Noel Clarke propositioned young woman in toilet cubicle, court told

The Guardian26-03-2025

A young runner on a Noel Clarke film left the industry for three years after the actor followed her into the women's toilets, pulled out a condom and propositioned her, the high court has heard.
Philippa Crabb, now a production manager, was working in an entry-level position on Brotherhood, the last of the Kidulthood trilogy, written and produced by Clarke, when he offered her a small role as a nurse.
In one of the articles that is the subject of the former Doctor Who actor's libel claim against the Guardian, Crabb detailed how Clarke asked her for a sexual favour in return for the part. In her witness statement she recalled another incident, not reported in the 2021-22 publications, which she said took place at the film's wrap party.
'Noel then came into the women's toilets … I went into a cubicle and, as I went to close the door, Noel opened it and came into it after me. I was at the back of what was quite a very small cubicle and he leaned against the door, facing me and blocking the way out.
'He pulled a condom out of his pocket and said something to the effect of: 'How about it then.' I said something about his wife and three kids, as I had seen them before on set. I can't remember his response in precise words but it was something along the lines of: 'I don't care.' His attitude in that moment changed. He went from friendly to defensive. I just felt huge pressure from him.
'I can't remember how I got out of the cubicle. He must have moved to the side or something and I pushed past and somehow I got away.'
Philip Williams, representing Clarke, suggested she had made up the incident and not told the Guardian about it, citing a transcript of a conversation he said that she had with one of its journalists in which it was not mentioned.
But Crabb said she had told the Guardian but requested that it not be included in the article when she realised her name was going to be published.
Another witness on Wednesday was Helen Atherton, a standby art director whose allegations also featured in the Guardian's reporting. She said in her witness statement that Clarke subjected her to relentless 'looks, comments and gestures' about her bottom during her first two weeks on the set of Brotherhood.
Asked by Williams why she did not simply say she did not like Clarke's 'bad jokes' immediately, Atherton replied: 'Unfortunately I think a lot of women do put up with treatment like that in the film industry – but hopefully that is changing – and that's why I didn't confront him.'
However, she told the court that such behaviour usually came from those in more junior positions. 'I've never had any remarks from another director or someone in a hierarchy position,' Atherton told the court.
Clarke admits commenting twice on her bottom but says he apologised and it was accepted.
The court also heard from Synne Seltveit, a Norwegian friend of Clarke's assistant producer, Gina Powell. Seltveit claims Clarke sent her an unsolicited picture on Snapchat of 'a naked erect penis which I presumed was his' before her 2015 trip to the UK to see Powell.
Williams questioned the timing, saying it did not make 'any logical sense' that Clarke would message her before he had even met her. But Seltveit said it would have been easy to find her on Snapchat, adding: 'He knew I was coming, he knew I was a good friend of Gina.'
Her friend took a picture of the 'dick-pic', which the metadata dates to 4 June 2015, the court heard.
Williams said: 'My client denies sending that picture and he denies that it's his penis.'

Jay Slater former detective opens up on teens disapperance with new information

The 19-year-old vanished in Tenerife and was later found dead. Mark Williams-Thomas has revealed new information about the disappearance of tragic teenager Jay Slater - after speaking to the youngster's family and other key figures. The former detective also spoke with witnesses in the case after the 19 year old apprentice bricklayer vanished while holidaying on the Spanish island of Tenerife. ‌ Jay, of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been to the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in the Playa de las Americas resort with friends on June 16 last year. ‌ The Mirror reports he is believed to have gone to the Airbnb apartment in the early hours of the next day, then subsequently vanished and was reported missing on June 18. His body was found in a steep and inaccessible area by a mountain rescue team from the Spanish Civil Guard near the village of Masca on July 15. Now Mark Williams-Thomas has given his findings on the case. He said he went to check for CCTV from inside the Papagayo nightclub and was surprised by the smell of drugs on the strip. He revealed that he was told to come back later and then also enquired at another club opposite which didn't have CCTV. He said: "I went to a club just across the road which is a club that we know Jay went to, and we know Jay was with the two black men, interestingly enough no CCTV inside, you have to question why. "Less than 30 seconds after getting out of the vehicle I was approached by a number of men offering me drugs, offering me cannabis, cocaine straight away, actually it is rife along the street. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I've never walked down a street where you can smell cannabis to the degree it is here, so prevalent, and there are police driving around, no one cares, no one cares at all." Mark Williams-Thomas tried to get to the bottom of a photo that Jay Slater had sent to a friend on Snapchat where he had two knives at the Airbnb and said "I've got these for my protection". ‌ But asked about the photo Ayub Qassim said that he know nothing about it. He said: "I was asleep upstairs this is the first I've heard of knives. I let him come to my house." Recounting his chat with Jay, the morning he left, he said: "He (Jay) said to me pal I'm off, this woman told me I can get a bus every 10 minutes, I told him that he's mad, there's no bus that's coming here every 10 minutes, chill out for a bit and I'll drop you off later on. ‌ "He said: 'No, no I've got to go to Los Cristianos, I need to scram, I need to chip out'. There's nothing more that I could do. I saw him walk off maybe down the steps. I maybe shut the door and said if you need me..." Ayub Qassim, who rented out the Airbnb in Masca where Jay stayed after the festival, told Mark Williams-Thomas how he became "public enemy number one". He said: " Lucy (Law) has my Snapchat, so has Brad (Hargreaves) we have each other on social media. I can chat to the mum, I don't need any of this. I've got journalists turning up at my house. I genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, let a guy come to my house. "He said to me 'mate they've all left ' and chatting to them, they said he wanted to carry on partying. I'm black, it's an unfortunate situation. I'm being nice in letting someone stay at mine and now I'm public enemy number one."

