Researchers from top AI labs including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic warn they may be losing the ability to understand advanced AI models

Yahoo22-07-2025
A group of 40 AI researchers, including contributors from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, and Anthropic, are sounding the alarm on the growing opacity of advanced AI reasoning models. In a new paper, the authors urge developers to prioritize research into 'chain-of-thought' (CoT) processes, which provide a rare window into how AI systems make decisions. They are warning that as models become more advanced, this visibility could vanish.
AI researchers from leading labs are warning that they could soon lose the ability to understand advanced AI reasoning models.
In a position paper published last week, 40 researchers, including those from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Meta, called for more investigation into AI reasoning models' 'chain-of-thought' process. Dan Hendrycks, an xAI safety advisor, is also listed among the authors.
The 'chain-of-thought' process, which is visible in reasoning models such as OpenAI's o1 and DeepSeek's R1, allows users and researchers to monitor an AI model's 'thinking' or 'reasoning' process, illustrating how it decides on an action or answer and providing a certain transparency into the inner workings of advanced models.
The researchers said that allowing these AI systems to ''think' in human language offers a unique opportunity for AI safety,' as they can be monitored for the 'intent to misbehave.' However, they warn that there is 'no guarantee that the current degree of visibility will persist' as models continue to advance.
The paper highlights that experts don't fully understand why these models use CoT or how long they'll keep doing so. The authors urged AI developers to keep a closer watch on chain-of-thought reasoning, suggesting its traceability could eventually serve as a built-in safety mechanism.
'Like all other known AI oversight methods, CoT [chain-of-thought] monitoring is imperfect and allows some misbehavior to go unnoticed. Nevertheless, it shows promise, and we recommend further research into CoT monitorability and investment in CoT monitoring alongside existing safety methods,' the researchers wrote.
'CoT monitoring presents a valuable addition to safety measures for frontier AI, offering a rare glimpse into how AI agents make decisions. Yet, there is no guarantee that the current degree of visibility will persist. We encourage the research community and frontier AI developers to make the best use of CoT monitorability and study how it can be preserved,' they added.
The paper has been endorsed by major figures, including OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton.
Reasoning Models
AI reasoning models are a type of AI model designed to simulate or replicate human-like reasoning—such as the ability to draw conclusions, make decisions, or solve problems based on information, logic, or learned patterns. Advancing AI reasoning has been viewed as a key to AI progress among major tech companies, with most now investing in building and scaling these models.
OpenAI publicly released a preview of the first AI reasoning model, o1, in September 2024, with competitors like xAI and Google following close behind.
However, there are still a lot of questions about how these advanced models are actually working. Some research has suggested that reasoning models may even be misleading users through their chain-of-thought processes.
Despite making big leaps in performance over the past year, AI labs still know surprisingly little about how reasoning actually unfolds inside their models. While outputs have improved, the inner workings of advanced models risk becoming increasingly opaque, raising safety and control concerns.

Magnitude Of Roblox's Q2 Beat Unexpected, Says Analyst

Roblox Corp (NYSE:RBLX) is experiencing a significant market shift, with second-quarter bookings and user engagement metrics signaling a robust recovery, despite a mixed financial report. The gaming platform, propelled by viral game successes and expanding reach, is seeing a positive reevaluation of its growth outlook. Following the release of its quarterly results, Wall Street analysts have revised their price forecasts upward. Wedbush's Alicia Reese raised her forecast from $142 to $165, maintaining an Outperform Bernie McTernan increased his forecast from $79 to $159, and Bank of America Securities' Omar Dessouky lifted his forecast from $133 to $159. Reese, viewing Roblox as the most compelling growth story in gaming, highlighted the company's record-breaking second-quarter performance. Bookings surged 50% year-over-year to $1.44 billion, far exceeding her $1.19 billion estimate and the consensus estimate of $1.24 billion. Adjusted EBITDA rose 180% to $205 million, slightly surpassing guidance but missing consensus. Daily active users hit 111.8 million, above her forecast of 92.8 million, and engagement soared to 27.8 billion hours, surpassing the estimated 22.2 billion. Monetization also exceeded expectations, with average bookings per user at $12.86. Looking ahead, Reese raised her fiscal 2025 forecast and projects double-digit growth through 2027, with a return to 20% year-over-year growth after tough comparisons in 2026. She expects the third quarter to benefit from multiple viral games, suggesting operating leverage and revenue per engineer will grow as the platform scales. McTernan, following a strong second-quarter performance, raised his 2025 and 2026 adjusted EBITDA estimates by 21% and 45%, respectively. He sees Roblox's growth potential as driven by AI leadership and a strong pipeline of viral games. Bookings rose 51% year-over-year, up from 31% in the prior quarter, fueled by five experiences reaching over 10 million daily active users. McTernan raised his bookings estimates by 11% for 2025 and 23% for 2026, with a corresponding boost to EBITDA. His base case assumes Roblox will hit $20 billion in bookings by 2031, though his bull case expects this milestone one to two years earlier, supported by a 40% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in bookings and nearly 60% CAGR in EBITDA. McTernan also sees growth from advertising and margin expansion in 2026. Dessouky of Bank of America also increased his price forecast following the company's quarterly beat, particularly noting the 51% year-over-year surge in bookings. He said the magnitude of the second quarter beat was unexpected. Growth was driven not only by the hit title Grow a Garden but also by a 90% increase in Tier 2 games. Daily active users grew 41% year-over-year, suggesting that Roblox is deepening its penetration into the 13+ demographic and alleviating concerns of market saturation. Operating expenses related to infrastructure and trust & safety (IT&S) rose $18 million sequentially, but Dessouky saw this as a positive sign, noting a 10% drop in cost per engagement hour. Guidance for the third quarter also exceeded expectations, with bookings growth forecasted at 41%, compared to BofA's 23% estimate. Dessouky raised his full-year 2025 bookings estimate to $6.06 billion and EBITDA to $1.41 billion, up from $5.59 billion and $1.24 billion, respectively. Despite potential challenges from new leadership and tough comps in 2026, he expects the company to reaffirm its +20% year-over-year growth forecast. He also projects margin expansion of 100 basis points in 2025 and over 300 basis points in 2026–27. Price Action: RBLX stock is trading lower by 7.57% to $127.36 at last check Friday. Is Roku Stock the Rodney Dangerfield of Streaming?

