone through a major boom-and-bust cycle. One promising stock emerging from the bust is Hims & Hers (NYSE: HIMS). Through nifty marketing and an insurance-circumventing subscription model that delivers medicine directly to your front door, the company is taking a lot of share in the telehealth market. The stock has traded up 449% since going public, and it is up a staggering 158% in the past year.
Disruptive innovation helped bring shareholders of Hims & Hers stock major gains. But does that make the stock a buy today?
People in the United States get frustrated dealing with health insurance -- as you may know from personal experience. Hims & Hers aims to slowly disrupt the market with an innovative approach that bypasses insurers. It helps customers easily get generic medications that help deal with sexual health, hair loss, mental health, and other common concerns, by having prescriptions and shipments sent straight to their doors through monthly subscriptions.
This model has helped Hims & Hers dominate the telehealth prescription market and reach $1.78 billion in trailing-12-month revenue. It's now trying to further expand its offerings by adding the branded weight loss drug Wegovy to its marketplace through a partnership with Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO). Previously, Hims & Hers sold weight loss drugs under an exemption because of supply shortages for the products, but with those shortages now resolved, it has to work with patent holders such as Novo Nordisk. Along with weight loss, it's also aiming to get into testosterone and menopause-related prescriptions.
Today, Hims & Hers has 2.4 million active customers. Management believes there are over 100 million people who could utilize one of its products, giving the company a huge runway to grow. A key factor will be the new partnership for marketing Wegovy, which is an expensive subscription at an introductory discount offer of $549 a month. Usage of such drugs is growing like a weed, and could be a new growth avenue for Hims & Hers to pursue.
Another huge step for Hims & Hers is international expansion. While countries vary in their approaches to healthcare and insurance, most people want easy-to-use products, affordable prices, and convenient at-home shipping regardless of where they live. Management hopes to supercharge international growth with its proposed buyout of competitor Zava in Europe.
Zava serves the western European market with 1.3 million active customers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Ireland. The combined company can utilize Hims & Hers' marketing expertise, increasing scale, and partnerships to bring this sought-after model to Europe. Global disruption of the healthcare space will give Hims & Hers an even larger runway for growth, while also allowing it to invest in new innovations -- including at-home patient testing and its own compounding manufacturing facility.
Hims & Hers has grand ambitions to disrupt healthcare with its direct-to-consumer model, and Zava will give it even more scale to keep accelerating growth. It will be exciting to see what the combined company can do over the next decade.
You can feel the excitement with Hims & Hers and its explosive revenue growth. Sales grew 111% year over year last quarter, and are expected to hit at least $2.3 billion in 2025. (They were just $100 million in 2020.) The company has a goal of reaching $6.5 billion in sales by 2030, which would make it one of the fastest-growing companies in the world this decade.
This fast growth has created some high expectations for Hims & Hers stock. It now has a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 79, which is a high trailing earnings multiple even for a fast-growing company. However, revenue is growing so quickly and with such high margins that the company may grow into this high valuation by the end of the decade.
As noted, management has a goal of $6.5 billion in revenue in 2030. With 20% bottom-line profit margins -- easily doable with 77% gross profit margin over the last 12 months -- that would equate to roughly $1.3 billion in annual earnings in 2030. Today, the market cap is $12.3 billion, which would mean a P/E of just around 9.5 by 2030 if the market cap did not change (which is an unlikely scenario, but demonstrates that there is potential for the valuation to drop). Even with some shareholder dilution that raises the number of shares outstanding, the stock would be trading at a P/E of around 10 to 12 at the current share price (which is also likely to change).
If you believe this rapid growth will continue over the long term, Hims & Hers stock will grow into its valuation. If you have any doubts about this pace of growth, shares should be considered overvalued at the moment.

