The family of an Irish woman among eight people who were kidnapped from an orphanage near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince yesterday has said they are 'absolutely devastated' by the news.
Westport native Gena Heraty is a charity worker overseeing the Sainte-Helene orphanage operated by humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters), AFP reports.
Ms Heraty has been living in Haiti for 32 years, running the orphanage which accommodates up to 270 children.
'The situation is evolving and deeply worrying. We are working closely with NPFS in Haiti and Ireland, the Irish Government, and international partners who are doing everything possible to ensure the safe and immediate release of Gena and her colleagues,' her family said.

'NPFS Haiti is working actively to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of all the children and workers at the orphanage in Kenscoff during this challenging time. We ask that you keep Gena and her colleagues in your hearts as we pray for their safe return.
'Out of respect for the ongoing efforts and for Gena's safety, we are not in a position to share further details at this time,' the family statement read.
A three-year-old child and other orphanage workers have also been taken, according to the mayor of the local commune. It was first reported that nine were kidnapped, this has been revised to eight.
"The attackers broke into the orphanage around 3:30am without opening fire," said the mayor of Kenscoff, Masillon Jean, calling it a "planned act".
"They broke through a wall to enter the property before heading to the building where the director was staying, leaving with nine hostages."
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is aware of Ms Heraty's case and is providing consular assistance.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris said he has spoken to the family of Gena Heraty and said her kidnapping is 'deeply worrying'.
Speaking today, the Tánaiste said: 'The kidnapping of Irish citizen Gena Heraty, along with seven of her colleagues and a three-year-old child from the grounds of an orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, is deeply worrying.
'Gena has served the people of Haiti for over 30 years.
'She has dedicated her life to supporting the most vulnerable people in Haiti and it is imperative that she is released immediately.
'This morning, I had a good conversation with Gena's sister, Noreen, and I assured her that all is being done to ensure Gena's release.
'My Department is in close contact with the Heraty family, local authorities and Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs, the organisation Gena works for. The country's two ambassadors are also in close contact.
"We will continue to leave no stone unturned to ensure Gena and her colleagues are released.'
In a statement published on Sunday, NPH said that seven staff members and one youth were taken from its home for vulnerable and at risk children in Kenscoff.
The organisation confirmed that one of the staff members taken is a foreigner, whose identity and nationality will not be revealed for security reasons. NPH also said that two hospitals it runs in Haiti will be closed until the people taken from its orphanage have been safely released.
Gangs control 90pc of Haiti's capital, according to the United Nations, and in recent months they have been launching attacks on previously peaceful communities.
More than 5,600 people were reported killed in Haiti last year, with gang violence leaving more than 1 million people homeless in recent years, according to the UN. The UN recorded 185 victims of kidnapping in Haiti between April and June of this year, and said that gangs commit this crime to 'subjugate' people in areas under their control.
The Irish Independent previously spoke with Ms Heraty in 2013 after she was attacked and the then mayor was killed at an orphanage in Kenscoff in a robbery.
Ms Heraty is director of the special needs programme at the orphanage.
This article was amended on August 4, 2025, to reflect eight people in total were kidnapped, rather than the initial provided figure of nine.

Gardaí launch murder investigation into death of Tipperary man Ian Walsh (49)