Key Points Roku reported better-than-expected second-quarter numbers after Thursday's market close. The shares moved lower despite an earlier-than-expected profitable turn and raised guidance. Roku has now moved lower after earnings in four of the past five quarters, but it's still working out for investors. 10 stocks we like better than Roku › There were a lot of good things in Roku's (NASDAQ: ROKU) financial update on Thursday afternoon. The company that ushered in the era of streaming video through your TV topped its earlier revenue guidance. It surprised the market with its first profitable quarter in more than three years. Roku also raised its full-year guidance across the board. It apparently wasn't enough. Roku stock opened lower on Friday morning. At least 10 analysts would go on to jack up their price targets on the stock, from as little as $1 to as high as $26. It didn't matter. There's still a silver lining to the initial downtick in the shares. I'll get to that, but first let's dig into the second-quarter results. No buffering or blubbering this time around Expectations were modest heading into the results that were announced shortly after Thursday's market close. Roku's guidance established three months ago called for $1.07 billion in revenue, a 10.5% advance. This was seen as a disappointing outlook at the time. Roku had posted double-digit top-line jumps in each of previous eight quarters. This would stretch the streak to nine, but it would be the weakest revenue move in the run. Roku fared a lot better than expected on that front. Roku's $1.11 billion in revenue is a nearly 15% increase. An 18% surge in platform revenue -- its high-margin business accounting for 88% of the business -- was able to overcome a 6% decline in device sales. A slowdown in hardware to expand its audience may be seen as a negative, but this was also the first time in more than a year that Roku's devices business didn't crank out a negative gross profit. The bottom line is the real head turner. Roku's outlook in May was calling for a $25 million net loss for the quarter, but its full-year guidance implied that the streaming video pioneer would be profitable in the second half of the year. Investors would simply have to bear with a rough second quarter, and a projected $22 million profit in the second half would mean a turnaround likely in the third, or, if not, in the fourth quarter. Roku got there sooner than expected, as I predicted earlier this week. Roku scored positive net income of $10.5 million for the three months heading in June. It got there despite a sequential and year-over-year dip in gross margin for its platform revenue, bailed out by the gross margin improvement on the hardware side. It was a strong report. Roku went four-for-four in exceeding all four of the metrics its offers up as guidance. It also raised its outlook for all four metrics, by more than just the degree of the second-quarter beats. It's a report that should be applauded, but don't let the market's initial reaction dissuade you. Investors have been here before. It's been turning out just fine in the long run. I promised you a silver lining Take a look at Roku's stock chart through Thursday's close. The stock is up more than 50% over the past year. Most investors would take that return, but take a closer look at the purple circles with the letter "E" inside. That is when Roku announced quarterly earnings results. Roku shares moved lower the day after offering up fresh financials in three of the four previous quarters. The one time it did move higher -- the fourth quarter of 2024 -- it was trading lower a few days later and substantially lower a few weeks after. Barring a recovery as Friday plays out, this will be the fourth time in the last five quarters that Roku takes a substantial hit the day after earnings. It has bounced back before. Recent history suggests it will do the same this time. Roku can't seem to get the market's respect as a growth stock, just as funnyman Rodney Dangerfield used to say in his most popular catchphrase. The iconic comedian still got the last laugh. Roku seems to play it that way, too. Should you invest $1,000 in Roku right now?
