Sir Stephen Fry wants to create a TV drama series where people communicate without technology
Sir Stephen Fry wants to create a TV drama series where people return to communicating in an "unplugged life".
The 67-year-old actor and broadcaster's idea is for emails and social media platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, to be seen as the "uncoolest thing", and that a pupil would ask his teacher how to hand in an essay because he does not have a computer and, therefore, cannot submit it via an email.
Chatting to entrepreneur John Reynolds on a recent episode of the Extraordinary Life podcast, Stephen revealed: "I was going to write a TV series about it, in which this kid comes to a school and completely changes the school."
As the pupil does not communicate by using electronics, his cohort thinks the youngster is odd.
The Celebrity Traitors star continued: "And anyway, they all stare at this kid, 'Who is this ridiculous child?'"
Eventually, the pupil motivated the tech-savvy children to communicate in the old-fashioned way, and they enjoyed it.
Stephen added: "He starts basically influencing everybody. They think this is actually quite a fun way to live. It's really enjoyable.
"And I think it just takes that, it would just be a little - the balance would just shift."
Stephen regularly posted on X, when it was known as Twitter, until 2022 - a few months before Elon Musk purchased the platform.
He has kept his account but is not active on it - just like on other social media platforms.
And Stephen thinks social media sites have made the world a far worse place.
He explained: "We come to a tipping point now, where the uncoolest thing in the world is Snapchat and Instagram and TikTok.
"And they are just boring. And we know they're harmful, but they're also vapid and shallow."
The Jeopardy! host said the "coolest" schoolchildren would be those who are not glued to a screen.
He said: "But what incredible fun if you were 15 to live an off-grid life, and unplugged life, using all these fabulous old tools.
"You would be the coolest people in the school."
Stephen initially thought social media "could change the world" in a good way.
He said during his Digital Futures Institute lecture at King's College London in 2024: "I'm the chump who thought social media could change the world."

Travis Kelce and Other NFL Tight Ends Reveal Their Favorite Taylor Swift Song
Travis Kelce revealed his favorite song by girlfriend Taylor Swift, but said he was "too shy" to sing any lyrics Other tight ends like George Kittle and Rob Gronkowski also revealed their favorite songs by Swift The most popular Swift songs among the tight ends were "Shake It Off" and "22"The guys of Tight End University have great taste. After fans went wild over an impromptu performance from Taylor Swift at her boyfriend Travis Kelce's Tight Ends & Friends concert in Nashville, the tight ends were asked to reveal their favorite song by the superstar singer in a video on the Bussin' with the Boys podcast's Instagram account. The first tight end shown is Rob Gronkowski, who won four Super Bowls before retiring in 2022. Gronkowski, 36, said his favorite Swift track is "Shake It Off," which was the song she performed at the concert on June 24. Kelce, 35, said his favorite song by his girlfriend is "So High School," from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department. The song's lyrics are seemingly a nod to her relationship with the Chiefs star, who gave PEOPLE the same answer at his Kelce Car Jam in May 2024. After revealing his answer, Kelce was asked to sing a few lyrics, but became nervous and laughingly said he's "too shy." George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers said his favorite song by Swift is her 2008 hit "Love Story" and called it "incredible." Others said they loved "22" from her 2012 album Red. Swift took the stage with singer Kane Brown at Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville on June 24. Addressing the excited crowd, Swift said, 'We would like to dedicate this to our favorite players who are going to play and these are the tight ends,' as she introduced the song while referencing its lyrics. Threads Expands its Hidden Words Options
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Threads continues to steadily separate from Instagram, and add more customization and control options, this time with an expansion of its 'Hidden Words' settings, so that you can block unwanted discussion from your experience. As you can see in these example screens, Threads has now added another element to its Hidden Words option, with an optional toggle to block offensive content, and/or set your own custom terms and emojis to filter out of your Threads experience. The update is an expansion on the Hidden Words features that Threads first launched back in April. As explained by Threads chief Adam Mosseri: '[The update] includes newly added custom filters to block words, phrases, and emojis in batches, with optional time limits. Threads is about fostering an open exchange of perspectives, and to do so people need to be able to shape the experience into one where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. This is just one more idea in support of that goal.' In terms of time limits, users can choose to block certain words, phrases, or emojis, and set an expiration date on that setting within 30 days. So if there's a topic that's really annoying you, or TV show spoilers you want to avoid, you can erase them from your view for a certain time. It's a significant update, in more ways than one, because up till now, Threads has primarily relied on your IG settings for the same, using your Instagram profile as a proxy for your Threads experience. But with Threads evolving into its own platform, the Threads team is now adding more options that are separate from Instagram. Which is a smart move. While it made sense for Meta to boost Threads take-up by integrating it with IG in its initial launch stage, the way that people now use Threads is, for most people at least, very different to what they come to Instagram for. As such, Threads needs its own settings, and its own processes, separate from your Instagram interactions and preferences, in order to build it into its own experience. The Threads team has already taken steps on this front, by removing Threads follow recommendations based on what you engage with on IG, while it's also testing the option to create a Threads profile without using your Instagram login. These are all important steps to separate the two, and enable Threads to grow into a new platform of its own. And with 350 million users, Threads should now have enough engagement insights, based on Threads activity in isolation, to have a clear understanding of engagement trends and interest graphs separate from IG. Providing Threads-specific controls is another step in this direction, as Meta looks to build it into the next billion-user platform. Is that even possible? I mean, Twitter/X has never exceeded 600 million users, so it does seem like the interest in a real-time, text-based social feed like this is limited. But maybe, if Meta can get it right, it could well overtake the growth of the format's originator at some stage. Sign in to access your portfolio

Ivanka Trump strikes a pose in Venice ahead of Jeff Bezos' wedding: ‘Con amore'
Like a good neighbor, Ivanka Trump is there. Donald Trump's oldest daughter has arrived for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice, Italy. Trump lives close to the bride and groom to be in Indian Creek Village, aka 'Billionaire Bunker' in Miami Beach, with her husband Jared Kushner and three kids. Apparently, the relationship is beyond the borrowing sugar phase. In an Instagram post taken in the floating city, Trump shared snaps of herself in a flowery, lacy minidress. She and Kushner were likely headed to one of the many lavish parties the Amazon founder and his fiancée are throwing before they tie the knot. The caption: 'Ready to celebrate the love story of our friends.' The 43-year-old native New Yorker also posed with her brood on a terrace, writing in Italian: 'Da Venezia, con amore.' (From Venice, with love.) The stunning dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute can be seen in the background. More locals who have jetted in for the grand affair set to take place this weekend: Jared's younger brother Joshua Kushner and his pregnant supermodel wife Karlie Kloss, who is expecting their third child. The pair have a home in nearby North Bay Road, also in Miami Beach. Want to know how much of a six degrees of separation kind of town the 305 is? Kloss recently vacationed with Trump in Costa Rica, along with Gisele Bundchen, the ex wife of Tom Brady, who also lives in the Bunker in a ginormous bachelor pad. The NFL legend is expected by boat any minute now for what is expected to be the nuptials of the century. We have a feeling Bundchen, even if invited, might sit this one out.