Ian Walsh (49) was discovered at a property in Carrick-on-Suir in south Tipperary early on Monday morning when family members and neighbours went to check on him after becoming concerned for his welfare. Gardaí are now treating the death of Mr Walsh as murder following the results of a post mortem examination at University Hospital Waterford (UHW). Mr Walsh is understood to have suffered fatal stab injuries after apparently being confronted at his home sometime over last weekend. Initial indications are that the rail enthusiast was the victim of a particularly brutal attack. There was no indication of a burglary or attempted break-in at the property. Mr Walsh had not been seen locally for two or three days. He routinely met with family and friends every Sunday - and they became concerned when they were unable to contact him despite repeated attempts. The 49 year old was found unresponsive with visible marks and injuries to his body in a house off Cregg Road on the northeastern section of Carrick-on-Suir at 3am on Monday. Gardaí were immediately alerted and attended the scene. Paramedics and a local GP were also notified. However, Mr Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transferred to UHW. It is feared he may have lain dead inside the property for some time before being discovered. The Office of the State Pathologist was notified and a post mortem examination was conducted at UHW by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Yvonne McCarthy. "Preliminary results have been provided to the investigation team. These details are not being released for operational reasons. Following the post-mortem, An Garda Síochána has now commenced a murder investigation," a garda spokesperson confirmed. Sources indicated that Mr Walsh died from stab injuries to his torso. He was discovered lying in a pool of blood in a ground floor room at the property. The deceased lived at the house - just off the Callan Road in Carrick-on-Suir - for a number of years. His family also live in the Carrick-on-Suir area. Mr Walsh worked for Iarnród Éireann for over 30 years. Over recent times, he had qualified as a bus driver and was working part-time in the coach business in the south east. He had worked as a signaller at Kent Station in Cork. Mr Walsh was a lifelong rail enthusiast and boasted numerous friends within Irish Rail and Irish railway societies. Friends hailed him as one of the most knowledgeable officials in respect of Ireland's rail heritage - and how to use the rail network for tour groups. Locals expressed shock at his death - and hailed him as someone who was known and respected in rail circles from Dublin to Cork and Waterford. He was also very involved in sports and was said locally to be a keen cyclist and walker, careful to maintain his own fitness. The Garda Technical Bureau conducted a full forensic examination of the property in a bid to garner clues as to the identity of the attacker. Door-to-door inquiries are being conducted to determine the last known movements of Mr Walsh. Officers are also keen to determine if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious in the area over the previous 76 hours. Gardaí are also checking CCTV security camera footage from residential properties and businesses in the town and area to determine any movements to and from Cregg Road. "Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information related to this incident to come forward, including any road users who were in the area of Cregg Road, Carrick-On-Suir, Co Tipperary, between 8pm on Friday August 1 2025 and 3.30am on Monday August 4 2025." "Additionally, anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and was traveling in the area at the time is asked to make it available to Gardaí." "Anyone with any information is asked to contact Clonmel Garda Station on (052) 617 7640, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station." Tributes have been paid to Mr Walsh by rail and tourism groups shocked at news of his death. Iarnród Éireann said they were shocked at his death. "All of us in Iarnród Éireann are shocked and saddened at Ian's passing," a company spokesperson said. "Ian was a well known and popular colleague across the company, both in his working life in roles from catering to signalling, and for his passion for railway and transport tourism and heritage." "Our thoughts are with his family, and his friends in the railway and beyond, at this difficult time." Táilte Tours said Mr Walsh had been of enormous support to them over the years - and had run several rail heritage tours of his own. "It is with great sadness that the Táilte Tours team has learnt of the passing of Ian Walsh, signaller at Cork station and a huge supporter of our rail tour operation," the tour group posted on social media. "Ian ran five rail tours of his own over the course of the mid to late 2000s, and was very much a pioneer in 'outside the box' tours in Ireland, starting them from locations such as Waterford and Limerick, in an era when tours were generally based in Dublin or Belfast." "He was more than happy to pass his experience and expertise on when we started operations a few years ago; for those of who enjoyed the 'surprise' rare track moves on our Cork-based rail tours, you can thank Ian, who went far beyond the extra mile to ensure our operations went off without a hitch." "He had a wonderful knowledge of the Iarnród Éireann system and its people, and had also developed a passion for Bus Éireann operations, diligently recording the last runs on several rural routes in the south east as they disappeared, quickly becoming a friend to bus drivers in the Cork and Waterford areas."

Russian war channels suggest sabotage groups will seek to capture the major city, which is close to the front-line - a claim strongly disputed by Ukraine. Separate footage shows Shahed-2 drones striking Dnipropetrovsk region, where four were injured including a 69-year-old woman. Putin's forces also killed at least three Ukrainians in Nikopol, including Danylo Khizhnyak, a 23-year-old firsts responder. Separately, the Russians killed a 62-year-old civilian woman in Huliaipole, near the frontline in Zaporizhzhia region. Moscow released visuals of this week's joint war games with China - Maritime Interaction-2025 - in which the two repressive states conducted artillery combat on a 'simulated enemy' in a show of strength to the West. The savage onslaught comes amid reports of a planned meeting between Trump and Putin to discuss an end to the war. Russia vows 'no limits' on nuke missiles in chilling warning to West as Putin throws down gauntlet for Cold War showdown Both Putin and Zelensky have yet to make a response about the meeting that could mark the beginning of the end of Putin's invasion. When asked if he thought Putin was serious about the talks, Trump told reporters: 'Can't answer the question yet. I'll tell you in a matter of weeks, maybe less. But we made a lot of progress.' Meanwhile he vowed more sanctions against countries trading oil with Russia, so funding the Putin war machine. 'We did it with India, we're doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China,' said Trump. Trump said a face to face encounter with Putin could come by next week. 'There's a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon,' he said. But he cautioned the progress made was not a 'breakthrough" with his secretary of state Marco Rubio insisting many obstacles still needed to be overcome. 8 Dozens have been killed in Vlad's latest attacks Credit: East2West 8 Russia struck the Dnipropetrovsk region in Ukraine Credit: East2West 8 An explosion in the Dnipropetrovsk region in Ukraine Credit: East2West Ukraine sought to increase pressure on Putin with precision strikes on key military and strategic targets in overnight action. Reports said the strike was against military unit 61661. A spectacular and 'massive' inferno was burning at Afipsky Refinery in the same region after 6am explosions which 'rocked the facility, with flames lighting up the sky'. It is one of the largest refineries in southern Russia. Ukraine also targeted air defence units near Kerch in occupied Crimea, according to reports. And they hit the Surovikino railway station triggering a fire in Volgograd region, where a temporary airport closure was enforced. This was another in a series of recent strikes aimed at disrupting Putin's rail transport system, especially involving military cargoes. Earlier, unmanned boats were reported to be attacking key port Novorossiysk, in Krasnodar region.
