Elmira, N.Y. (WETM)- Happy Meteorology Monday! Spring in the Twin Tiers usually brings a transition from wintry weather to more frequent severe weather patterns. On this week's edition of Meteorology Monday, 18 Storm Team Meteorologist Alivia Colon talks about a form of frozen precipitation that should not be mistaken for your usual wintry weather: hail.
Meteorology Monday: Thunderstorm safety
When we talk about frozen precipitation in the winter, we are usually talking about snow, sleet, and freezing rain, which depend on the temperature in different layers of the atmosphere. However, when we talk about hail, we are talking about supercooled water droplets within a thunderstorm that get carried up and down through thunderstorm updrafts. As they lift and fall between the freezing layer within a storm, layers of ice form around the core.When the hailstone weighs more than the force of the updraft, the stone falls as hail. Depending on the strength of these updrafts, you can get hailstones as big as softballs and CDs.

Experts warn of cold water dangers during hot weather this weekend
As temperatures rise this weekend and early next week, jumping into bodies of water can be tempting. Sunday and Monday will be the hottest days in the Puget Sound area, ranging from the 80s to the low-90s, but experts advise people to swim with caution. Although it will be hot outside, the water will still be dangerously cold, according to a Friday news release from the National Weather Service's Seattle office. Surface-level water may seem warm, but the real risk lies deeper in the water, experts warn. This early in the year, bodies of water aren't necessarily warm enough to swim safely. 'We're still early in the season and waters are still running cold and fast and we've already had cold water-related fatalities this year,' the news release said. A Facebook post from East Pierce Fire & Rescue on Friday urged caution, because even experienced swimmers can lose muscle control. 'Chattering teeth, shivering, or blue lips when swimming?' the post said. 'Those are reminders to get out of the water and rewarm.' Those planning to enjoy the water this weekend should wear a life vest, the post said. After Monday, National Weather Service forecasters expect cooler weather.

Local reporter Ariana Bos caught in hailstorm
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — While KREX reporter Ariana Bos was reporting on a different event on Friday evening, she got caught up in the hailstorm that swept through Grand Junction. Fortunately, Bos was saved from the rain and hail by another KREX reporter, Titus Cleveland, and her husband, Maartin Bos. Ariana Bos was uninjured. The aftermath of the hailstorm left dents in cars, leaves and trees on the ground, and flooding in some areas of Mesa County. Emergency services responded to calls throughout the storm.
