Real Madrid are comeback kings - but history is against them
On three out of the past four occasions where Real Madrid have trailed after the first leg in the Champions League, they have fought back to reach the next round - against Wolfsburg in 2015-26 and in 2021-22 against both Paris St-Germain and Manchester City. But Arsenal can take belief from the fact that this is the joint-largest deficit Madrid have ever trailed by heading into a Champions League second leg.The last time they faced such a task was against Borussia Dortmund in the 2012-13 semi-final, when Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for Jurgen Klopp's side in Germany.Real did win the return match 2-0 in Madrid, but Dortmund progressed to the final on aggregate. In fact, the only time they have fought back from three goals down after a first leg came in their last 16 meeting with Derby County in the 1975-76 edition of the European Cup, winning 6-5 on aggregate following a 4-1 defeat at the Baseball Ground.A deficit of three goals or more has been overturned just four times since the European Cup became the Champions League in 1992.One team have overturned a four goal-deficit - Barcelona in the game christened 'La Remontada' in 2016-17, when they beat PSG 6-1 at the Nou Camp.Stats company Opta gives Arsenal an 89.7% chance of progressing to the semi-finals, and Real have lost five games in the competition this season - a tally that equals a club record.Read the full match preview here

Man United target Viktor Gyokeres is 'ready to go on strike' in bid to force summer move - as he 'threatens never to play for Sporting Lisbon again'
Viktor Gyokeres has threatened to never play for Sporting Lisbon again if the club do not lower their high asking price for the Swede, according to reports, amid a messy potential exit. Gyokeres has been the talk of the town this summer as several Premier League clubs look to bring in a striker ahead of the new season. Both Manchester United and Arsenal are said to be leading the race to sign the 27-year-old - who appears desperate for a route out of Sporting - with both clubs in need of filling a gaping hole in their attacks. The Swedish striker has a €100m (£84m) release clause in his Sporting contract, but prior to the campaign just gone, he was understood to have reached a gentleman's agreement with the Portuguese champions over a reduced asking price. Following positive discussions regarding his sale, he was assured he would be able to leave the Alvalade this summer if a club met €60m (£51m), plus €10m (£8m) in add-ons. However, it has been reported by Portuguese outlet Record, that Sporting's board have made a U-turn and are now seeking a fee in the region of €80m (£67m), which is said to have infuriated Gyokeres to the point of threatening to strike. The striker is understood to be 'furious' with president Frederico Varandas, after discovering the news and has now told the club's bosses that he will never pull the Sporting shirt on again. Gyokeres has also removed any reference to Sporting on his Instagram account, having also got rid of any mention of Sweden and Nike. He has three years remaining on his contract in Lisbon, but he is determined to take on a new challenge after just two years at the club, where he won the league twice, and completed a domestic double this campaign. Rui Borges, Sporting manager, was asked about Gyokeres when attending an event on Tuesday to mark the 99th anniversary of provincial team Sport Clube de Mirandela - the club where his football journey began - but refused to give anything away. 'Gyokeres? Sporting's future begins on July 1st,' Borges told reporters. 'That's all I can say and today I'm here to, above all, salute this tribute that was paid to me. That's all. I'm on vacation, I'm not here to talk about that.' Gyokeres, who joined from Championship side Coventry in 2023, has scored a frankly astonishing 97 goals in 102 matches, with 54 of those strikes coming in the season just passed at a rate of over one goal per game. United are in contact with Sporting over the prolific Swedish striker and are 'exploring the conditions' of a potential deal. The 27-year-old has long been touted as United's top transfer target, with the Swede having previously worked under Ruben Amorim at Sporting, but still face competition from the Gunners, while Serie A giants Juventus are also said to be interested. The Red Devils have made initial contact with the Portuguese champions, but the financial impact of United's failure to qualify for European football looked to have severely damaged their hopes of securing the striker if they continue to hike the price. The Red Devils have already completed the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and they are also keen on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo who has indicated that he would like to move to Old Trafford. Cunha and Mbeumo could occupy the two No 10 roles in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation, but he still wants a new forward to lead the line and is eyeing a reunion with Gyokeres after they worked together at Sporting.

Viktor Gyokeres 'to go on strike' to force transfer after Sporting agreement
Viktor Gyokeres has been left frustrated by current club Sporting CP as he looks to depart amid interest from Arsenal and Manchester United as clubs around Europe eye the forward Viktor Gyokeres has threatened to go on strike after Sporting CP reneged on a gentleman's agreement over a transfer for the Swedish striker. Gyokeres is said to have informed the Portuguese club's hierarchy as much after they increased their transfer fee demands. The 27-year-old sharpshooter helped Sporting to a league and cup double after scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances in 2024/25. Gyokeres has developed an impressive reputation after moving to Lisbon from Coventry City. Reports in Portugal claim that Gyokeres has been left furious having already insisted he would depart the club this summer and will not play for the side again. Player and club had an agreement that Gyokeres would be allowed to leave for significantly less than his release clause. It appears Sporting have honoured that but they are now demanding more than the £50million plus £8.4m in add-ons Gyokeres expected. Record report the club have instead demanded £67m. The ex-Brighton ace has already turned down the prospect of a move to Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal saw a £55m offer rejected but Gyokeres has rebuffed an annual salary of £30m as he wants to continue to compete in Europe. Manchester United and Arsenal are among the sides linked with making a move for Gyokeres. The Gunners are the star forward's preference if he gets his pick of teams this summer. Sporting believe that Gyokeres' inclination would be to pick Arsenal and the Premier League over interest from Spain and Italy. A move to United meanwhile would see a reunion with Ruben Amorim with the Red Devils intent on bolstering their forward line having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Gunners' focus appears to be on getting a deal for Benjamin Sesko over the line over Gyokeres however. RB Leipzig director Marcel Schafer has already held discussions with Arsenal chief Andrea Berta over a move and talks are now beginning to gather pace. Gyokeres has been tight-lipped publicly on his plans. Asked about his future after Sporting's final game of the season, he said: 'Let's see. "It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Gyokeres has already removed all reference to Sporting from his Instagram bio. Though, he has also taken down mention of Sweden's national team and his sponsor, Nike.
