
It profits to be kind: Why there is no glory in building a billion-dollar business while emotionally bankrupting people
Corporate folklore has long idolised the 'tough boss', a hybrid of Michael Corleone and Steve Jobs, who storms into meetings, demands miracles within a day and fires people on the spot. Yes, they may deliver results, but they often leave behind trails of burnout, anxiety-ridden juniors and a spate of resignation letters. The truth is, there's no glory in building a billion-dollar business while emotionally bankrupting your people. Leadership built on fear eventually collapses under its own insecurity. Kindness does not mean being weak. Empathy is not a sign of indecision. Research now shows that empathetic leaders create healthier, more productive and cohesive organisations. Think of empathy as the Wi-Fi of your organisation. Invisible, often taken for granted, but when it goes missing, nothing works.In a 2024 McKinsey Talks Talent podcast, 'It's cool to be kind: The value of empathy at work,' Stanford psychologist and author of The War for Kindness Jamil Zaki, talks about empathy having three distinct forms:
Cognitive empathy: Ability to understand what someone is feeling.
Emotional empathy: Actually feeling what another person feels. It's what makes you wince when someone else is hurting or smile when they succeed.
Compassionate empathy: Perhaps most crucial for leadership, ability not just to feel, but to act. It's empathy with legs. Great leaders blend all three. But where's the RoI?
Retention: Empathetic cultures see far lower attrition. Losing good people is expensive. Keeping them through understanding and sympathy is far more precious.
Innovation: People only take creative risks when they feel psychologically safe. You can't tell someone to 'think outside the box' while boxing them in with fear.
Reputation: In today's social media age, leaks of a toxic culture spread fast, with reputations being the first casualty. Genuine empathy builds solid loyalty. Empathy at work is about letting someone leave early to care for a sick parent. It's about not scheduling 10 pm calls just because your inspiration strikes at night. It's giving feedback with dignity. Celebrating effort, not just outcomes. Listening without interrupting.
An empathetic attitude is especially vital when it comes to supporting women in the workplace. Whether it's navigating maternity, caregiving responsibilities, uncomfortable situations, or simply having a say in meeting rooms, women face unique challenges. When women feel heard, supported and safe, entire organisations rise. Kindness isn't a policy you paste on a wall. It's a value you live by daily. It shows up when you celebrate someone's small win, or when you cancel a meeting because your colleague has a problematic situation, or when you write a handwritten note to thank a retiring team member, or when you ask after their health. And as Zaki says, empathy isn't a talent, it's a skill that can be built up just like any other.There's also a compelling generational shift underway. Gen Z and millennials are more concerned about purpose of the organisation. They want to work for companies that value their emotional wellbeing. They want managers who ask questions, try to understand and resolve matters, not just give instructions.A May 2025 Deloitte study found that 69% of employees would work harder if they felt more appreciated. In 2018, Gallup reported that teams in the US with engaged leaders showed 21% greater profitability.The pandemic was also a brutal teacher. But it taught us that in times of crisis, people don't only remember how quickly you responded, but they also remember how human you were.Then there's humour, an underrated management tool. When used with grace, it can break tension, open up honesty and deliver tough messages in a soft wrapper. Laced with empathy, humour is like adrak ki chai, a little sharp, yet warm and easy to digest.Empathy outlives designations and market cycles, and outshines strategy decks. You don't get quoted for how many hours you worked. You get remembered for the one moment you paused and truly connected with another.But individual acts are not enough. We need empathy by design. It must reflect in our policies and behaviour-from parental leave to mental health access, from how we onboard juniors to how we offboard seniors. Every company's balance sheet should include a new item line: empathy reserves.So, let's continue to innovate, automate, scale and grow. But let us also remember that no machine, metric or model will ever replace the quiet power of a kind word spoken at the right time. To every leader out there: be kind. Not just when it's easy. Stanford Plans To Axe 363 Jobs Amid Trump's Funding Cuts
Stanford University plans to axe hundreds of staff due to funding cuts for higher education under President Donald Trump, the latest mass layoff at an elite US college. The plan announced in late July, which AFP confirmed Wednesday by consulting official documents, follows similar firings at Harvard, Columbia and Johns Hopkins -- all of which have been targeted in the White House's crackdown on top universities. Trump has wielded federal funds as a negotiating tool for universities that he says are too liberal, insisting that they submit to curriculum, enrollment and other changes. The Republican administration has also decreased or placed holds on spending for university research as part of wider budget cuts since taking office in January. Stanford, located just south of San Francisco with some 18,000 staff, said it was making a $140 million reduction in the general funds budget for the upcoming year. "This is the product of a challenging fiscal environment shaped in large part by federal policy changes affecting higher education," Stanford president Jon Levin and provost Jenny Martinez said in a joint statement. They added that the job cuts were "difficult actions that affect valued colleagues and friends who have made important contributions to Stanford." A filing by Stanford with the California state government said 363 employees would be impacted by the layoffs.

