Sundowns boss expects to win the Champions League
Sunday evening will witness Mamelodi Sundowns' biggest match since the CAF Champions League final in 2016. The occasion will be in Cairo, Egypt, against Pyramids FC.
Following the first leg tie last weekend, Sunday's second leg will start at 1-1. Lucas Ribeiro broke the deadlock after 54 minutes before Pyramids' Walid El Karti equalised during 90 minutes of stoppage time.
Speaking to the media ahead of the second leg final, Sundowns' chairman, Tlhopane 'Tlhopie' Motsepe, revealed that Kabo Yellow expect nothing less than a win for Abafana BaStyle on Sunday.
'That's what we want, to go there as African champions,' Motsepe said via Sowetan . Mamelodi Sundowns team vs Raja Casablanca. Image: @safootclassics/X
'We have a big chance. Being African champions again is something we've longed for. We are one step away from achieving it.
'If we were to rewind to the start of the season and you asked if we would love to be in this position – one game away from the CAF Champions League title – we would take it. It's what we plan for every season,' the Sundowns boss added.
'The energy in the group is great and that's good considering the coach didn't have a preseason with us.
'He didn't get to pick the players he wants, or instil his methods. But to now be in the final with the players he found there is testament to what he's achieved,' the chairman concluded.

Banyana Banyana win tri-series with a perfect record ahead of Wafcon
Jermaine Seoposenwe scored for Banyana Banyana against Zambia on Tuesday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix Jermaine Seoposenwe starred for Banyana Banyana, who pulled off a clean sweep in the Cosafa Tri-Nations series in their preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. Seoposenwe scored the winner in the 2-0 win over Zambia in the final game of the series at Lucas Masterpieces Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Mexico-based striker had also scored a brace in the 3-2 win over Botswana in their opener, as they finished the series with a perfect record on home soil. Next Stay Close ✕ Seoposenwe's goal against the Copper Queens came late in the second half, as she capitalised from a poor clearance at the back, before slotting home from close-range. Bongeka Gamede had put the defending African champions in the driving seat in the 74th minute, as she rattled the roof of the net with a thunderbolt free-kick. On paper, it was the perfect day in the office for Desiree Ellis and her troops, but the coach will know that Banyana's work is still cut out for them ahead of Wafcon next month. The Copper Queens' talisman Barbra Banda had many openings in this game, especially in the first half. She only lacked support, which could have punished Banyana. So, given there'll be no room for error at Wafcon, Banyana need to be at their best in defence ... if they are to plug their shortcomings. What was also disappointing about Banyana's defence is that they had their regular defence, including central defender Bambanai Mbane and Lebohang Ramalepe. The latter seemingly forgot her role as a defender early on, as she was mostly high up the field, instead of keeping Banyana's shape in defence. Even with her adding numbers up-front, Seoponsenwe and Amogelang Motau were still not clinical in the early stages of the match. Ramalepe was fully converted to a forward in the second half and that swung the tide in Banyana's favour, as Gamede and Seoposenwe chipped in with their all important goals. Ellis will put her head on the block in the next few weeks and announce her final squad for Wafcon as she's already naming the preliminary squad. Alexander Bublik keeps rolling at French Open
Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik continued his winning run at the French Open by defeating Great Britain's Jack Draper 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 on Court Suzanne Lenglen at Roland-Garros on Monday. When Bublik was asked after the match what he thought the key was to his victory, he wasn't completely sure. 'I don't know, to be honest. I left it all out there. You know, I have certain skill set to play tennis, and it worked marvellously today. '100% one of the best days of my life and one of the best matches I have ever played in my life. That was as simple as that.' Bublik's results this year on clay are better than all his previous three years' results combined. He was asked what he think has changed. 'Maybe this is the first year I haven't complained about playing on clay, as I don't have a lot of options because I was dropping a lot in the rankings.' Bublik was up front when talking about his philosophy of how he lives his life. 