Blue Jays' Max Scherzer expected to come off the IL and start on Wednesday at Cleveland
TORONTO — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday.
'He's ready to go,' Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches.
Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning.
'Really, really excited to have him back,' Schneider said. 'That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week.'
At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo.
The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester.
The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb.
Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29.
He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024.
Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017.
Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 467 games, including 458 starts. He has 3,408 strikeouts in 2,881 innings.

Travis Hunter signs rookie contract with Jaguars, who make separate DB and WR announcements
It's official. Travis Hunter is a Jacksonville Jaguar. The two-way star has signed his rookie contract. The Jaguars announced the deal twice on Sunday — with one post saying they had signed DB Travis Hunter and another saying they had signed WR Travis Hunter. Advertisement Only certain details of the contract were negotiable. Per the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, rookie contract values are predetermined based on draft slot. As the No. 2 pick in April's draft, Hunter is due $46.65 million that is fully guaranteed over four years. The Jaguars will have a fifth-year option. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Hunter will receive his entire $30.57 million signing bonus up front. According to the report, Hunter is the first non-quarterback who wasn't drafted first overall to negotiate payment of his entire signing bonus at the front end of his contract. There was little doubt the contract would be signed. But Hunter's signature ends a delay in getting a deal done that extended through OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Now the specter of a holdout has been removed ahead of Jaguars training camp, which starts on July 19 when Hunter and his fellow rookies are due to report. Hunter was a participant in OTAs and in minicamp, critical sessions for rookies to get acclimated to the NFL and their new teammates. The Jaguars traded up from the fifth pick with the Cleveland Browns for the No. 2 selection they used to draft Hunter. In addition to the No. 5 pick, they parted with their first round-selection in 2026 and a second-round pick in April in the deal to secure Hunter. The Browns used the second-round pick from Jacksonville to select Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins. How will the Jaguars use Travis Hunter? A prospect with All-Pro upside at wide receiver and cornerback, it's not yet clear just how the Jaguars will deploy Hunter. But he'll almost certainly get significant run at wide receiver as the Jaguars look to capitalize on the upside of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 draft. Advertisement Lawrence made a Pro Bowl in his second season, but has largely failed to deliver on his predraft hype as a can't-miss quarterback prospect and franchise savior. Jacksonville made the playoffs in 2022 but has finished 9-8 and 4-13 in subsequent seasons that didn't result in a postseason berth. Lawrence didn't make the Pro Bowl in either season. With Hunter's talents at his disposal, pressure will be further increased on Lawrence to deliver in his fifth NFL season and return Jacksonville to postseason contention.

Rays begin ‘exclusive discussions' to possibly sell team to group led by Florida developer
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly in the process of finding a new buyer for the team. A report by Sportico cited multiple unnamed sources that the Rays were negotiating a deal to sell the team to a group led by home developer and UF Board of Trustees member, Patrick Zalupski of Ponte Vedra Beach. Advertisement In a statement to WFLA News Channel 8, the Rays confirmed the negotiations. 'The Tampa Bay Rays announced that the team has recently commenced exclusive discussions with a group led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove, Ken Babby and prominent Tampa Bay investors concerning a possible sale of the team. This came after the Rays' deal to build a new stadium at Tropicana Field and help redevelop the Gas Plant District fell through due to the damage caused by Hurricane Milton. 'I think it's really up to the new owners where they want the stadium,' Latvala said. 'From what I've heard, it's probably on the Tampa side. I don't want to speak for them.'