She revealed she'd had filler added to her bottom. Addressing fans, the TV star said: "So the bum is done! Here's a little sneaky, beaky, boopky!" - she then went onto to show how round her behind looked now. Her latest "tweakment" comes after fans were "left concerned" when she showed off a "painfully" tight face this week. Many have begged her to stop getting work done. Katie has previously been warned she is "dicing with death" with her surgery habits. It came after she revealed her plans for a fourth BBL operation. Standing for Brazilian Butt Lift, the procedure entails injecting fat from other parts of the body into the bottom to give a more rounded or lifted look. According to Dr Gerard Lambe, one of the UK's leading plastic surgeons and head of Reflect Clinic UK, the star has major factors to consider. Dr Lambe told New Magazine: 'Katie needs to be aware that she is putting her health and body under extreme pressure with the now countless number of procedures she's had done in the last year alone. "BBL is one of the most dangerous surgeries anyone can undergo and it has the highest mortality rate – it's one of Katie's riskiest surgeries yet. She is dicing with death." FACELIFT WOES Meanwhile, the TV star recently opted for tweakments abroad after being unhappy with her latest £10,000 facelift. Katie Price looks barely recognisable on supermarket visit as concerned fans claim her teeth are too big for her face Sources close to the star claimed she was less than impressed with her 'pixie ears' following the procedure. At the time, Closer Magazine reported: "Katie is heading to Turkey for her first New Year's procedure: fixing her pixie ears. 'She thinks they need correcting after her recent facelift. She's having her ears removed, then re-stitched in place and pinned back so that they don't stick out." Back in January, the mum-of-five took to Snapchat to share the gruesome photos, showing the sides of her face and cheeks all taped up. Katie confessed on Snapchat: "From my last surgery, there are just a few little bits that I want tweaking. 'Well, they need tweaking. So here I am getting ready. "That's the worst bit for me, the needle. "The needle's done so now I can relax."

EXCLUSIVE Ncuti Gatwa spoke at pro-Palestine rally outside Parliament just days after sudden on-screen exit as Doctor Who

As the BBC 's Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa came under fire when he mysteriously pulled out of his Eurovision hosting duties moments after Israel qualified last month. Now it can be revealed that three days after the actor departed Doctor Who, he spoke at a pro-Palestine demonstration outside parliament. On 3 June, the actor, 32, stood in front of a banner reading ' Gaza: Actions Not Words' and delivered a speech to hundreds of people at the Westminster event, organised by Choose Love – a charity that this week supported Greta Thunberg 's 'selfie yacht' trip to Gaza. Gatwa had withdrawn from his role as a Eurovision Grand Final spokesman just 18 days before his speech at the rally. It has prompted renewed speculation as to his motivation for pulling out of the role and whether the BBC was aware that he would do so if Israel qualified. He had been due to announce the UK jury's points during the live broadcast but was replaced at short notice by singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 46. The BBC made the change public only two minutes after Israel qualified for the final – prompting speculation that his withdrawal was a protest. The broadcaster cited 'unforeseen circumstances' as the reason. The timing raised eyebrows, as Israel's contestant, Yuval Raphael – a survivor of the October 7 Nova music festival attack – secured her place in the final that same evening. Gatwa has previously expressed support for the Palestinian cause on social media, sharing images of 'Free Palestine' graffiti and promoting fundraising campaigns. The Rwanda-born, Scotland-raised actor made history as the first Black actor to lead Doctor Who, taking on the role of the Fifteenth Doctor in 2023. However, his tenure ended after just two series, making him the second shortest-serving Doctor in the show's history – only Christopher Eccleston's single-series run was shorter. Gatwa's departure was announced in May 2025, when his character regenerated into Rose Tyler played by Billie Piper, 42, ending his 18-month stint in the Tardis. One attendee at the Westminster rally told the Mail: 'He actually read out the names of deceased Palestinian children from his mobile. 'Ncuti appears unaware that, despite his support for Palestine, he could face serious risks in parts of the Middle East. Given the timing – coming so soon after the Eurovision controversy and his abrupt departure from Doctor Who – his appearance may reflect a belief that his position at the BBC had become untenable.' He was joined at the rally by comedian Alexei Sayle and his former Doctor Who co-star Varada Sethu. Sethu, 33, who played companion Belinda Chandra in Doctor Who, who left the sci-fi show at the time as Gatwa, also spoke at the rally.