'I still do the exact minimum and maximum at the same time in order to be the player I am, to be in the position I am, and I will continue with this path, because I think I prioritise tennis and the life in equal ways.' 'So, for me it's a 50/50 relationship. So, it's not like tennis takes 90, and then it's okay. If I can't walk at the age of 40, it's okay. No, it's not. So, for me it's finding the balance.' Bublik values being healthy over possibly compromising his health by pushing his body beyond its limits. 'It's doing necessarily what I have to do in order to be able to compete against the top of the game, which I showcased every season I played in the past six, seven years, but will I put my health on the line? No.' Bublik outlined that he is willing to work hard but with a balanced approach. 'There is no way around hard work. Don't get me wrong. I work hard, but on my terms, you know. I do what I'm capable of doing with my body, but I will not push through a knee injury in order to have, you know, a certain chance to win a certain match. So, for me, there is no way around hard work.' Apart from prioritising his health, Bublik also prioritises his family. 'But as I said, I prioritise the health and my lifestyle, as well, because I have a family and I'm a father, and I have to do the father duties. This is a 50/50 balance.' It appears that Bublik's authentic nature is beginning to win over more and more fans at this year's French Open. There is more to Bublik than meets the eye. Next up for Bublik is a quarter-final clash against world No 1 Jannik Sinner on Wednesday. Birthday girl Kgothatso Montjane wins Round 1 match at Roland-Garros
South African star Kgothatso Montjane won her first round wheelchair match against Chile's Macarena Cabrillana 6-3, 6-3 in windy conditions on court 11 at Roland-Garros on Tuesday. The win coincided with Montjane's 39th birthday. She mentioned that she was very chuffed when arriving at Roland-Garros this morning, she was asked if she was competing in the junior event! Prior to the commencement of the match, Kgothatso Montjane had some equipment issues with a broken strap on her wheelchair. It was repaired and then the repairs had to be redone. 'It's time for a new chair. This one is six-years-old. It might be tired.' Thankfully, the chair issues did not impact Montjane's performance, although there were some anxious moments prior to the match. 'I was just hopeful that they (organisers) would get me going.' There were potential issues with Montjane not being able to stay in her chair if the strap was not able to be repaired. 'If the strap was unable to be repaired, it would have made it challenging for the umpire as the rules state that I must be in the chair at all times.' Regarding her win, Montjane was not totally satisfied with her performance. 'It was a good win, but I honestly feel like it could have been better. 'I made the match difficult for myself. I felt like that I didn't use the court really well. 'I dropped quite a lot of balls short.' There were some positives for Montjane. 'However, I played well under pressure. After taking the lead in the first set, I felt like I should have taken control. 'I'm glad I managed to seal it up. 'It could be better. I'm not happy with the complete play.' Kgothatso Montjane described wanting more patience on her opponents serve. 'I was moving in too early, I had to wait and then I killed the momentum. 'I like it more when my opponent serves faster, and the ball has more energy. 'Otherwise, I have to create the energy myself.' Montjane outlined some areas of improvement she would like for her next match. 'I want to be more consistent, hit with more depth, and put more speed on the ball. I want more topspin with my forehand so that I don't continue to hit the balls long.' The conditions on court 11 consisted of a strong, swirling wind. 'The wind made it hard for my ball toss and I found it tricky to work out which way that the wind was blowing.' Kgothatso Montjane admitted that she was unlikely to celebrate her birthday as she is currently battling a neck injury as a result 'of playing for the last three weeks.' 'All I want to do is shower, get my neck worked on, and get as much rest as I can.' Montjane revealed that she supports Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United. Kaizer Chiefs finished ninth in the recently-concluded Betway Premiership, while Manchester United fared even worse, ending 15th in the English Premier League. Kgothatso Montjane will need to show as much determination as it took supporting those teams this season when she next plays! Montjane will next be up against fourth seed Ziying Wang of China in the quarter-finals.
