Researchers at INST Mohali develop filter using sunlight, AI to purify wastewater

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): A new water filter that harnesses sunlight, gentle vibrations, and artificial intelligence (AI) to both capture and eliminate pollutants may soon become a reality, said Ministry of Science and Technology on Tuesday.
Many industries, from textiles to pharmaceuticals, dump wastewater laced with harmful dyes like Methylene Blue and Congo Red into the environment. These pollutants do not just discolour water; they pose serious risks to ecosystems and human health, leading to skin problems, respiratory diseases, and more, Ministry said in a release.
Current solutions involve physical and chemical oxidation techniques, such as electrochemical, ozone, and related methods, which are energy-intensive and require expensive chemicals, making them hazardous for the environment, they added.
As per the statement, a team of researchers at the Institute of Nanoscience and Technology (INST) in Mohali, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has designed a 3D-printed scaffold made from biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), which is known for its piezo-photocatalytic properties.
Dr Aviru Basu coated this scaffold with a special material called Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO3), a catalyst known for breaking down pollutants when exposed to light and mechanical energy.
Ministry further said that this combination of Scaffold & Catalyst published in the journal Nano Energy (Elsevier) enables a powerful process called piezo-photocatalysis, where both sunlight and tiny vibrations help activate the catalyst. Even on cloudy days, the vibrations ensure that the cleaning does not stop. 'This is a smart solution to the limitations of traditional solar-powered purification.'
The scientists have also trained machine learning models -- using tools like Artificial Neural Networks -- to predict how well the system would perform under different conditions. The models achieved accuracy scores of up to 99%, helping the team fine-tune their system for maximum efficiency.
The hybrid system removed 98.9 per cent of Congo Red (CR) and 74.3 per cent of Methylene Blue (MB) from wastewater samples, surpassing current high-end treatment methods, release stated.
The innovation is biodegradable and eco-friendly, low-cost and reusable, avoids waste and excessive chemical use and is highly efficient and scalable. It is ready for adaptation in various industries and even remote communities, and is powered by renewables, harnessing sunlight and vibrations instead of fossil fuels, it added.
For making this possible, the researchers synthesised the BFO nanoparticle catalyst via a sol-gel method, developed 3D printing of PLA scaffolds, carried out coating and testing for dye degradation and developed Machine learning models to predict performance, ministry said in a release. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], August 14 (ANI): Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent, according to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank noted that AI can help financial institutions better understand customer behaviour, improve efficiency, and offer more personalised services at scale. It stated, "GenAI is poised to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent". The report said AI is increasingly being adopted across the financial services sector. This adoption is being driven by multiple needs, including enhancing customer experience, improving employee productivity, increasing revenue, reducing operational costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enabling the creation of new and innovative products. As per report, Generative AI, in particular, is playing a major role by using advanced analytics to help institutions understand customer behaviour, manage risks more effectively, and control costs. AI-powered alternative credit scoring models are also helping expand credit access to people who are underserved by the traditional banking system. RBI also stated that in India, where millions of people still do not have access to formal banking, AI can help assess the creditworthiness of potential borrowers using non-traditional data sources. These may include information such as utility bill payments, mobile usage patterns, GST filings, or e-commerce transactions. Such technology can help bring "thin-file" or "new-to-credit" customers into the formal financial system. The report also pointed out that AI chatbots are transforming customer service by handling routine queries around the clock, providing faster resolutions, and freeing up human staff for more complex tasks. Globally, the adoption of AI in financial services has been growing rapidly. The RBI report said that AI is expected to directly contribute to revenue growth for the industry in the coming years. The generative AI segment alone is projected to exceed ₹ 1.02 lakh crore (about USD 12 billion) by 2033, growing at an annual rate of 28-34 per cent. The findings highlighted that with proper use, AI can make banking in India more efficient, inclusive, and customer-friendly while driving strong growth for the sector. (ANI)

ANI file photo The Indian Army has deployed a three-tiered robotic counter-infiltration grid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar village of Jammu and Kashmir 's Kupwara district, ahead of the 79th Independence Day celebrations. Speaking to on Thursday, an Indian Army officer said that the troops are tasked with ensuring zero infiltration along the LoC. "Our task as the troops deployed on the ground is to establish, maintain and ensure zero infiltration and establish a zero infiltration grid in this area... We do that in three layers," the Army officer said. Describing the three-tier grid, he said that the first layer of defence is the surveillance equipment, including radars, thermal imaging sites, weapon and helmet-mounted sites, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). He said, "We use the plethora of surveillance equipment which has been given to us by the government of India, including radars, various thermal imaging sites, weapon and helmet-mounted sites, and UAVs." The Army official added that the second layer is the obstacle system, which includes mines. "Number two is the obstacle system, which we have incorporated into our defences. We have placed various types of mines and optical systems throughout the entire area of responsibility," he told ANI. The third layer is the army personnel on the ground involved in routine ambushes and patrolling, He said, "Number three is us, the men on the ground... We ensure that we send out routine ambushes and patrols to dominate the entire area either physically, by observation, or by fire." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, media personnel were granted a rare opportunity to witness the Indian Army's unwavering courage and dedication along the LoC in the remote regions of Sunderbani. According to a release, the commitment to continuously evolve, change and integrate exemplifies the Indian Army's dedication to maintain peak operational readiness. Technological advancements were also on display, such as the Smart Fence System that enhances border security and surveillance. Newly introduced equipment--including Quadcopters, Advanced Surveillance Tools, Bulletproof Vehicles, All-Terrain Vehicles, Modern Weapons, and Night Vision Sights -- was also displayed, underscoring the confidence in innovation & integration among our troops. India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025.
