Ohtani takes the mound in series finale against Cardinals

Ohtani takes the mound in series finale against Cardinals originally appeared on The Sporting News The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to end their six-game California road trip on a high note this afternoon with a series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just one problem—they'll have to get past two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who takes the mound for his eighth start this season, per CBS Sports. However, Ohtani's last appearance on July 30 didn't go according to plan as he slowly transitions back into a full-time starter after undergoing Tommy John revision surgery in 2023. Slated to pitch four innings at Cincinnati, Ohtani left after 3.0 IP and 51 pitches, allowing 2 ER on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. He was later diagnosed with a cramp in his hip. The Cardinals have seen Ohtani once before, scoring 4 ER on him in 5.0 innings in 2023 when he was still with the Los Angeles Angels. But Ohtani still has a 2.99 ERA over six MLB seasons, and in seven starts this year, he's recorded a 2.40 ERA (4 ER in 15.0 IP). St. Louis split the first 2 games of this series, including a 3-2 win on Monday and a 12-6 loss last night. Scheduled to oppose Ohtani is left-hander Matthew Liberatore, who is 3-3 with a 3.53 ERA (14 ER in 35.2 IP) over his last 7 starts. At 1 game below .500, the Cardinals (57-58) are fighting for an NL Wild Card spot and sit 6.5 games behind the New York Mets and San Diego Padres in the playoff race. A win over Ohtani and the Dodgers today would mark their first series victory since July 8-10 vs. the Washington Nationals (2-1).

Different 'vibe' with New York Giants in 2025: 'There's a 100 percent buy-in'

There is a different vibe around the New York Giants this season, and more than just fans and analysts are noticing it. After an ugly 3-14 campaign a season ago, the current crop of Giants has returned more motivated, more united, and more determined to turn things around. The attitude is serious, and that has shown itself during two-plus weeks of very intense and physical training camp practices. One new veteran even praised the Giants' locker room as the best he's been a part of. Jevon Holland impressed "Coming in, I just wanted to get comfortable, you know. I wanted to find that rhythm with the team, get to know the guys (and) wanted to be a part of the group," Holland said on Giants Life. "It's been a pleasant surprise, man. I've been a part of some really close locker rooms. "This is the most 'home boy, my dawg' -- like, dapping each other up, playing pool, laughing. From top to bottom, that is a recipe for success. You have to trust the individual next to you in order to be successful." Evident on special teams Special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial has picked up on the changes, too. He noticed it the second players returned from their break following organized team activities (OTAs). "Just collectively, I think there was really good recall from OTAs in the offseason, which as a coordinator, the biggest question mark that you always have is how much recall they have after having a little break between that time of the year to training camp," he told reporters on Wednesday. "And when they came in, guys were ready to go. You could tell that guys put in a little bit more effort into studying the things that are required for them to have success, which allowed us to kind of speed up our install progression going forward. So really excited about where our guys are at, excited to see them perform." Ghobrial sees a 100 percent buy-in this summer, and not just from rookies who are trying to make an impression or crack the 53-man roster. "The one thing I'll say about this team and where this team is at right now, there is 100 percent buy-in, not only from the rookies, not only from the veteran special teamers that have played in this league, but also the guys that have been primary offense and defensive starters," he said. "Whatever unit we've asked our guys to do, they have completely bought in and they've competed, which has elevated everybody's level. And that's really exciting to see. That's a credit to (head coach Brian Daboll) Dabes and (general manager) Joe (Schoen) in terms of the roster that they built and the veteran leadership that's there and just guys that love football." Competitive camp In addition to Ghobrial, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has seen a notable increase in competitiveness. "I think it's been a really competitive camp. I like the mindset our guys have approached each day (with). No different than today, we got to have a great day today and capitalize on the opportunity. You get such limited opportunities throughout OTAs and training camp, so you just have to make the most of them," he said. "Each play is a learning experience and understanding that, 'Okay, if I made a good play, great.' You can take that to the bank and build off of it. Or, 'If I made a mistake, how can I learn from that to not make it happen again?' So I think that's just whether it's a veteran guy, whether it's a young player, getting them to understand that these opportunities are valuable, but if you do have a mistake or you have a correction, you can learn from it and grow from it." The leader sees it In his first summer as a Giant, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson's work ethic has rubbed off on his teammates. He demands more from them both on and off the field, and he feels they've delivered. "It's going great. I think guys are working their butts off, man. We're battling every day," he said. Wilson embraces his leadership role and is nothing short of thrilled that 89 other players are following in his footsteps. "I just want to be able to bring that championship mentality every day, a championship approach, the competitive edge every day, how we want to go about practice, how we want to push each other, how we want to challenge it. I think ultimately, to be able to have a tough mentality, I think that it's never easy," he said. "It is one of those things that for where we want to go and what we want to accomplish, we got to be able to stay in the moments and stay looking forward to the next play. "I think we do a really good job of that right now. We're battling every day, and it's just been cool. I love this locker room, the guys, just the fellowship that we have together all the way from the lunch room to the film room after practice. We go watch film every day together and spend a lot of time just as players and that's fun, to be able to spend that quality time to be able to go through the film, run the film and just talk about what guys see, what I see and share that and share that knowledge. It's been great, man." For Wilson, that makes him "grateful" to be a Giant.

