Where is ex-VP Dhankhar: Sanjay Raut writes to Amit Shah

The Hindu5 days ago
Shiv Sena-UBT leader Sanjay Raut has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking to know the whereabouts of former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, claiming that attempts to reach him have been unsuccessful.
Mr. Dhankhar resigned as Vice-President on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, a development which came as a surprise for many.
"There has been no information about the whereabouts of our (former) Vice-President. What is his current location? How is his health? There is no clarity on these matters. Some members of the Rajya Sabha attempted to contact him but were unsuccessful," Mr. Raut said in his letter to Mr. Shah dated August 10.
The Shiv Sena-UBT leader shared the letter on X on Monday (August 11, 2025).
Mr. Raut said rumours are circulating in Delhi that Mr. Dhankhar has been confined to his residence and is reportedly not safe.
"There has been no communication with him or his staff, which is a matter of grave concern," he said.
"What exactly has happened to our (former) Vice-President? Where is he? How is his health? Is he safe? The nation deserves to know the truth about these questions," he said.
Last week, Shiv Sena-UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray asked about Mr. Dhankhar's whereabouts. "Where is the former Vice-President now? This is the issue that should be discussed," he said at a press conference here on Thursday (August 7, 2025).
Mr. Raut, a Rajya Sabha member, said some of his colleagues from the Upper House are considering filing a writ petition of Habeas Corpus in the Supreme Court as they are genuinely worried about Mr. Dhankhar.
"Before knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court, I thought it to be prudent to seek this information from you. I hope you will understand my sentiments and provide genuine information regarding Shri. Dhankhar's current whereabouts and his safety and health," Mr. Raut said.

Opposition leaders call it a betrayal of public trust. They accuse Abdullah of normalizing the 2019 decisions. These decisions revoked Article 370. Sajad Lone suggests a resolution in the assembly. Remove Ads Opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir stated that the signature campaign in support of statehood proposed by chief minister Omar Abdullah is mockery and betrayal of the trust and mandate of the people reposed in the National Conference in the last assembly opposition People's Democratic Party and People's Conference legislators accused Abdullah of normalizing the decisions of August 5, 2019, when the BJP led government in New Delhi, abrogated Article 370 and 35 (A) and downgraded the erstwhile state of J&K into the two Union Territories of J&K and during his speech on August 15, here in Srinagar had said that he will no longer be silent on the issue of restoration of statehood and instead hit the streets and reach out to people in all 90 assembly constituencies across J&K. He said that his government will get their signatures in support of restoration of statehood which will be submitted before the BJP leader government in New Delhi and the Supreme Court. The SC while hearing the petition on restoration of statehood on August 14, gave eight weeks time to the central government to submit their response.'We will support any movement towards statehood. But please don't make a mockery of statehood. Let us approach the Supreme Court as a constitutional entity not as another 'Tom Dick and Harry. Signature campaigns have no legal or constitutional sanctity,' said Sajad Lone of People's Conference. He suggested that the NC led government should pass a strong resolution in the J&K assembly. 'Our resolutions are not binding on the Supreme Court, but inherent in them will be constitutional dignity and reflect will of people…Political or signature campaigns have no legal or constitutional sanctity,' said Lone asking, 'Name one event empirically in India or in the rest of the world where signature campaigns have altered legal interpretations. They are not even admissible.'The PC chief also referred to the 2007 signature campaign 'Safr-e-Azadi' of the jailed Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Yasin Malik. 'The signature campaign for independence was carried out by Yasin Malik also. How far did that campaign go,' Lone asked. He accused Abdullah of showing, 'disregard, disdain and contempt for the assembly that has made him the CM.''I beg you. Please stop this childish and immature attitude. We will support any campaign unconditionally. But please ensure that a resolution from the state assembly is also passed and sent to the Supreme Court,' said Lone, adding, 'Don't set the stage for denial of statehood. Act like a leader. Don't throw tantrums…This is a real ideological battle. This is not a video game.'The PC legislator from Handwara, who served as a minister in the last PDP-BJP government, asked Abdullah to explain 'whether he was shielding and protecting the state BJP and giving them the luxury of not taking a position on statehood, by not passing a resolution on statehood?'The PDP legislator from Pulwama, Waheed Para said that Abdullah owes an apology not a signature campaign for normalising 5th August. 'With 50 MLAs behind him, he has reduced the fight for J&K's statehood to token gestures, after seeking votes door-to-door on the promise of restoring pre–5th August status,' said Para, adding, 'This is not just retreat, it is betrayal.' The PDP leader said that the people of J&K gave Abdullah a historic mandate to fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre. 'If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' said Para.