Consistent strength training is the key to building muscle. While you may see some people gain muscle quickly all over social media, it's important to remember that building muscle is a marathon, not a sprint. Having a good routine and giving yourself a realistic timeline will yield the best results. Muscle growth -- specifically optimal muscle protein synthesis -- depends on several key factors. Your diet and genetics both have a role to play. And sleep, a factor that many ignore, also plays a bigger part than you may realize. Read on to break down how muscle growth works -- and how long it can really take. How muscle growth happens Each muscle is made up of muscle fibers, which are cylindrical cells. Weight training breaks them down and recovery helps them grow. Roger Harris/ScienceBuilding muscle involves the repair of microtraumas in your muscle fibers. Here's a breakdown of this extremely complex process: 1. Each muscle is made up of thousands of tiny muscle fibers. 2. When you lift weights (or do body weight exercises), your muscles endure tiny injuries throughout their fibers. 3. Then, when you rest your muscles, your body begins repairing your damaged muscle cells. 4. The repair process involves fusing torn muscle fibers back together, as well as laying down new proteins within each muscle cell. 5. Your muscles become bigger and stronger as a result of the repair process. Keep in mind that the above is a tremendously simplified version of what actually happens in your body after a weight training workout. In reality, the process includes more than just your muscles -- your nervous system, circulatory system and endocrine system all contribute to muscle repair and growth. How long does it take to see muscle growth? Building muscle is super hard. If it was easy, we'd all be no one muscle-building timeline, because several factors affect your ability to build muscle mass, including: Your protein intake: While all macronutrients have their roles, protein is king when it comes to building muscle. Your muscles need adequate protein to repair themselves after the stress of weight training. Without enough protein, muscle growth stagnates. Your calorie intake: If you don't eat enough calories on a daily basis, you won't build muscle even if you eat a lot of protein. To build muscle, your body must create new tissue, and it can't create something from nothing. Extra fuel from extra calories expedites muscle recovery and growth. This is one reason many people never reach their muscle growth goals -- they aren't willing to deal with the extra body fat that comes along with a muscle-building phase. Your sleep schedule: Lifting weights while sleep-deprived isn't a smart strategy. You might see some gains, but you definitely can't optimize muscle growth when you don't give your body a fighting chance to recover. Your lifting routine: If you're trying to build muscle, you should know about two key strength training concepts: frequency and volume. Frequency refers to how often you train a muscle or muscle group, while volume refers to the total load you stress a muscle with. For example, if you perform three sets of 10 reps on squats using 100 pounds, your total volume is 3,000 pounds. More volume and higher frequency typically equate to more muscle, unless you reach the point of overtraining. Your training age: The more advanced you are, the less muscle growth you'll see (yeah, that sounds backward). Everyone has a maximum genetic potential for muscle growth, and the closer you get to yours, the harder it gets to build more muscle. Your actual age: Like a lot of things, building muscle gets harder as you get older. Sarcopenia, or loss of muscle mass and function, is actually a big problem in older adults. That's one reason why it's so important to stay active as you get older. Other major factors include your genetic potential for building muscle (which is impossible to quantify without lab testing, and even then, kind of wishy-washy) and your testosterone levels -- which is why men typically have more muscle than women. Other hormones, including human growth hormone and insulin growth factor, also play a role in muscle growth. All that said, the muscle-building process starts the moment you challenge your muscles to do something. True beginners might see muscle growth within six weeks of starting a resistance training program, and advanced lifters may see results within six to eight weeks of switching up their usual strength training regimen. Regardless of fitness level, building muscle takes several weeks, even when your diet, sleep and training regimen are all dialed in to optimize muscle growth. Can you build muscle doing cardio? Cardio that involves high-volume weight training can help you build depends on your definition of cardio and your training age. Most people won't build much muscle from traditional cardio, such as walking or jogging, and people who've been training for a long time definitely won't build new muscle through traditional cardio. It doesn't recruit your muscles in a way that sends a muscle-building signal to your body. However, cardio that involves high-intensity exercises like plyometrics (think jump squats) or high-volume weight training can help you build muscle to an extent. Sprinting hills, hiking, skiing and other outdoor cardio can also contribute a small amount to muscle mass, especially for beginners. People with a long training history may not see as much success with cardio. Although cardio can improve your overall fitness and help build muscle in select scenarios, strength training remains the best way to build muscle mass. Muscle growth FAQs How long does it take to build muscle? There isn't a fixed timeline for how long it'll take to build muscle. It can take several weeks to several months. Beginners will see results earlier than intermediate or advanced people. However, the main crux is to find and follow the right combination of resistance training, eating habits and rest. These will help your body achieve muscle protein synthesis -- the process that builds muscle -- and result in muscle growth. How long does it take to have visible abs? Like any other muscle group, training your abs will help them grow and become visible, but there is also an added variable of body fat. An expert we consulted mentioned a typical person will need to have 15% body fat (or less) for abs to be visible. However, this number can change based on your genetics. Do your muscles grow on rest days? Yes, muscles grow on rest days. Our muscles don't grow while exercising because working out results in small muscle tears. Rest days allow your muscles to repair and build back up from exertion. If you don't take adequate rest days, your muscles will break down and throw off your progress. Focusing on proper nutrition and getting enough sleep is essential during your rest days.

