Caerphilly man Ben Crook accidentally fell to his death
A man fell to his death hours after being escorted off a plane in Turkey after getting into a row with flight staff over wanting more alcohol, an inquest has heard.Ben Crook, 32, arrived in Antalya, Turkey, on 24 September to celebrate his birthday but got separated from his partner and her children after the argument.Newport Coroner's Court heard he smashed his and his partner's phones during the confrontation, so could not reach her to find out where they were staying for their holiday.He died a few hours later after a fall "from a height" and coroner Caroline Saunders concluded there was "no evidence of third party involvement or that he jumped" and that his death was an accident.
A post-mortem examination carried out in Newport concluded Mr Cook's cause of death was a fractured skull and pelvis caused by blunt trauma, that was a fall.The court heard that window fitter Mr Crook was a nervous flyer and started drinking before he left his house in Abertridwr, Caerphilly county on 23 September 2024. He was also buying alcohol in the duty free area of the airport.
Evidence from Mr Crook's partner Jess Jenkins said he "became a little difficult" as the flight went on and started "shouting at a male steward demanding he obtain more alcohol".He ended up breaking both their phones and was escorted off the plane when they landed.The court heard he tried to contact Ms Jenkins and his father while in Turkey after borrowing a phone from a couple he met, but those messages were not seen until after his death.The couple were later tracked down by Mr Crook's family who said he was "pretty shaky and possibly hungover" and they last saw him walking off across the harbour.Ms Saunders said it was then "unclear where Ben went or why" but at about 18:30, he suffered a fall on Cumhuriyet Street in Antalya and was seen by "unidentified witness who said this was an accident". The court heard the witnesses had said people thought it was a "freak accident" as he was smoking and he fell and there was some question about him being drunk or dizzy. Mr Crook died in the early hours of 25 September after being taken to a hospital in AntalyaEvidence from Mr Crook's sister, Amy Crook, said her brother's drug and alcohol consumption had increased in the last six months of his life and he had suffered with mental health problems since he was a teenager.But she said the family did not believe he would have taken his own life, "leaving behind his two children who he adored". Toxicology tests found alcohol, cocaine, cocaethylene and ketamine in Mr Crook's blood but the coroner concluded the ketamine was likely administered by paramedics as they tried to resuscitate him.

The 60ft plummet left Maria with horrific injuries, including a fractured skull.. Coroner Kate Robertson returned a conclusion of accidental death and passed on her condolences to Maria's family and friends. Both women were attended to by Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation. 4 Speaking of Maria's accident, the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team said: "A group was ascending the north-ridge when one of them fell 20 metres into steep terrain. "Passers-by with climbing equipment abseiled down and made her safe, and a team member already nearby made his way down and started CPR. "Colleagues from Welsh Ambulance Service stood by at base while the Coastguard helicopter dropped team members onto the mountain. "Unfortunately, the casualty had not survived her injuries, and she was brought down to Oggie base. "The thoughts of all involved are with the casualties families and friends, thank you to all the members of the public who tried to help." Neil Oakes, who was on a slightly different route up the mountain at the time Maria fell, told of his horror at witnessing the tragedy unfold. He said: "I turned and saw Ms Eftimova tumbling through the air below me. She was already in freefall. "I knew there was going to be an impact on the rocky outcrop below so I turned away for a split second. I was shouting 'No, no, no, no.' "When I turned back she was on the ledge below. I knew that it was serious. "I said 'She's gone. She's fallen.' I was in shock."

Tributes paid to ‘absolute gentleman' (81) killed in Kerry cycle accident
Tributes have been paid to an absolute gentleman who was killed in a cycling accident in County Kerry on Tuesday June 10th. The cyclist, who was a man in his 80s, died after he was struck by a vehicle in Kilgarvan at around 1.40pm on Tuesday. Advertisement He has been named locally as Paddy O'Donoghue (81) from Gortahoonig, Muckross, Killarney, Kerry. The incident happened on the R569 road, Church Grounds in Kilgarvan, gardaí said. Mr O'Donoghue was declared dead at the scene. Gardaí say the Coroner has been informed and a postmortem examination will take place. Locals described Mr O'Donoghue as an absolute gentleman who loved the outdoors and regularly cycled in the area. He had often taken part in the Ring of Kerry Cycle each year. Paying tribute his local Glenflesk GAA club said ''Glenflesk GAA would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Paddy O'Donoghue on his sad passing. He was a true Glenflesk stalwart as a player, mentor and lifelong supporter''. Advertisement Friends also paid tribute. One friend said '' So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Paddy, loved meeting him on my walks and we sorting out all the problems of the world, condolences to Brenda and family and all extended families. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet but should be known on Thursday June 12th. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them. They also said in a statement that the road where the accident took place was closed off and diversions were in place. Contractor in Heathrow migrant escape ‘lost another deportee'
The contractor at the centre of a migrant escape at Heathrow airport 'lost' another deportee in Istanbul, a former officer has claimed. Gary Costin, a former deportee custody officer with the contractor Mitie, said the escape attempt at Heathrow was not an isolated case, and cited four other examples of deportees attempting to abscond in the past three years. On Sunday, an illegal migrant about to be deported back to India was filmed being chased across the airport tarmac pursued by security officers before being caught. He was being escorted by contractors Mitie Care and Custody on behalf of the Home Office. Mr Costin, who was sacked by Mitie after sharing a Reform MP's post, claimed: 'Subcontractors who were working for Mitie taking people back to Somalia lost this individual in Turkey. 'I don't believe he has ever been found. He managed to escape through a hole in the roof, in the toilet or smoking area at Istanbul airport.' Speaking on Talk Radio, he also alleged another deportee on a courtroom visit for a hearing managed to escape out of a window while a third pushed past escorts on an air bridge crowded with passengers at Heathrow before he was subsequently found in a lavatory. A fourth managed to smash a window in the back of a van in Heathrow before evading two escorts, claimed Mr Costin. A team leader managed to detain him. He alleged that the 'gene pool' of good escorts had been watered down by an intensive recruitment campaign by Mitie. 'Training then was done by inexperienced staff who hadn't been in the job five minutes. And it was like the blind leading the blind,' he said. He alleged a basic lack of fitness among officers. 'The fitness of 50 per cent of the staff, I would say, is questionable, and there is no fitness test whatsoever. There were thoughts and talk about bringing fitness tests in, but this didn't happen because they realised they would lose too many staff because of this,' he said. Mitie said it could not comment on individual operations but sources maintained the incident at Heathrow airport on Sunday was extremely rare and was being fully investigated. 'We are proud of the high standards and professional conduct that our care and custody colleagues exhibit every day, often in very challenging circumstances, when carrying out escorting services,' said a source. 'All of our officers have undergone an extensive training programme including the Home Office manual for escorting safely training course – specialist training to ensure escorts have all the skills required to safely remove people from the country – as well as having annual refreshers.' Mr Costin was sacked after sharing a post on X by then Reform leader Richard Tice. It commented on a GB News article headlined 'Home Office Islamic Network aimed to recruit Muslim staff and 'influence policymakers' from the inside'. The piece pointed to Home Office documents showing that a group of more than 700 civil servants aimed to make policy more inclusive of Muslim needs. Mr Costin, who had spent 15 years working for government contractors G4S and Mitie, forwarded a screenshot of Tice's post, which had already been captioned 'Uh oh'. The 57-year-old was suspended in April last year and later sacked, although he had not added any of his own comments when sending the message to a WhatsApp group.