Yankee Legends Floated to Replace Aaron Boone; Here's Who Would Really Get Job

After a fifth straight Yankees loss on Tuesday, another one in gut-wrenching fashion as closer Devin Williams allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth, if manager Aaron Boone was not on the hot seat before, he is now. At least as far as fans are concerned. Before this season, the Yankees extended Boone's contract through the 2027 season, so he admittedly seems unlikely to be abruptly fired mid-season. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 20: Manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees looks on prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 20, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 20: Manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees looks on prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 20, 2025 in Atlanta, the other hand, the team's deep regression after a fast start has not been a one-time occurrence. The same sort of collapse under Boone has happened in each of the previous three seasons as well. As compiled by Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report, here's how the Yankees' recent seasons have gone: 2022: 61-23, then 38-40 2023: 48-38, then 34-42 2024: 49-21, then 45-47 2025: 42-25, now 18-29 In response, Yankee fans have floated the names of two franchise legends to replace Boone, but in all likelihood based on how recent manager firings have gone, neither of their favorites would be in line to get the job. According to an analysis by Pinstripes Nation columnist Esteban Quiñones published Wednesday, one of the two most popular prospective Boone replacements would be former catcher Jorge Posada — the backstop and in many ways, backbone of the Yankees dynasty under manager Joe Torre that won three straight World Series from 1998 to 2000. More MLB: Yankees Could Crash Out of Playoff Race If They Don't Get Act Together: Insider Posada also won a fourth World Series with the Yankees in 2009, when Joe Girardi was managing the iconic club. But the Yankees have not won a World Series since then, and have appeared in only one, last season. However, the 17-year veteran, who spent his whole career in the Bronx, has never managed a big league team. The second hoped-for candidate, according to Quiñones, has 12 years of managing in the majors, five with the Los Angeles Dodgers, followed by seven overseeing the Miami Marlins. In fact, 64-year-old Don Mattingly won National League Manager of the Year with the Marlins, in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Mattingly guided the Dodgers to three straight playoff appearances from 2013 to 2015 after a three-year absence from the postseason. With the Marlins, the only postseason appearance under Mattingly came in the 2020 season. As a player, Mattingly's .830 lifetime OPS with 222 home runs in 14 seasons — all with New York — and .307 career batting average make him certainly the most accomplished Yankee player who spent his whole career in the Bronx but never won a World Series — or even to play in one. More MLB: Aaron Boone 'Losing Grip' as Yankees Melt Down in Toronto; 'Close to Dead Day' Mattingly never even played in the postseason until the final year of his career, 1995, when the Yankees lost the American League Division Series to the Seattle Mariners. He currently serves as bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays. In reality, in the hypothetical event of Boone's midseason dismissal, neither of those Yankee greats are likely to be hired. Instead, based on multiple precedents, the most likely candidate would be Boone's own bench coach, former Detroit Tiger Brad Ausmus. Bench coaches tend to be the most common replacements for fired managers. Blue Jays manager Jon Schneider was elevated from bench coach in 2022 when Charlie Montoyo got the axe. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson was bench coach when he replaced fired manager Girardi in 2022 as well. This year, when the Pittsburgh Pirates canned manager Derek Shelton, they promoted bench coach Don Kelly to take his seat. And those are just a few examples of the trend. Ausmus had an 18-year playing career with four different teams, winning four Gold Gloves and being named an All-Star in 1999. He also has managerial experience, helming the Detroit Tigers from 2014 to 2017, including a 90-win season and playoff appearance in his rookie year. Ausmus, 56, also managed the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. More MLB: Aaron Boone's 'Laissez-Faire Attitude' Ripped After Yankees' Humiliating Sweep