Do consultants make good CEOs?
There are few more frequent visitors to the executive suites of America's biggest companies than the strategy whisperers at McKinsey, BCG and Bain. It helps that the corner office is often occupied by one of their alumni. Among the chief executives of America's 500 most valuable companies, 36 spent time at one of the three prestigious consultancies, according to Altrata, a data provider, up from 25 in 2018. Household names from Alphabet and Coca-Cola to Citigroup and Visa are run by former consultants. But are they any good at the top job? To answer that question, The Economist used a list compiled by Altrata of alumni of the strategy trio who have run a company in the S&P 500. We then constructed an index of these companies weighted by market value, and a benchmark that re-weights the S&P 500 to ensure the same mix of industries as those run by the ex-consultants. Chart We found that since January 2010 the companies run by former consultants have generated a cumulative return for shareholders of 677%, including dividends, compared with 584% from our benchmark index (see chart). There have certainly been some notable flops over that period. John Donahoe (a former Bainie) and Laxman Narasimhan (a one-time McKinseyite) were disastrous at Nike and Starbucks, respectively. On the whole, however, consulting looks to have been a helpful training ground for the top job, particularly amid the turmoil of the past five years. Consulting firms have long claimed to be 'CEO factories'. Clever graduates are rotated through projects lasting a few weeks to a few months, exposing them to a wide range of business problems, from entering new markets to cutting costs and improving customer service. Most leave after a couple of years of punishing work, with the consultancies often helping them line up their next role. McKinsey, the biggest of the trio, performed particularly well in our analysis. Not only has it nurtured the largest number of S&P 500 bosses, accounting for 24 of the current lot. Its alumni have also performed best in the top job, both in absolute terms and relative to their industry mix. That may be a welcome source of comfort for the firm, which has bled market share to its biggest rival, BCG, and has shed some 5,000 employees since the start of 2023 after a pandemic-era hiring binge. Indeed, its clients may be happy to take a few more consultants off its hands.

Stanford University held an endowment valued at $37.6 billion, as of August last year, the fourth largest among US universities. The proposed endowment tax is expected to cost Stanford University approximately $750 million annually. The current endowment tax rate at the university is 1.4 percent, as per the Stanford Daily newspaper. "That is significant and of course it creates a huge financial burden for Stanford," said Julian Vogel, a professor of finance at San Jose State University. The Trump administration froze over $330 million in funding for the University of California, Los Angeles, last week, citing the university's alleged failure to address a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students amid ongoing student protests following the outbreak of the Israel-Palestine conflict, reports Reuters. The US government recently concluded its investigations into Columbia University and Brown University, with Columbia agreeing to pay over $220 million and Brown committing to a $50 million settlement. Both universities have also accepted certain conditions set by the government. Negotiations with Harvard University are still underway, reports Reuters.
