Dame Emma Thompson loved playing a 'real female heroine'
The 66-year-old actress stars in the new action-thriller film, and Emma - who plays a widowed woman who finds herself in the middle of a kidnapping plot - has explained what drew her to the project.
During a conversation at the Locarno Film Festival, Emma shared: "We seem to be telling an awful lot of stories about the super rich or about the dark side of human nature, and this woman's life, this ordinary humble life, is so beautiful and so rich.
"She's able to say: 'I'm able to let it go to let someone else find herself.' It's a story of her love."
Emma confessed to being a big fan of her on-screen character, suggesting that she's an outlier in the movie business.
She said: "30 years ago, when I was starting out, I had this woman's group. My first question to them was: 'Who's the female hero?' I was still identifying with Marlon Brando and I wasn't happy about it.
"This woman is a real female heroine because she doesn't say: 'You should be afraid because I have certain skills.' I mean, she can sew, she's been formed by weather and lived in close proximity with nature. She knows that she can mess people up by freezing their stuff."
Emma stars in the movie alongside Laurel Marsden, Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca, as well as her real-life daughter Gaia Wise, who plays her younger self.
And Emma relished the experience of spending quality time with her co-stars.
She shared: "We went on long walks before we started and talked about what [this couple's] life would have been like. What they'd have eaten, what games they played and what their conversations were.
"Gaia plays her in the 'full of love' bit of her life – I was in the 'my life is over, and I got to say goodbye' piece. She's grieving and something distracts her, and then she's back to where she started. It's such a beautiful circle."
Emma is set to receive the Leopard Club Award at the Locarno Film Festival, and the event organisers have already heaped praise on the acclaimed actress.
The organisers said in a statement: "She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to have won for both acting and screenwriting. Thompson's willingness to take risks with her roles has meant that she has remained a vital force on stage and screen for four decades, a testament to the depth of affection multiple generations of fans hold for her."

Emma's close friend Jennifer Lawrence also contributed to the piece and admits that she had reservations about her pal's bold new look after she had made a major hair transformation for her portrayal of tennis legend Billie Jean King in the 2017 film Battle of the Sexes. The 34-year-old actress said: "I really didn't want her to shave her head. I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut." However, The Hunger Games star was quickly won round when she got to see Emma without her hair. Lawrence said: "Honestly, (Emma) looked beautiful. She pulled it off."

British actress Emma Thompson has revealed she once turned down a date with US President Donald Trump. The 66-year-old said she was on the set of her movie Primary Colors back in 1995 when she received a phone call from the businessman asking her whether she would like to go out for dinner and stay at one of his hotels. She's convinced Trump must have had a team of people looking for suitable women he could take out. "I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through. And I bet he's got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that's what he was looking for," she said. "And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that's stalking ... I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history," Thompson joked. Sebastian Stan to star in new Frankenstein movie
Sebastian Stan is set to star in a new Frankenstein movie from Dracula director Radu Jude. The moviemaker premiered his new take on Bram Stoker's Dracula at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Sunday (10.08.25) and he's now revealed he's working on a revamped version of Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein which will be set in Romania. He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I'm writing a film now. It's a Frankenstein film in Romania. Frankenstein in Romania, it's going to be called." Jude told the publication he pitched the idea to Stan - who was born in Romania - and he liked the idea and his plan is to have the actor play both roles of scientist Victor Frankenstein and his monster. It will follow another new version of the story - Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein - which stars Oscar Isaac as the creator and Jacob Elordi as the monster and is set to be released at the end of August. Elordi recently admitted he binge-watched all of the previous Frankenstein to help him get his version of the monster right. He told Vanity Fair magazine: "I devoured all of his monsters. At first I thought, I'll stay away from this. I want to do my own thing. And then I asked Guillermo: 'Should I watch the other Frankensteins?' And he goes: 'What the f*** do you mean?' I was like: 'Well, I don't want it to be influenced.' "He says: 'My friend, it's a movie, it can't f****** hurt you.' I went home and I just binged them." Andrew Garfield had previously been hired to play the role but he was forced to exit the project because of delays from the 2023 Hollywood strikes - and Del Toro is thankful to Elordi for stepping in at such short notice. He added to the publication: "Andrew Garfield stepping out and Jacob coming in. I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for the creature. "And we have a supernaturally good connection. It's like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it ... "We recast, and we had nine weeks. You can't be under more pressure than that."