Mukesh Khanna Calls Out Jaya Bachchan's Behaviour Amid Parliament Video Row: ‘Journalists Ke Sath…'

Mukesh Khanna slammed Jaya Bachchan's behavior, saying her way of talking to journalists is wrong and alleging she speaks in Rajya Sabha only to oppose Modi. Jaya Bachchan has found herself in hot water after a video of her pushing a fan outside Parliament went viral. Many questioned her behaviour, and now Mukesh Khanna has also called out Jaya Bachchan. In a recent conversation, the actor shared that she is wrong in the way the actress in general talks to journalists. While chatting with FilmyGyan, and while calling out Jaya's behaviour, Mukesh said, 'Aaj kal ye jo unka journalists ke sath 'kya kar raha hai tu, kon hai, kya chahiye, this is wrong. Aap inke liye jee rahe ho, aur aajkal ye jo Rajya Sabha mein bolti hai mujhe aisa lagta hai ya to ye bigad gayi hai ghar se, ya Modi ke khilaf bolna hai isliye hi bolti hai. Aise-aisa argument deti hai jo mujhe nahi ache lagte.'" ('These days, the way she talks to journalists — 'what are you doing, who are you, what do you want, this is wrong' — you are living for them, and now when she speaks in the Rajya Sabha, I feel as if either she is upset at home or she just wants to speak against Modi. That's why she gives such arguments, which I don't like.") Why is Jaya Bachchan getting backlash? Actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan lost her cool on Tuesday when a man tried to take a selfie with her at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. A video of the incident surfaced on social media and left everyone shocked. In the clip, the Samajwadi Party MP was seen pushing a man trying to take a selfie with her. She also said, 'Kya kar rahe hain aap? (What are you doing?) What is this?" Kangana Ranaut and Ashoke Pandit call out Jaya Bachchan Taking to her Instagram stories, Kangana Ranaut wrote, 'Most spoilt and privileged woman. People put up with her tantrums/nonsense just because she is Amitabh Bachchan ji's wife. That Samajwadi topi looks like a rooster comb, while she looks like a fighting cock!! Such disgrace and shame." Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit took to his Instagram and said that the move was 'highly condemnable" and showed 'humiliation towards people who have elected her to serve them." He added, 'A public servant can't afford to be sulking and irritated 24×7. One expects humility and compassion from an artist of her calibre who has been loved by her fans, who are responsible for providing her this stature and position." In Independence Day speech, CM Revanth Reddy urges Centre to clear BC quota bills

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday urged the Centre to approve Telangana's landmark bills providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education and employment. The CM was addressing the gathering after hoisting the national flag during the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at Golconda Fort. Citing figures from the socio-economic survey conducted by the state government, covering 1.12 crore families, Revanth said the findings revealed that BCs constitute 56.33% of the state's population. 'Based on this data, our government has introduced 42% reservation for BCs. The bills passed by the state legislature have been sent to the Centre for approval. On this historic occasion, I urge the Union government to clear the bills,' he said. Revanth underscored his government's commitment to social justice, highlighting that Telangana is the first state in the country to implement Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorisation following a Supreme Court verdict, classifying 59 sub-castes into three distinct groups. The chief minister also painted a stark picture of the state's fiscal health, revealing that the Congress government had inherited a staggering debt burden of Rs 8,21,652 crore. This included Rs 6,71,757 crore in borrowings, Rs 40,154 crore in pending employee dues and scheme liabilities, and Rs 1,09,740 crore in obligations under the SC/ST sub-plan, Singareni Collieries, and the power sector, he said. Despite these constraints, the government has serviced Rs 2,20,676 crore in debt — Rs 1,32,498 crore in principal and Rs 88,178 crore in interest — while continuing welfare initiatives, he added. 'Mahalakshmi scheme benefitted women, RTC' Revanth, meanwhile, said that the Mahalakshmi scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, was a success. 'Launched within 48 hours of the government taking charge, the initiative has issued over 200 crore zero-fare tickets, saving women passengers an estimated Rs 6,790 crore collectively,' he highlighted. 'This is not just about free travel — it is about financial independence, educational access, and social mobility for women,' he said, adding that the scheme revitalised the state's transport corporation.
