Bukayo Saka lifts the lid on Thomas Tuchel's coaching style as Arsenal star prepares for first England outing under new Three Lions boss

Daily Mail5 hours ago

Bukayo Saka has had his first taste of life under Thomas Tuchel over the last few days, having missed the first England camp through injury, and has lifted the lid on what the new era is like.
The Arsenal star was absent on Saturday for the clash with Andorra in Spain, having suffered a slight strain in the Gunners' final game of the season, a 2-1 win over already-relegated Southampton.
However, he has now been told, along with the assembled media, that he will start Tuesday's friendly clash with Senegal, and finally get his chance to show Tuchel what he can do in an England shirt.
He comes in after the Three Lions received heavy backlash following a drab 1-0 win over Andorra, captain Harry Kane netting his record-extending 72nd England goal to prevent an embarrassing draw.
'After the last game of the season I had a little strain. Fair play to England, they managed me well. The manager left me out and said I will play tomorrow,' Saka said at England's press conference on Monday.
'I don't really like to compare [former boss Gareth Southgate and new manager Tuchel] if I'm honest, you know one person's qualities are always going to be overshadowed.
'If I just speak about Thomas himself, since I've come into the camp I guess he's been quite demanding and quite intense on the pitch and off the pitch he's more relaxed, nice guy, let's us enjoy ourselves and created a nice environment.'
England came under fire for their performance against Andorra, however it was their third successive clean sheet win to kick off the Tuchel era.
It may not be the goal fest that many might have expected, but it still represents a strong start for Tuchel, in his first international post with an almost completely new set of players he has never worked with.
The return of Saka, though, is a huge boost, with the winger one of the most dynamic, agile and adept dribblers in the game.
'I'm very excited, because I could see that he worked hard to come back from his injury. He had minor discomfort in his last match which worried me a bit,' Tuchel said of the Arsenal forward on Monday.
'He just had one training session with us, a full session and one half on Thursday and Friday.
'We decided in the end to protect him a little bit, to not let him play, to not take any risk. But he is happy, he trained with a smile yesterday. He will start tomorrow, he is a key player for us.'
Saka is one of three Arsenal players in the England squad, along with Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has had a real breakout campaign for Mikel Arteta's side.
Lewis-Skelly made his England debut against Albania at Wembley earlier this year, and within 20 minutes he had his first goal, opening the scoring in the first half.
Naturally, then, Saka was asked about his club and country team-mate and whether he can make the No 3 shirt his own for the 2026 World Cup.
'I don't know, I think it is early, but you know me, I can only say positive things about Myles. I have seen his journey as he has come through and he's a top talent.
'He's got a good mentality as well, lots of confidence and that's why I believe he can come here and play the way he does.
'Big credit to him, I just hope he keeps progressing and keeps improving. It's exciting to see what the future holds for him.'

Why Jude Bellingham missed England training ahead of Senegal friendly

Jude Bellingham was the only England player to miss training on Monday ahead of their international friendly against Senegal. The Three Lions maintained their 100 per cent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 win away to Andorra. Their 'boring' and uninspiring performance left a lot to be desired however, with Thomas Tuchel looking for major improvement on Tuesday night when they take on Senegal. In his pre-match press conference, Tuchel hinted he would heavily rotate his side and said he had no new injury issues to worry about. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins had pulled out of the squad before the Andorra game 'as a precaution due to a minor injury'. However, as the 25-man squad trained ahead of the friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham, there was one notable absentee in the form of Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham. The Football Association have since announced: '24 players are out training at St. George's Park this afternoon. 'Jude Bellingham is absent to attend a family funeral and will return to camp later today.' The 21-year-old started the win over Andorra but, like many of his teammates, struggled to make an impact and was replaced in the dying minutes by Morgan Gibbs-White. He will be available for selection against Senegal after which he will link back up with Real Madrid as they begin their Club World Cup campaign in the USA next week. It's been a big week for the Bellingham family with Jude's younger brother Jobe set to follow in his footsteps and sign for Borussia Dortmund. The 19-year-old played a key role in Sunderland's promotion campaign last season and was linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. But he'll be playing in Germany next season after a record-breaking transfer fee was agreed between the Black Cats and Dortmund. Read the full story here. Dropping a few hints about his line-up against the African giants, Tuchel confirmed that Bukayo Saka will start having not been able to play the Arsenal star before because of injury and fitness issues. More Trending 'Very excited [to have Saka available],' the German said in his pre-match press conference. 'I could see he worked hard to come back from his injury. He had this minor discomfort in the last match which worried me a bit. 'He had just one training session with us. A full session and one half training session. We decided to not let him play, to not take any risks. 'But he trains with a smile, he had [on Sunday] an amazing training session with a lot of quality. He will start. Of course he's a key player for us.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Spurs close in on Thomas Frank after making official approach to Brentford

Tottenham have made an official approach to Brentford over making Thomas Frank their next head coach, the PA news agency understands. Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite Europa League success, and quickly set their sights on Frank – who has gained admirers for his work over an impressive seven-year period at the west London club. Advertisement After positive initial talks over the weekend, confidence started to grow on Monday morning that Frank would be the man to replace Postecoglou and Tottenham have now entered discussions with Brentford, PA understands. Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 Frank's current deal with the Bees runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. Brentford are eager to hold out for Frank's release clause, but they have started talks with Spurs over a compensation package which would soften the blow of losing the highly-rated Dane. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Advertisement Poor domestic form during the 2024-25 season cost Postecoglou his job as the Spurs board was forced to make 'one of the toughest decisions' it has had to make in dismissing the head coach who ended a 17-year trophy drought. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' a club statement on Friday read. PA understands Tottenham have also relieved coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo of their duties. View this post on Instagram A post shared by West Bromwich Albion (@wba) Ryan Mason left his role as Spurs first-team coach last week to take over as West Brom boss, which opens the door for Frank to bring in some of his own staff – with current Brentford assistant Claus Norgaard a long-term ally. Advertisement PA understands another departure from Spurs this summer will be Scott Munn, who was made chief football officer at the club in 2023. Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has remained in post and is set to renew allegiances with compatriot Frank. Frank and Lange worked together at Danish club Lyngby before they both made their marks in the Premier League. Lange attempted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022 when he worked at the midlands outfit. Advertisement Former Brondby boss Frank has developed a strong reputation in English football since he took over Brentford, with his tactical nous and man-management skills often lauded by rival managers and pundits. After Frank guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, he quickly enabled them to compete strongly in the Premier League despite a modest budget and has been linked to a number of high-profile vacancies in recent years.
