Higher compensation for protesting farmers likely, says industries minister Patil
The land acquisition process has sparked vociferous opposition, with prominent voices such as actor Prakash Raj publicly backing protesting farmers in Devanahalli. Patil told reporters that a key meeting scheduled for Tuesday with chief minister Siddaramaiah will determine the govt's final decision on the matter.
"In a democracy, farmers have the right to protest land acquisition," Patil said. "But the govt will also try and take everyone along.
The CM will take a final decision on Tuesday. We expect him to announce a higher compensation or share in developed land for every acre of land acquired," added Patil, suggesting the govt remains committed to moving forward with the project.

A group of farmers Saturday had met Siddaramaiah and urged him to raise compensation to Rs 3.5 crore per acre besides jobs for children of farmers who give up land.
Patil also took aim at certain activists and intellectuals who have supported farmers' protests, revealing that "one" of them had previously approached the govt seeking help with land conversion for 400 acres of own land.
"A person who does not have land or stakes in the protest, is not an important person; it is the farmer who owns the land who is important," Patil said. "We will not force anyone. I know the facts of the case and those who are protesting the acquisition. We will discuss the entire thing once again on Tuesday and the CM will announce his final decision."

Madhya Pradesh Priest Faces Social Boycott After Opposing Shifting Of Idol
Bhopal: In a disturbing incident from Jhalaria Peer village in Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, a 65-year-old government-appointed priest and his family have been subjected to a brutal social boycott, allegedly orchestrated by local strongmen. The priest's "crime"? Opposing the shifting of an idol from a 300-year-old ancient temple-land. A village panchayat -- run like a self-styled Khap court -- not only banned shops and services from dealing with the priest's family but even barred his grandchildren from attending school. A shocking fine of Rs 51,000 was also announced against anyone who maintained contact with them. The entire decision, read aloud publicly by a local panchayat secretary and captured on video, has gone viral, sparking outrage. The temple in question, Dev Dharmaraj Mandir, stands in Badnagar tehsil and has been under the care of Poonamchand 'Punaji' Chaudhary, the government-appointed priest for decades. The priest also cultivates 4-7 bighas of temple-allotted land for sustenance. According to Punaji, a group of powerful locals, under the pretext of "temple renovation," collected donations from villagers. But instead of restoring the ancient shrine, they built a new structure without permission and attempted to move the original idol. When Punaji opposed this move and filed a legal objection, the villagers turned on him. On July 14, a village panchayat was convened at the Narayan temple, where the boycott decision was read out by Gokul Singh Devda, secretary to a different gram panchayat. In a video, Devda can be seen announcing the ban on social, economic, and religious interaction with the priest's family. Villagers raised hands in agreement, and signatures were taken as proof of consensus. The decree stated: No one will sell milk, curd, groceries to Punaji's family; sweepers will not collect garbage from their house; no community member will perform religious functions for them; their grandchildren Virat, Satish, and Sandhya would be expelled from Shri Sai Public School, where they study in Classes 3, 5, and 8; anyone assisting the family will be fined Rs 51,000. Shockingly, the school principal complied, allegedly under local pressure, and refused to allow the children to attend classes. A devastated Punaji approached District Collector Roshan Singh with the video evidence and a copy of the written order. The Collector has ordered an immediate inquiry. Community leaders, meanwhile, have called the boycott 'social terrorism', likening it to Sharia-style justice. Kamal Chaudhary, head of the Chaudhary Samaj, said, "This is not a village panchayat. It is an illegal court run by bullies. We demand action against every individual involved, especially the government-employed secretary who announced the boycott". Behind the boycott lies an ugly battle for land, say locals. The temple's 7 bighas are fertile and valuable. "They are trying to evict us in the name of religious reorganisation," said Punaji's son Kamal. "They want to push us out by isolating us socially, economically, and now, educationally," he added.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and sought additional financial support of Rs 10,000 crore for various projects. On his second day of the visit, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief -- a key NDA ally -- highlighted that the state is still facing a deficit of financial resources due to bifurcation, an official release said. Naidu requested the central government to grant an additional allocation of Rs 10,000 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme for 2025-26. He sought the release of the second tranche of funds as a grant to Amaravati capital, and appealed to the Union Minister to make up for the revenue deficit faced by the state under the 16th Finance Commission. He submitted a memorandum requesting financial support for various state projects. The chief minister informed Sitharaman that the construction of Amaravati requires a total of Rs 79,280 crore, with works worth Rs 44,351 crore already underway. However, Rs 26,000 crore remains unallocated, the release stated. He emphasized the need for additional funds to complete the capital's development and requested that the second tranche of aid for Amaravati be disbursed as a grant. Delhi Orders Probe Into Rs 145-Crore 'Scam' In Jai Bhim Coaching Scheme
Delhi: The Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana, a scheme meant to fund free coaching at private institutes for underprivileged students during the Aam Aadmi Party government, is now at the centre of a political and financial controversy. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday ordered an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) probe into an alleged Rs 145-crore scam linked to the scheme during the Covid period. The announcement was made by Delhi's Home and Education Minister Ashish Sood and SC/ST Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh while addressing a press conference, alleging large-scale irregularities under the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. "The Jai Bhim scheme was started to help SC/ST/OBC/EWS/Minority students prepare for competitive exams like UPSC and NEET, but during the pandemic, it became a tool for embezzlement," Mr Sood said. He added that coaching institutes prepared a bill payment of Rs 145 crore between July 2021 and August 2022-far beyond the scheme's original budget of Rs 15 crore. Out of 13,000 student claims submitted by coaching centres, only about 3,000 could be verified, Mr Sood said, adding, the rest allegedly lacked documentation, signatures, or any record of attendance. "The average coaching cost is Rs 1 lakh for IAS, Rs 50,000 for MBA/CLAT, Rs 30,000 for SSC/LIC, Rs 25,000 for Group-C exams and Rs 10,000 for interview preparation," he said. "Even if we consider that all 3,000 verified students took IAS coaching, the maximum cost would be around Rs 30 crore. How did it become Rs 145 crore?," Mr Soon added. He alleged that AAP has insulted Dr Ambedkar's legacy and turned a welfare scheme into a nexus of corruption. Following a recommendation from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the LG approved a detailed probe by the ACB into what is now being referred to as an "alleged coaching scam." The investigation will focus on 35 coaching centres that failed to provide verified data for even 100 students, SC/ST Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said. He said the scheme, which began in 2018, was intended to create educational opportunities for Dalit students. "Instead, it was allegedly turned into a money-making racket. We owe it to the students to investigate this thoroughly," Singh said. 'Witch Hunt, Not Governance': AAP Responds The Aam Aadmi Party has hit back, calling the probe a "politically motivated witch hunt." In a statement, AAP accused the BJP-led government of using state agencies to target opposition leaders instead of focusing on governance. "Six months into power, the BJP has offered no solutions to Delhi's real problems-just endless vendetta politics," the party said, adding, "The functioning model of education and health has been dismantled. Now, instead of delivering on promises like Rs 2,500 to women, they are digging up old files to attack AAP." The party also alleged that civic issues such as power cuts, sewer overflows, and fee hikes in private schools have worsened under the BJP's watch.