3 New Studies Remind Us Eating Well Is About More Than Just Weight
Healthy foods may matter more than weight alone. getty If you've ever made a genuine, perhaps painstaking, effort to eat healthier, only to find that your weight doesn't budge, it's easy to feel like you're failing. Or like your body isn't behaving like it should. But a few new studies remind us that this isn't always true. New research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology by a team at Ben-Gurion and Harvard Universities followed more than 700 adults with abdominal obesity who committed to different types of healthy eating—low-fat, low-carb, Mediterranean, and green-Mediterranean—for up to two years. Nearly a third of them didn't lose weight, and some even gained weight. But their health improved in meaningful ways. Perhaps not surprisingly, the people who did lose weight saw the most change in their heart and metabolic stats: each kilogram lost was linked to a 1.44% increase in HDL cholesterol (the good kind), a 1.37% reduction in triglycerides (blood fats), a 2.46% drop in insulin, a 2.79% drop in leptin (the hormone signaling hunger), as well as reductions in blood pressure, liver fat, and liver enzymes. But the good news for some of us with more stubborn scales was that in those whose weight didn't change (who tended to be older adults and women), the researchers also measured higher HDL cholesterol, lower levels of leptin, and a reduction in visceral fat (the type that surrounds organs and increases disease risk). These are not meaningless changes—they can reduce long-term risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Also revealing was when the team looked into the biology behind these patterns, they identified 12 DNA methylation sites that predicted long-term weight loss outcomes. These sites may help explain why two people can follow the same diet with different results. 'We have been conditioned to equate weight loss with health, and weight loss-resistant individuals are often labeled as failures,' said lead author and Harvard Chan School postdoctoral researcher Anat Yaskolka Meir in a statement. 'Our findings reframe how we define clinical success. People who do not lose weight can improve their metabolism and reduce their long-term risk for disease. That's a message of hope, not failure.' This idea—that health and weight loss are not synonymous—echoes across two other new studies, too. (Note that these two were presented at the American Society for Nutrition conference last week, and not yet published in peer-review journals.) In a massive analysis of nearly 200,000 people over several decades, researchers found that the quality of food mattered more than whether someone followed a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet. Neither diet was better than the other: Low-carb and low-fat diets both lowered the risk of developing heart disease by about 15% compared to lower quality foods. The difference came from just that—the quality of foods. Eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts rather than potatoes, refined grains, and saturated fats and proteins from animal-based foods. In other words, whether your diet has more fat or fewer carbs may be less important than whether you're eating real food vs. processed foods. A third study focused simply on…beans. Researchers found that a daily serving of black beans or chickpeas significantly lowered cholesterol and inflammation in people with pre-diabetes over just 12 weeks. While this one only looked at people with pre-diabetes, lots of other research before it has shown health benefits of eating beans for people without pre-diabetes. The new studies should bring some hope to those of us who were raised to treat diet success like a numbers game, with weight the only outcome that matters. The reality is that in many cases, the body is doing far more behind the scenes than we know.
