Lux hits 2-run homer and Singer pitches triple-happy Reds to 4-1 win over Angels
TJ Friedl had a leadoff single in the first inning off Victor Mederos, making his second career start, and Lux followed with his fifth homer for a 2-0 lead.
Elly De La Cruz led off the fifth with his fourth triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Austin Hays to make it 3-1. Hays tripled in the third but was stranded.
Ke'Bryan Hayes hit the Reds' third leadoff triple when center fielder Luis Rengifo let the ball get over his head in the eighth. Matt McLain's sacrifice fly pushed it to 4-1. The three triples were the most for the Reds since they hit five in a 17-9 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 13, 2019.
Brady Singer (11-9) went six innings for Cincinnati and allowed only an RBI double by Taylor Ward in the first. Singer is 3-1 in four August starts, yielding five runs over 21 2/3 innings.
Scott Barlow replaced Luis Mey with two on and two outs in the eighth and struck out Jo Adell swinging to keep it 4-1. Barlow fanned three more in the ninth for his first save this season.
Singer retired nine straight batters until Nolan Schanuel and Mike Trout hit back-to-back singles with one out in the sixth. Singer retired Ward on a shallow fly to right and struck out Yoán Moncada looking to keep it 3-1.

The Reds (66-60) used their ninth straight victory over the Angels (60-65) to pull within one game of the Mets for the final National League wild card.

Erasmus makes 10 changes to Springboks lineup after shocking Rugby Championship loss to Australia
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus made 10 changes to his starting XV for Saturday's second test against Australia as the Rugby World Cup champions bid to avenge a shocking 38-22 home loss to the Wallabies last weekend. The overhaul reflects strategic changes and the absence of injured skipper Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and both wingers from the Ellis Park defeat. Veteran center Jessie Kriel will stand in as captain for Kolisi and prop Ox Nche will be vice-captain, while Cheslin Koble, Damian de Allende and Willie le Roux return so the starting XV for the second round of the Rugby Championship. Kriel, Nche, Malcom Marx, Marco van Staden and Grant Williams are the only players retained for the starting lineup. Kriel and de Allende will combine in the Springboks midfield for the 38th time, and Handre Pollard returns at No. 10 to partner Williams in the halves. Betts staying at shortstop despite Dodgers' outfield struggles
DENVER (AP) — Mookie Betts has played strong defense in his first full season as a shortstop, but the recent outfield play for the Los Angeles Dodgers has manager Dave Roberts fielding questions about whether the 2018 AL MVP would be more valuable to the team in right field. Outfield defense has been a problem for Los Angeles, and Roberts called out Teoscar Hernández's play in right after Monday night's 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Hernández failed to catch Ezequiel Tovar's high popup that landed for a double in the ninth inning, and Tovar scored the winning run two pitches later. But Roberts isn't ready to move Betts from shortstop, where he has played all but one inning this season. Betts entered Tuesday night with a .984 fielding percentage and has committed just six errors in 376 chances. 'There's got to be an alternative, right?' Roberts said before Tuesday night's game against Colorado. 'And I think right now, the way Mookie's playing at short, not bouncing him around, I think we feel very good about it.' Betts met with Roberts after Monday night's loss but the manager said it was just to check in. 'Mookie pops in my office all the time and we were just talking about his swing,' Roberts said. 'I wanted him to check in with me about where he's at, certain checkpoints as we go through the season, and that was a check-in.' The Dodgers have options in the outfield, but Michael Conforto has struggled at the plate and Tommy Edman, Kiké Hernández and Hyeseong Kim are on the injured list. Edman and Hernández can play infield and outfield, which would strengthen the defense. Teoscar Hernández, despite his recent offensive struggles, is a stronger option with the bat than Conforto. The slugger had an RBI double in the first inning Tuesday night that gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. 'Given everything that we were going through, we've gone through, we're still finding ways to win a lot of ballgames,' Roberts said. 'Just in totality, we can all do a better job, all of us. And so I just refuse to try to pin it on one position, one person. ... That's just not what I do." ___
