CPI(M) hits out at SNDP leader for remarks against minorities

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (PTI) The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala urged people to remain vigilant against any attempts—by anyone—to 'undermine" the state's secular fabric.
Without naming Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan, who had launched a scathing attack on minority communities for allegedly 'grabbing the opportunities meant for backward classes", a CPI(M) state secretariat statement said the Left Front government was committed to addressing the grievances of all sections of society.
'Social justice and secularism are the foundation of the government's policy," the statement added.
Natesan's speeches—at Kottayam on Saturday and Kochi on Sunday—have drawn widespread criticism from various political parties.
Speaking at a felicitation event in Kochi to mark his 30 years as SNDP general secretary, Natesan said he would continue to speak about social justice and 'the neglect of the backward Ezhava community", despite opposition from minority leaders.
State Cooperation Minister V N Vasavan, who inaugurated the event, praised Natesan for his 'historic achievements" during his tenure.
'Only in a secular society can people of all faiths—and those with none—function democratically," it added.
The LDF government's welfare programmes aim to address the challenges faced by the poorer sections across all communities, it further said.
The Communist Party has drawn inspiration from Kerala's renaissance movements and has worked to ensure social justice, the statement added.
The SNDP, founded by Sree Narayana Guru, upheld the principle that the essence of all religions is the same.
'The organisation should move forward in a manner that protects secularism. Anyone can raise the issues of a particular community, but not in a way that incites religious animosity," the statement stressed.
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan also strongly criticised Natesan's remarks, stating that any attempt to divide society must be opposed.
Speaking in Kochi, Satheesan said Natesan's comments 'went against the very ideals upheld" by SNDP founder Sree Narayana Guru.
'Community leaders should avoid statements that create divisions among people," he claimed.
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty also condemned Natesan's 'unwarranted" remarks against minorities.
He urged the state government to examine Natesan's statements and take appropriate action. PTI MVG MVG SSK

A section of Congress leaders and members of some Muslim youth organisations appeared to rally in support of Leader of the Opposition V.D. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says India no longer has to be golden bird, time to become a lion
India has to become strong and also wealthy from an economic point of view as the world understands power, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday. Bhagwat also said that India no longer has to be the 'golden bird' and it was time for it to become a 'lion'. 'It is necessary because the world understands power. So Bharat should become strong. It also has to become wealthy from an economic perspectives,' he added, while speaking at the national education conference, 'Gyan Sabha', organised by the RSS-linked Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas in Kochi. The RSS chief went on to say that 'Bharat' should not be translated as otherwise it would lose its identity and along with it the respect it enjoys in the world. According to a PTI report, Mohan Bhagwat also said that Bharat, a proper noun, should not be translated as its identity is respected 'because it is Bharat'. "Bharat is a proper noun. Just a day ago, Bhagwat had said that the education system in the country was developed under the long-term influence of colonial ideas and for a developed nation, an alternative based on Indian philosophy needs to be formulated. For that, the focus should be 'deep, realistic, and completely Indian-based,' Bhagwat said. According to the statement issued by the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Bhagwat said during the conference that the workers should become competent in the field they work, be role models in it and develop friendly relations in order to lead others forward. Before the meeting began, RSS chief Bhagwat visited the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya and lit a traditional lamp (Nilavilakku) to mark the start of the conference, held at the Chitvilasam auditorium. Around 100 delegates from across India, including national coordinators of the Nyas and experts in education, are taking part in the discussions. The focus of the two-day meeting is on building a roadmap for educational reforms to support the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat).

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin discharged from Chennai hospital after therapeutic procedure
Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin was discharged from a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday evening after undergoing a successful therapeutic procedure to treat variations in heart rate, the hospital said. After experiencing mild dizziness, the CM Stalin underwent medical examination and a procedure performed by a team of expert doctors.(PTI) On July 21, Stalin experienced dizziness during his morning walk and underwent medical examination, followed by a procedure performed by a team of expert doctors. According to the Apollo Hospital, where the CM was admitted, Stalin has been declared fit for discharge and has been advised to resume his regular activities after three days of rest. He also underwent an angiogram earlier, after which no blockage was found in the blood vessels, senior DMK leader and Minister Duraimurugan told PTI. Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, CM Stalin had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting urgent demands related to education, infrastructure, railways, and the welfare of people in Tamil Nadu. In his petition, CM Stalin demanded that funds under the Samagra Shiksha scheme be released and urged the Centre to implement railway projects that were sanctioned over a decade ago but still remain inactive. The petition emphasised the need for the centre's cooperation in implementing crucial projects and addressing long-pending issues. The petition sent to the centre, also raised strong concerns over the continued arrest and detention of Indian fishermen and the seizure of their boats by the Sri Lankan Navy. The Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister to intervene and find a permanent diplomatic solution personally.
