Mangal Dhillon rose to fame in films and TV with Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, yet walked away at his peak, seeking peace in spirituality and service.
Whenever Mangal Dhillon appeared on screen, audiences were instantly drawn to his powerful baritone and dignified presence. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was one of television's most respected stars and a familiar face in Hindi cinema, sharing screens with icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Anil Kapoor, and Sridevi. Yet, at the peak of his success, Dhillon shocked many by stepping away from the limelight, trading stardom for a quieter path rooted in faith and service.
Born on June 18, 1957, in Punjab's Wander Jatana village, Mangal was a bright child whose father envisioned a traditional career in law or administration. But his heart was always set on the arts. After excelling in school plays, he pursued higher education at Muktsar Government College before completing a post-graduate diploma in acting at Panjab University, where he was awarded a prestigious Gold Medal for performance.
Breakthrough In Television And Films
Dhillon's first screen break came with Doordarshan's anthology series Katha Sagar. But it was Ramesh Sippy's legendary show Buniyaad that catapulted him to fame. His character, Lubhaya Ram, resonated deeply with viewers, cementing him as one of television's most promising talents. He went on to deliver memorable performances in Junoon, The Great Maratha, and Panther, where his role as Sumer Rajvansh became widely admired.
The transition to films was inevitable. His debut in Rakesh Roshan's Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), opposite Rekha and Kabir Bedi, showcased his screen presence. He followed it with Zakhmi Aurat, Vishwatma, and Kumar Shahani's art-house gem Khayal Gatha. Mangal also wrote the screenplay for Heer Ranjha, starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, though the film failed commercially. Despite occasional setbacks, he became one of the highest-paid actors on television and a dependable face in cinema.
Walking Away From Fame
Even while enjoying popularity, Dhillon often spoke about feeling spiritually unsettled. Fame, glamour, and success did not satisfy his inner quest. In 1999, he directed the documentary Khalsa, focusing on Guru Gobind Singh's teachings. The overwhelming response reaffirmed his decision to step away from acting and dedicate his life to faith, community service, and humanitarian projects.
His final television role was as Emperor Akbar in Noorjahan (2000), and his last film appearance came in Feroz Khan's Janasheen (2003). After leaving mainstream entertainment, Dhillon immersed himself in creating Sikh documentaries and later launched a YouTube channel to share motivational messages and guidance.
In his later years, he battled cancer before passing away in 2023. Remembering him, Dr. Balbir Shah of DMCH Ludhiana shared: 'He used to bring patients to our nursing home as he cared deeply for others' health. He often spoke about drug abuse, farmers' struggles, and corruption. He entertained us with his film dialogues, but what impressed me most was his simplicity."
Mangal Dhillon remains a reminder that true legacy lies not only in fame but in the values one lives by. His journey from stardom to spiritual pursuit continues to inspire many who seek deeper meaning beyond worldly success.

Shah Rukh Khan says son Aryan Khan ‘doesn't tell me anything' as he asks Netflix for update on Ba***ds of Bollywood

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan is all set to make his Bollywood debut as a director with the series Ba***ds of Bollywood. In February, SRK unveiled the project at a Netflix event, and since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting an update on the series. During an AMA session on X (formerly Twitter), SRK not only gave an honest review of the show but also revealed that Aryan doesn't tell him anything — and even asked Netflix for details. Shah Rukh Khan talks about son Aryan Khan's debut series. Shah Rukh Khan says Aryan Khan doesn't tell him anything When a fan asked about an update on Aryan's series, SRK said, 'So many people asking so have to tell Netflix… Beta show bana raha hai, Baap sirf wait kar raha hai…(Son is making show and father is just waiting) @NetflixIndia Tum kya kar rahe ho (What are you doing)??!!' In response, Netflix announced, 'Bete ka teaser post karne se pehle baap se permission chahiye thi (Wanted father's permission before releasing the teaser of son's series). The first look will be out tomorrow.' Shah Rukh then replied to the OTT giant, further asking for the timing of the teaser's release, and wrote, 'Yes yes yes. Please tell me the time also as Aryan doesn't tell me anything. Aapke saath toh purana rishta hai… so please tell me and everyone else. Too excited. Here's to a great First Look. Thanks.' Netflix then replied, 'Main hoon na, Sir (I am there sir)🫡 11 AM, 17 August.' In his honest review, Shah Rukh revealed that he had seen a bit of Ba***ds of Bollywood and found it to be very endearing and funny. He further described the show as wacky, emotional, and entertaining, but urged audiences to decide for themselves after watching it. About Ba***ds of Bollywood The show is expected to be a dark comedy, offering an insider's account of the workings of the Hindi film industry. According to reports, it will feature several big names in cameo appearances, including Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, and Ranveer Singh. Bobby Deol and Mona Singh are also reportedly starring in the show. The official synopsis of the Netflix series reads: 'Behind the glamour of Bollywood lies a world just as dramatic as the films themselves, and that is where the Netflix series, The BA***DS of Bollywood begins. Through Aryan Khan's distinct lens, this series dives into the glitz, the chaos, the comedy, and the high stakes of an industry built on dreams. From the house of Red Chillies Entertainment, this collaboration with Netflix brings to life a story that is as bold and entertaining as the movies we have come to love.' About Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film Shah Rukh will next be seen in Siddharth Anand's film King. The movie also stars Suhana Khan in her theatrical debut, alongside Abhishek Bachchan, Abhay Verma, Saurabh Shukla, and Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles. If reports are to be believed, the film will also feature Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff. King is currently under production and is expected to release in 2026.
