Expressing his admiration for the participants of the 2025 Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals, Anwar commended their eloquence, confidence, thoughtful use of facts, and measured arguments — qualities he said should be emulated by parliamentarians.
'I am very proud of the quality of the debate, and I couldn't help but wonder - why shouldn't Members of Parliament learn from this? If we wish to debate, we must first master knowledge, analyse it, process it, and present it effectively.
'These young participants demonstrated an impressive standard of debate, and I salute them. Debate is not merely about speaking well; it is about the ability to understand, analyse, and articulate ideas clearly. That is precisely what I believe our Members of Parliament should learn to emulate,' he said.
Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, also praised the current generation of students for their strong command of the Malay language and their ability to engage in discussions with depth, knowledge, and understanding. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, which seeks to make secondary education compulsory, was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, when tabling the Bill, said the second reading is expected to take place during the current parliamentary sitting. The Bill seeks to amend Section 2 of the Education Act 1996 (Act 550) to substitute the definition of 'compulsory education' to include secondary education. It also proposes a new Section 32A, which provides that every parent whose child is a Malaysian citizen and resides in Malaysia must ensure the child is enrolled in a secondary education institution and remains in school throughout the secondary education period. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction. The Bill also states that the proposed amendments will involve additional government expenditure, the amount of which has yet to be determined. — Bernama

Anwar steps in as Thailand-Cambodia tensions rise: Ceasefire talks kick off in Putrajaya
PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand arrived in Malaysia on Monday for talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in their fierce border conflict, a Malaysian official said, amid an international effort to halt the fighting which entered a fifth day. The ambassadors to Malaysia of the United States and China were also present at the meeting in Malaysia's administrative capital of Putrajaya, the official said. It is being hosted at the residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the chair of the regional bloc Asean. Both Thailand and Cambodia accuse the other of starting the fighting last week and then escalating the clashes with heavy artillery bombardment at multiple locations along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, the deadliest conflict in more than a decade between the Southeast Asian neighbours. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet had earlier said the talks were co-organised by Malaysia and the United States, and that China would also take part in them. 'The purpose of this meeting is to achieve an immediate 'ceasefire', initiated by President Donald Trump and agreed to by the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand,' Hun Manet said in a post on X as he departed for the talks. Trump said on Sunday he believed both Thailand and Cambodia wanted to settle their differences after he told the leaders of both countries that he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended their fighting. Thailand's leader said there were doubts about Cambodia's sincerity ahead of the negotiations in Malaysia. 'We are not confident in Cambodia, their actions so far have reflected insincerity in solving the problem,' acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters ahead of his departure for Malaysia. 'Cambodia has violated international law, but everybody wants to see peace. Nobody wants to see violence that affects civilians.' Cambodia has strongly denied Thai accusations it has fired at civilian targets, and has instead said that Thailand has put innocent lives at risk. It has called for the international community to condemn Thailand's aggression against it. The tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the killing in late May of a Cambodian soldier during a brief skirmish. Border troops on both sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had proposed ceasefire talks soon after the border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, and China and the United States also offered to assist in negotiations. — Reuters

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 National Day celebrations in Muar, Johor, on Sunday, Anwar aimed his remarks at politicians who, he said, use racial rhetoric to mask their corruption. 'Some political families have assets worth RM4 billion, others sit on RM1.2 billion in wealth, yet they shamelessly shout about 'defending the Malays',' Anwar said, without naming specific individuals. The Prime Minister called on these leaders to return their wealth to the state and the Malay community before claiming to be their defenders. 'How much do you have now? RM2 billion? Fine, return RM1.5 billion to the government and the Malays – that would be the right thing to do,' he said. Witty Response to Calls for Resignation When faced with chants of 'Anwar Turun' (Anwar step down), the Prime Minister responded with humour. Anwar said he had already 'turun ke Muar' (come down to Muar), drawing laughter from the crowd. He also appeared to reference recent calls for his resignation, saying those demanding he step down should first return the billions they allegedly took from the people. 'Billions of ringgit is a huge amount that must be returned to the country and its people,' he said. Anti-Corruption Drive Not About Revenge The Prime Minister emphasised that his administration's anti-corruption efforts are aimed at cleaning up the country, not seeking revenge. He stressed that national and state leaders must not steal from the people and the country, and must uphold their responsibilities to both the public and to God. 'Times have changed. We must correct the behaviour of some leaders who abuse their power for personal and family gain, so that our next generation can have a better future,' Anwar said. The 'Turun Anwar' rally held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (26 July) saw an estimated 18,000 participants calling for Anwar's resignation. Former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin attended the rally.
